Default Do You Have A Heirloom Gun Given To You By Your Dad

I shot this Ruger Single Six with my Dad about 6 months before he died from complications after open heart surgery at 77 and I remember that day very well.He said he wanted me to have this pistol after he was gone.It was first owned by my uncle who was aboard a destroyer off Iwo Jima. The gun was purchased in 1970 by that uncle and his kids gave it to my Dad.It's maybe not worth a whole lot but to me it is.Do you have a gun to pass down that's been in your family for a while. My son has asked about owning it someday.

Sorry to hear about your Dad. Very cool story you have. I have quite a few guns that have been passed down to me already. While they aren't very valuable to the outside world, they are absolutely priceless to me and something I'll always remember my Dad by. His S&W 27-2 3.5" he bought brand new when he was 18 will be mine one day. Also a Remington 870 he grew up duck hunting with, it's all beat up, but what a story it has behind it.

No. My pop never owned a gun, to my knowledge, or a motorcycle. He did give me a taste for good food, and a sense of humor.

A very nice story to go with your single six. I have a couple that were mine that my father gave to me when he realized that he would not be going out in the woods anymore. One of them is a Winchester Model 55 that he picked up before I was born. When I was little, I always remember in November having Dad go to the linen closet and take out the rifle in it's case. The model 55 was a take-down lever action 30-30. He would allow me to handle it once it was assembled. Oh the things that dreams are made of. When I finally became old enough to join him in the hunt, my Uncle gave me my own Winchester 30-30. Those are two guns that I'll have to the end and pass on to my Grandsons.

I have a Remington Model 14 that was my grandfather's. After my dad died I happened to find a picture of him holding it when he was in his 20s - on a camping trip with his friends.

Fortunately my 22 yr old son just adores that gun. I've been able to buy brass and dies for it (chambered in .32 Remington). So we've been able to have some fun shooting it.

Kinda.
My grandfather left me an Ithaca 1911 (1943), and a Winchester 1894 in 30-30.
BUT, his room mate from a time he worked in Texas ALSO left me some guns, notably a S&W model 19-4 (which I have shown off on here a few times) and a rusty WWII bring-back Mauser 1914 in 7.65mm. Not a great pistol, but after a little elbow grease it at least shoots straight and is moderately reliable.
My dad wasn't much for guns. Loved machines, but not ones that went "bang".

I have several, including the family heirloom Winchester .30-30, the family heirloom Remington 121 pump .22 (both from my great grandfather), an AR-15 (Dad was a retired Air Force EOD Sgt.), his Colt 1911 (since forwarded to my son) and a S&W 659 I gave him years ago after having bought it in the early '80's. The 659 was stolen in a burglary and recovered in a neighboring jurisdiction with the magazine and firing pin safety disconnects missing. It was wrecked when we got it back. I repaired it, but the frame was bent and it was ultimately scrapped out.

I have three I would never sell. First is a Ruger Deerstalker .44 mag carbine that was an early production model given to my father by Bill Ruger for a fireplace project he did for Ruger. It was my fathers go to deer rifle until he passed away.

The second is a Remington Sportsman 58 (their first gas operated semi auto shotgun) that was my dads favorite duck gun. He spent many years hunting the Stratford, CT marshes with that gun.

Last is a Browning Auto-5. After the Korean War, my father tried to get my uncle Jack interested in duck hunting. My uncle bought the gun used from a farmer, went duck hunting a couple times, didn't like the bad weather (he was a golf kind of guy) and just put the gun away, oiled, and wrapped in an old blanket. One day when I was 14, he came to visit. Handed me that "blanket", and said "here take this and hang onto it for me, I don't use it anymore". Man was I shocked when I unwrapped it and seen what was inside... Having no recoil pad, I think I went thru my early teens with a permanently bruised shoulder...

Larry

How about an 1897 Winchester 12ga that went from my grandfather to my father to me and now to my son. Maybe a 25acp auto that followed the same route. And a 20 ga double that my father received on his 12th birthday and went to me on my 12trhbirthday and is my son's hands now. No, I don't guess we have any heirloom guns... but maybe a couple that went to my daughter could be considered.

Sorry about the loss of your dad. I have dad's model 12 Winchester. He bought it used in 1946 after his discharge from the Army.

I'm sorry about your Dad. You have the good memories. May they never dim. You have his pistol. Every time you touch it, you'll remember your times with him. Bittersweet, but you have something tangible.

I have a Model 70 that belonged to Dad. I gave it to him one Christmas when we figured he needed a varmint rifle. A lot of critters fell to that rifle. At the end of a hunt, I'd take it home to clean and get it back to him sometime later. One time we had been at the range and it went home with me for cleaning. I said I'd get it back to him soon. Dad replied "you better keep it." That was our last time shooting together. My gift to him became a gift to me. Dad's been gone now for a year and a half. I'll cherish his rifle for all my days. And I have to tell you. I can't bring myself to go shoot it. Not yet.

