bag of gun parts, Savage 1907, 380

stopped in at my local country store/ gun dealer Saturday afternoon, and he brought out a Ziploc bag full of gun parts, containing what looked like a complete pistol.
he said that he had taken the gun in that condition for 10 bucks worth of gas , knowing it would not work, and that he did not know out how to reassemble the pistol.

so he said he would sell it to me for $25 bucks, so I jumped on it, brought it home and watched a you-tube video on how to put it back together

and diagnosed the original failure that caused the gun to quit running, it was a broken sear trip catch.

, I experiment with jb weld and actually got it to fire one round and it hit at point of aim, and ejected the brass an re-cocked the striker, so then I new the gun was worth the $13 part from Numrich

it showed they had one in stock and I ordered at that moment so now I am waiting for it to arrive so I can get this 102 year old gun back in operation and running at full speed

on the web it showed they shipped with steel, gutcha rubber, ivory and pearl grips and with the yellowing its hard for me to know for sure, there is no grain in the grips like ivory would have and there is some translucence swirls in the grips does MOP yellow with age?

1915 model 1907 savage, double stack mag that holds 9 rounds, its a really neat old pistol! points great I am setting on a case of 1000 rds of perfecta 380 I hope she gets to eat a lot of it

Very nice buy but I'd recommend you try and find factory grips for it.
I picked up a very nice Mauser Model 14 in 25acp for $50 at a garage sale awhile back. It was also in pieces and the owner told me it had been at a "gunsmiths" for over a year and he couldn't fix it.
I did the same thing and found an assembly video on YOUTUBE. After assembling it no luck and it still didn't work. I took it back down and sprayed the innards wth CLP and let it set overnight. Next day I re-assembled it and it worked just fine.

Factory grips will be hard to find, but the repro grips look petty darn good.

Lots of broken factory grips out there. It is almost impossible to remove Savage grips of this age without cracking them.

I paid a heck of a lot more for one (.380) that looks a heck of a lot worse!

I'd go with a set of repro grips too. Usually $30 to $50. Originals are getting very expensive as many are cracked from removal.
You actually have to flex/bend the grip panel just a touch by pushing up on it from inside the grip to release the bar extension piece of the grip on the back of the panel from the frame cut.
Then the panel itself slides out towards the back of the frame.
It's a neat system but old grips having gotten brittle w/age and being locked into the tight fitting little dovetail cuts in the frame by dried oil, ect make for a near sure failure of the material when removing most of them.
The ones on the pistol are most likely some sort of plastic, I'd hazzard a guess from the 50's or so.

I wish I could find $25 Savage 380's!! The original magazine is probably worth around a $100.

i will leave these grips on it they are a great fit in my hand and they have a lot of age on them, so instead of possibly destroying them I will just let them be

What a deal- I paid over a hundred for a .32 in worse appearance, and was pleased by that!

Don't mess with the grips... the gun I bought had 1 faded grip (stock), missing the other. I bought the replacement copies, and very gently tried to remove the old one (so the set on the gun would match). Followed all the instructions shown online.

Broke it almost immediately.

Yours look unique and in good cosmetic condition, I'd leave 'em be.

Got the part in that it needed monday,

I got around to putting it in today, she runs great, shoots to point of aim, while not a target gun she works well and I would not be ashamed to tote her.

Feels good getting a 115 year old gun back in action

Fed her a box of perfecta 95 grain fmj, and it is quite snappy

RILEY31 is right, the grips appear to be catalin are are quite a bit nicer than any kind of reproduction factory grips.
