Default HOLD ON TO YOUR HI POWERS

Over on the 1911/Hi Power forum, the chatter is the demise of the FN/Browning Hi Power. According to knowledgeable members there, FN will discontinue manufacture and Browning importing of the iconic classic by the end of this year. A member from Portugal posted that the assembly plant there is closing .The world famous pistol cannot be manufactured and sold at costs anywhere near todays plastic guns, and military and law enforcement contracts world wide have virtually come to a halt. So some on that forum say hang onto your Hi Powers, especially those prior to the MKII. Prices should increase substantially in the future ( re; Colt Python, war time 1911s, etc.).??

Already been discussed twice in the last week. Here is the most recent thread still on page one. Browning HiPower

The discontinued models on the Browning website are nothing new. They all have been discontinued well before 2017. Nothing new has been discontinued in 2017.

Nothing has been determined yet. Ayoob loves to hear himself speak these days. He has no written proof that Browning is dropping the BHP. Every few years this topic makes the rounds. It has not happened yet but that does not mean it will not in the future. As far as FN ceasing production that it another topic which to my knowledge has not been addresses.

In the end there are so many BHPs in the market right now that I do not see it really effecting the market long term. There might be a bump in sales of NIB but I think the used market, which is the best place to buy IMHO, will stay relatively the same. There are
So many BHPs all over the world you cannot compare it to the 1911 or a Python which were made in much smaller numbers.

Got my 2 Mark IIIS..... and I'm keeping them...............................

Maybe the prices will go down...... now that FN/Browning is no longer "supporting" them.

I read it about 3rd Gen. Smiths on the internet ...... so it must be true

I don't see anything happening price wise for the vast majority of HiPowers. Maybe some older one/collectable will go up in price but typically modern off the shelf.....I doubt it

Unless they become the carry gun of character in a movie, or series.

Look what walking dead did to the Python. Some people may remember how hard it was to get a 29 after the release of Dirty Harry.

It's funny when I hear this stuff. It reminds me of market timing. It doesn't work.

Default Browning HP fan.

I think the single action pistol in any form is obsolete for police and military use. Most of their ranks are not gun-buffs or 1911 freaks. The point-and-shoot pistol simplifies training, especially for those who can never be sure which end of the gun the bullets exit from.

The value of rare, collectible classes of Hi-Powers probably would not be affected. As for the common variety: if you told me 35-40 years ago that the ubiquitous Colt Detective Special would someday sell used in the $500.00 range, I might have tried to sell you the Brooklyn Bridge.

If FN no longer supports the pistol by providing replacement parts, owning the HP could become a liability.

I think SOMEBODY will supply after market parts for the HP for a long time to come. Parts should not be a factor.

I got my one-and-only HP about 7 years ago.

Every time I pick it up I think "I'm holding history in my hand."

Default Movie Use

As I recall, Eddie Murphy used a Browning HP in "Beverly Hills Cop." Likewise, the James Bond movies popularized the Walther PPK while the many westerns did not exactly hurt the Colt SAA.

As law enforcement agencies and perhaps military units phase out the Browning, some may make it to the used gun market but many others were destroyed. While the NYPD never issued Brownings, any and all guns (except the John Lennon and Son-Of-Sam handguns) they have seized either at crime scenes or from permit holders whose permits were revoked for any reason, are never placed in the used gun market. They are destroyed. A personal friend abandoned his HP to the NYPD rather than going through the hassle of retrieving it from the police property clerk.
He was ill at the time and was notified that his handgun was destroyed when he failed to retrieve it within the prescribed amount of time.

If there is enough (even less than current) demand, another company besides FN will continue to make parts and even whole pistols. Witness the Hungarian and other clones of the '80s. Speaking of the Colt SAA, that went out of production until demand went back up...you never know if something is gone for good.

There are far too many out there for them to demand much scarcity premium, at least for the intermediate-term future. I have fired several Brownings, and would like to have one if one were offered to me cheaply enough, but I already have enough 9mms (3) to satisfy my desire for any more.

Browning's problem is simple, and doesn't have a good solution on their part.

There are tons of used HPs available on the market, for maybe half the price of a new one. These guns don't just fall apart, so once you get one, you will have it awhile. You can have one refinished to like new, and still beat the new sticker price.

So, many, many HPs are being owned and bought/sold, but Browning isn't getting any cut of that business... they're sitting on an expensive model and watching it gather dust on the shelves. Even for those buyers that only want new, that's a small percentage overall, and a one-time group that can't be counted on for further sales.

I think S&W ran into this business decision with their metal guns, and Beretta and Sig might be approaching the same issue soon; they have a great product that has reached market saturation, and it's not profitable to keep making it.

All this being said, it is still my favorite hi-cap 9MM and has been since 1971.

I agree, and would expand the scope to even folks who do know one end from the other. I remember reading a good bit about various "special" units that were using fancy 1911s in lieu of their agency-issued Glocks. I also recall reading that most of them eventually went back to the tupperware at some point. I'm sure there are examples that will prove me wrong, but the majority of service pistols are not going to be SA.

I probably shoot a HP or 1911 more than any other autoloader at the range. But, if I'm carrying one, it's most likely TDA.
Furthermore, if you tell me I'm going someplace where there's going to be shooting, I'm borrowing a Glock 17.