When my Dad passed he lived above the Ohio river near Steubenville,Oh.We shot that pistol just out his back door over the hill, that was pretty cool.To get that pistol back to Nevada I had to drive down the river 50 miles to Wheeling WV.and get a hardened case with 2 locks on it from Cabellas so I could fly out of Pittsburgh Pa.with it on my flight out.I called the airlines and you have to declare a firearm at the luggage counter and it travels with your luggage in the underbelly not on carry-on.When I got to the luggage counter I said I'm declaring a firearm and the lady behind me just gives me a stair.I guess people go hunting in different parts of the country and they acted like it's no big deal.

I gave Dad a Model 65 3in back in the late '90s and got it back when he passed not quite 4 years ago. I also have a 1909 Remington Autoloading Shotgun that belonged to my maternal grandfather. These were the predecessor to the Model 11.

I have a Colt .38 Police Positive that my dad bought NIB in 1944 when he turned 20 yrs old. But the gun dates to 1923. I just sent off for a letter to try to learn more. It was always in his nightstand while I was growing up. Now my son and I shoot it couple times a year. Also got 2 Remington autos (12 ga. & 16 ga.), both in great shape. He loved to pheasant hunt. Also an 1939 Mauser 8mm bolt action. It sure is great to have his old guns.

My dad didn't like or own any firearms at all. However was showing a Saur 38H to my fellow forman and he asked if we could do a swap. His 1943 Ithaca 45acp and a cigar box full of ammo. We swapped and I became the proud owner of a piece of American History. You see Dave was in tanks in some of the desert battles and as such a genuine WWII vet. He bounced around so much in tanks that his back eventually had to have a couple spinal fusions. He went out on disability and left Brooklyn NY for Salt Lake City. Dave passed away a few years ago and everytime I handle and fire that old 45 I think about him. He even authored a small book about his war time experiences and I have an autographed copy. Will probably be the last pistol that I would ever sell. Frank

Nope, my dad doesn't like me shooting his guns. My mom's biological father gave me a Cooey semi auto .22 and a Win 94 when I was 12. I still have the Cooey but I gave the 94 to someone a couple years ago. They needed it more than I did. No sentimental value to it, he probably stole it anyway or conned someone to get it. Still need to get rid of the Cooey, just haven't gotten to it yet. Might pound it into the ground and put a "Please don't let your dog piss on my yard" sign on the buttstock.

I envy those with a close relationship with their fathers as I never had one. My father is still kicking and he lives in state but we go to lunch a couple times as year is all, his choice. My FIL was the best man I ever knew and like all rural Coloradoans, he had 1 big game rifle, a pre 64 model 70 Winchester, 1 shotgun, a bolt action beast I don't think he ever shot, a 22 handgun, a Colt in his bed stand, and the he had HIS rifle. A Remington model 12, 22 rifle that his father bought in 1929 when he was a dry land farmer in Joes, CO during the depression. This 22 was with my FIL about everywhere he went in the woods. Killed several deer to feed his young family along with countless rabbits and pheasants. The old rifle had little bluing left and almost no stock finish. His only grandson got the rifle as is right, but man I would have loved to have that 22. I threatened his very life if he ever sold, re-finished, altered, or neglected this gun. I have a standing offer of $1,000 if he ever gets too broke and needs money, for the rifle. For those with heirlooms I ask of them to think about the lack of finish on their heirlooms, and use this lack of newness and stock dents and dings as their heirs history. Any polishing it up or refinishing ruins forever their heirs history. Admire the heavily used piece and when handling or hunting with it think of how your dad used it hard and made the gun look the way it does today.

When my father died somehow my brother got all three of his guns....and i got squat. We are not close. When my grandfather realized he wouldn't be hunting anymore he gave me his 1942 M94 winchester 32 special. I was heading out the door for my first deer hunt, 12 years old. The next day i killed a whitetail buck with it, first time i ever fired it. I'm 62 and i shoot that gun most every time i go to the range. They'll need to put this rifle in my box when its time for my dirt nap......Mike

My dad left me a Smith and Wesson 38/44 Outdoorsman. He bought the gun while he was going to flight school at a hardware store in Grand Island Nebraska in the early 40's.

My dad is not a gun guy. But back in the 1970's he bought two guns (in a state where gun possession required finger printing and interviews with the local police). They were for home protection.

One of them is now mine, and it is an original Browning A-5. It will stay in the family.

