Default Bought "overpriced" Ruger MK III....

Had a MK II years ago, recently I found out one of my cohorts was selling a LNIB MK III, six inch standard, tapered barrel. It had a scope once and so there is some minor marring at the attachment area, but otherwise in perfect condition (two mags, 100 rounds shot through it). I reason is put "overpriced" in quotations is that the new MK IV is NOT CA approved, and we who are searching for the MK models are stuck with MK I through III examples that are currently residing in this state. The only one I saw on sale at the gun show this last weekend was a MK II for $500...Prices on Gunbroker are far more reasonable, but each seller ads the caveat about no sales to CA due to our onerous and confusing laws. I ended up paying $400. Well, I got mine!

It's the supply, the demand, and the state gun laws that influences the prices now. Sometimes we're lucky to find what we find. I'm sure you will enjoy it. I replaced the one I traded in years ago. I won't part with it again.

I don't think I would use "stuck" in a pejorative way. The Ruger Standard Models through the MkIII are all fine guns. I personally don't see that much advantage to having a MkIV over the earlier versions.

I'm curious, what is the difference in the two models that allows the MKIII to be okay to sell in California but not the MKIV? I'm sure it's a very reasonable explanation.

I have MKII, MKIII, and MKIV versions of the 22/45. I lean towards the MKII as the best shooter although I love the threaded barrels on the MKIII and MKIV for stealth shooting.

I wouldn't trade my early production MK II-it's the most accurate hand gun I own; a peach.

You are going to love your new plinker. You paid extra because of the location, but it is worth more because of the location too. If you decide to sell you won't loose money. Good investment IMHO. Enjoy it.

I think that under California law it doesn't mater how minor the difference is. A model 19-5 might be approved, but that doesn't make a model 19-6 good to go. Or if the blue steel version has been OKed, the exact same gun in stainless still needs its own approval to be sold in Calif.

The law it not supposed to make sense in any practical safety or consumer protection. It is supposed to curtain gun sales, which it does quite effectively

By stuck, I meant we can't get them from out of state, referring to limited supply....sorry for the confusion.

I suppose I should have bought a Mark II, but I have never regretted my plain-vanilla Mark III. It was just sitting under the glass calling my name with a price tag just a little north of $300.00. That was ten years ago. I'd be glad to give $400 for it today. Even with the mag safety, the loaded chamber indicator, and the "clunky" stock trigger, I still shoot it better than anything else I own.

Default MKIII

MKIII here also. Ten years old and many thousands of rounds of enjoyment. A tack driver out of the box, and a few little goodies added over the years

I just saw a MkII target model with the 10" bull barrel yesterday for sale at a gun shop for $349. I couldn't believe the price. The only thing more amazing was the customer service. I waited 15 minutes to get waited on and they called exactly ONE number in that time. When they finally finished talking to one of just two customers they were helping they waited on someone who just walked up a minute earlier. I left without the MkII I've waited on for a decade or more at the best price I've ever seen one for. I'm done with that gun shop. I've probably sent one of their kids through college with the money I spent there but they won't get another dime from me. Sorry but I won't use this board to slam a gun shop. So no names.

Actually prefer the Mk II significantly over the Mk III because of all the "improvements" that aren't on the Mk III. The Mk IV has one advantage, if you're mechanically limited its far easier to maintain.

The initial purchase price of these little pistols isn't so bad... it's the attachments that put a hurt on the wallet.

I've overpaid for numerous guns over the years and depending on its rarity and/or how badly I wanted it, I've never really regretted it.

+1 and with the current recall plaguing the Mark IV and very limited models at this point, you're not really missing much especially if you know the few simple tricks it takes to field strip the earlier guns, it's not really a big deal and IMHO I am not pleased with the fact that I have to send my new Mk IV back in to get fixed. I should have bought a nice used Mk II taper barrel and really wish I would have.

You did good with your purchase.

My MkIII's with full Volquartsen parts. I use them as training guns for students and they have had literally hundreds of thousands of rounds between them with no broken parts. My 12 year old grandson can fieldstrip the gun after a five minute demonstration on how to do it. I have never had a customer that didn't smile after shooting these guns.

Then you never overpaid - you paid exactly what it was worth to YOU.

We never over pay, soon the increase in price will follow. Trust me.

Fact, my 1976 ruger gf-32 bi police service six with the inscription. I just seen one sell without the inscription for $750. Ruger's are collectible now.

I purchased a Russian tokarev sniper rifle. Fact I was looking for one at a 500 table gun show. Table number 500, the last gun was the tokarev. In refurb unshot condition, the gas valve was turned off. I paid $650 a tab more than I wanted to pay. Within six months the prices were $750.
My point is we can't lose don't worry.

I never seen a s&w or colt or ruger used revolver in decades. I beat the bushes five days a week looking. Not a one. All of a sudden my online ffl dealer had three. Buy or not to buy? The choice was easy. Supply and demand, does lightening strike twice I'm not waiting.

I'm still stuck with my ca. 1955 Ruger Standard Model. Works and looks as good as it did when I bought it back in the 1970s after unknown thousands of rounds have passed through it. Assembly and disassembly problems are grossly overstated. It would still be my number one handgun if I had to go into survival mode. Light, simple, and reliable.

If you've ever tried to takedown any Ruger before MK IV you'd know the advantage they have.
Typically, I've been reading lgs are stocked with the earlier Rugers that were traded for MK IV's. And the prices are way less than $400.
Too bad OP is "stuck" in CA.
Another plus over a MK III is NO Loaded Chamber Indicator.
Don't get me wrong, I'm a Ruger fan.
Top row: MK III 22/45 Lite and MK IV 22/45 Lite
2nd row: Volquartsen Custom MK III and MK IV Hunter
Both MK III's have disabled LCI's.
