Default Funny World: Get new BCG or new Rifle?

My Post ban Black Rifle is just the way I like it.
An older DPMS XM-15 E2S receiver
Knurled forend
16.5" barrel
JP trigger
Ace fixed stock
Hogue grip
YHM BUIS
Bushnell TRS-25 Red Dot (3" MOT Dot)

Got it used and it has had 1000's of rounds down the tube, so I thought it time to get a spare Bolt Carrier Group and charging handle.

Guess what, a new BCG and charging handle costs almost as much as a new Black Rifle

how much do you like that rifle? if you like it, then fix her up, if you're willing to part ways with her, then get a new one and either sell, trade, or use it for parts.

A quality bcg can be had for $90-120. Scrap the charging handle unless you want an extended latch version. I'd recommend getting a new complete upper if you like the lower components.

If you've had this rifle for years and it runs fine then why even mess with it? It's "just the way you like it." You didn't mention you are starting to have malfunctions so don't fix what ain't broken unless you've got money burning a hole in your pocket. If that's the case, sell it and get a whole new rifle.

"Thousands of rounds down the tube."
I would check headspace before using a new bolt.

As Jagular noted there is a rather wide selection of BCG's and prices. Personally I prefer Nickel Boron plated BCG's because they are SSOOO easy to clean up. As for brands, I've been quite satisfied with Fail Zero BCG's and when they are on sale an Primary Arms they are a real bargain.

I would also suggest that you consider adding some uppers to your "collection". Because you currently have a lower with a great trigger and set up just the way you want it. So why not add some additional calibers such as the 300 Blackout. It's one of the big pluses for the AR platform, changing to a different caliber is simply a matter of swapping uppers.

No offense, but I am not big on the term "Modern Sporting Rifle" as IMHO I think it sounds made up and a bit silly.

My favorite term is "EBR," standing for "Evil Black Rifle". But that is a bit nasty, and not everyone gets what "EBR" means, so I usually use "Black Rifle."

"EBR" is a military term for "Enhanced Battle Rifle" which mainly refers to the M14 modernization effort.

I thought that a "Modern Sporting Rifle" was any firearm that used self contained metallic cartridges! I consider my Sharps 1874 in 45-70 a modern sporting rifle (at least compared to my best friends 50 cal. Flintlock!)

As to the dilemma of you Black Rifle, spare parts are a must, I acquire them all the time, usually already assembled in a working gun configuration! There is no reason not to have a spare bolt carrier group. I never ask my armorer friend, but I don't think most agencies rebuild fully functional weapons! But they seem to buy lots of spares!

Ivan