My grandfather (a WWI combat veteran who lost part of his left lung to Mustard Gas) hunted and owned guns, but like a lot of stuff he sold them in the Depression for food after "every animal that was not on a farm" in his area had been eaten. In the 1930's my uncle got a high school job and bought a Red Rider BB gun. My uncle gave it to my Dad when my uncle left for WWII. My uncle was in the Bulge and Germany and made it back. My Dad was the youngest so when Dad was called up for Korea, it was left at my Grandfather's house. My father stayed stateside due to the timely death of Joe Stalin. Both my Dad and my uncle were quickly married and started families and jobs. My Dad rediscovered the BB gun when my Grandfather passed in 1983. Unfortunately, though glad to get this BB gun, I inherited it last year from Dad. It still works. It is known as the "family gun".

My dad bought this K-22 in 1947. It shipped in Nov 47. He taught my brother and I how to shoot with it. It became mine when Dad passed in 1965. He used to carry it in his pickup glove box when he was on his rural mail carrier route. He would shoot pheasant, rabbit and crow with it. Fortunately we never had to eat the crow. The revolver even makes me a pretty good shot.

Dad left me his Remington Model 11 shotgun. I had it rebuilt, looks like new now.

Question SUPPOSEDLY

The "rumor" was Dad brought his 45 back from WWll. It was in Africa/ Italy/ India/ Burma/ China. He would never confirm nor deny he had it, & I wish I had the years spent searching for it back. Knowing how I was (still am) he likely sold it (smart thing to do). I do have his machete & bayonet.

My Dad carried this Combat Masterpiece in Vietnam while in the USAF. My favorite handgun.

Default I am in....

I have inherited a few of my late father's guns... there were 5 kids in my family so they got scattered around... and have inherited ones from previous generations too... I have my father's first pistol... a Red Eagle Ruger 22 with a 4 digit serial number he had him mother buy because he was a few months too young when they came out... I have a 19-4 he gave me on my birthday and I have his Browning Hi-Power he carried and shot in IPSC in the 70's... I bought my late uncle's Rem 1100 that he carried on every hunt of my youth at the estate auction... and was given my maternal grandfather's only gun by my aunt... a Savage O/U 410 he bought at the cattle sale barn when someone came up $5 short. - grandma was mad he wasted the money... they will all go to my son... and he knows what they are and why they are special... none of them are worth a fortune... but they are priceless to me...

Yes the last revolver my father carried as a patrolman. His model 19

Found in a shoebox wrapped in a towel in the bottom of a spare bedroom closet after his passing. With the rest of the items show below:

I put the original stocks away, gave it some dress up with Grashorns, added a tyler-T and sent it to Nelson Ford for an action job.

Carrying it and taking it out and shooting it makes me feel like he is with me at times. It shoots great at 25 yards.

I have my father's Marlin 39A, my grandfather's Colt M1877, and my grandmother's Frank Wesson single shot 30 RF which happens to be serial number 1. The latter appeared in American Handgunner a couple of years back.

1. Ward's Westernfield copy of Mossberg 500 w/30" fullchoke barrel (I swapped it for an 18" for home defense). He used it for a few Dove hunts.

2. JC Higgins single shot .22 rifle. It's so cheap that the firing pin/ejector is a piece of sheet metal. He used this as a kid to hunt rabbits.

He still has a Remington Nylon .22 rifle under his bed I hope to inherit one day.

My dad was very frugal and doesn't like to spend $$, so he never bought any big $$ guns.

Dad wasn't a gun guy but did leave me a couple of firearms not necessarily heirlooms.

Winchester Model 94 - NRA Centennial Rifle, unfired and in original box. Made in 1971.

Beretta BS950 .25 automatic with original box/papers

He has been gone 6 years now. Navy vet (at age 18) of WWII and Army Combat Vet from Korea (780th FA BN). Picture of dad in 1945 after Navy Basic. Picture of Dad's 8" howitzer gun crew in Korea 1951.

I inherited a Harrington and Richardson "Expert" .22lr target pistol that Dad bought around 1938. He lived in the middle of Chicago at the time, so I don't think he had many chances to shoot it. He married Mom in 1939, and I don't think he shot it again after that. It went unfired for about 75 years, but it works perfectly. Trigger action is about 15 lb. DA and 3 lb. SA. It has a horrible rear sight, maybe 1/16" high, with a 1/32" wide notch, so it's for bright light use only. I suppose I could put an aftermarket sight on it (it would be really accurate with a red dot), but I don't want to drill into it and destroy its originality. I've attached a couple of photos including one of my targets from my rules-violating single action attempt at Rastoff's Challenge.

only a couple items i'd consider 'heirloom' though more based on emotion over some collectible value.

