Default Finished Knife Project

I finished this one up a couple of days ago. The handle is tulip wood. Each knife project is a hands on learning experience.

That is a beauty! I have dreamed of Knife making for many years. How long have you been at it. Do you have a history of helpful skills to help?

Thank you very much! I retired this past January and decided I wanted to take up knife making as a hobby. I would consider myself an average handyman with tools so those are the skills I bring to the table. I did purchase several books and literature on metallurgy and knife making as well as visiting blade type forum which are a gold mine of information.
There is a fellow named Walter Sorrells who provides a lot of good practical information. A quick goggle will get you his information.
Here are the knives I've made since I retired (minus a few that I have gifted.)

VERY NICE! Do you forge your own steel from blocks or billets? (If that is the right term?).

PS. I think I got my question right--"Forging is the application of thermal and mechanical energy to steel billets or ingots to cause the material to change shape while in a solid state."

Your skills are growing - absolutely gorgeous knives. The only thing in my opinion that would improve your latest knife is a lanyard hole at the butt - but that's only because I'm a knife lanyard guy.

Truly outstanding work.

Regards,

Dave

I started the hobby with stock removal, basically taking a flat bar of high carbon knife steel and grinding to shape, heat treating and tempering. I have recently acquired a gas forge and anvil and have slowing started to move towards forged knives. The fourth knife from the bottom in the group photo is forged and grinded. I have plans to eventually forge from a billet, maybe when it cools off a bit.
Attached is a photo of a semi forged Kukri I'm working on. I had grinded a plow shear shaped Kukri before I got my forge. I never liked the shape so today I put it in the forged and reworked it. Attached are before and after photos.

Default That's nice and simple.......

I wouldn't mind trying to make one, when I run out of things to do.

Of course it wouldn't be that nice.

Wow! I wish I had skills with my hands like that.

All those knives look great. They look like something someone who has been at it for years would produce.

Please continue to share you work....I find it very interesting.