Years back after my step dad passed, i got his old Bear compound bow. Took up bowhunting that year and got my first deer that fall. Bow made a couple trips to the stand then became a bowfishing rig until now it just hangs in my shop as a momento.

And 5 years ago (i was 50 at the time) my inlaws gave me their dad's old Colt Challenger ('51 model) which initially was their grandpa's. That old Colt started me in this hobby i so enjoy, and even now when i take it out to play (only occasionally) it still is fun to shoot.

I am the keeper of the Family guns, I have stuff from about every
war except Spanish American. When one of old timers in the klan
passed I always got the guns because they knew I wouldn't sell
them. My oldman bought me a Marlin 1897 for my 5th birthday,
for my 6th he gave me a Stevens 94 12g shotgun. We bought a
lot of guns in my family, most had no sentimental value, they
came and went. When I came home from Army, I bought the old
man a Brn 20 O&U at which time he gave me his old Brn A5
which is the gun he always carried for rabbits when I was a kid.

I have inherited three guns.

The first is my Dad's Remington 11-48 12 ga. made in 1952. He had bought it used from his Uncle the year I was born. Dad was a big quail hunter and that gun brings back fond memories of days afield, fine bird dogs and time spent with him. Some day this one will belong to my oldest son.

The second belonged to my friend Bill. He was a retired LEO and a true lover of the .44 Magnum. He started with an earlier 6" Model 29 and when allowed often carried it on duty. During the 1980s, Bill got heavily into PPC shooting. He always shot this Model 29 and always with full power magnum loads. Ain't no telling how many thousands of rounds he put through that thing. In 1992 he sent the gun back to S&W for its third overhaul. They told him that the frame had stretched and sent him a brand new 29-8 to replace it. A few years later, Bill was forced into retirement due to health issues. Believe it or not, that 6" Model 29-8 was his EDC. You never saw him without it.
Bill passed in 2002 and left me his beloved 29-8. I feel honored to have it.

I've mentioned before that my best friend, Bob, passed away a few months ago. When his wife and I started to go through the safes, she said "Bob wanted you to have this one." She then handed me his 1975 6" Colt Python.
Thus far, I just haven't been able to bring myself to shoot it.

I'll never sell any of these.

I've got a 60's vintage 11-48 in .410 as well as an old Ruger 22 pistol that dates to 1952 by serial number. That Ruger shoots as good now as it did bak then and quite frankly I shoot it better than my stainless Mk III

He died shortly after my birth. The only things I inherited were his love for guns (the only one in the family), bad people skills, quick temper, and his WWl dog tag that only has a thumb print, name, blood type & 7 digit SS#??? He served in WW1, WWll, Korea. The dog tag has been on my key ring since I started carrying keys, I suppose I should find a better place for it.

I have this Ruger Standard that my father bought brand new in 1950 for $37.50. What I wish I had was the Luger that was brought back from Germany after WW II. He sold it without asking me if I wanted it. Grrrrr

The first pistol I ever shoot (in 1968), a model 36 with a 3 inch barrel and his Remington 1100 came to me about 5 years ago when Dad passed. Full of memories (but not worth the price you know)

I've got several guns that I'm just safe keeping for dad, his Remington 1100 12 gauge, same gun in 20 gauge and his J.C. Higgins Model 20. The Higgins was the first new gun dad ever purchased. He paid $55.00 for it in 1954.

Another gun that is near and dear to me is my Winchester Model 42. My friend Bob bought it new in 1948 after returning from the ETO. He had fired it four times. He still had the original box of shells and the box the gun came in. He tried to give it to me as a thank you for helping him liquidate his business assets when he retired. We argued over me paying him a fair value for a NNIB Winchester M42 and him not wanting to be paid. A few years down the road my friend died. He left me a disbursement in his will equal to the amount I had paid him for the M42. I guess Bob did have the last word on the subject.

I have a 1954 Highway Patrolman and a mid-30's Stevens Buckhorn .22 rifle given to me by my dad, who's still alive at age 96. Believe it or not, the .22 rifle kind of means more to me than the S&W revolver because my dad bought it new in about 1935 when was around 15 years old. Ever wonder what your dad was like when he was 15 years old? That's what I think about when I look at that gun.

The Highway Patrolman, despite it's age, was only owned by my dad for 5 or 6 years before he gave it to me. Still, I consider it an heirloom gun that makes me think of him.

My father left my mother before my sister and I were born, he is still alive but I have only seen him a handful of times in my life. Not sure if he even likes guns.
My husband however has one of his father's guns that was given to him by my husband's grandfather, a Ruger mini 14. He also has his other grandfather's Weatherby 300 and his mother's S&W model 4006. Priceless guns that will go to our children someday.
