Default Help me pick a knife

Hi all, as you can see in the photo I have a folder but I'm looking for a fixed blade, no longer than 4" to accompany my 3.5" 27-2 with elk stags. Basically I think a field knife would go well, I tend to prefer drop point blades. Not for hunting purposes, general use/carry in a dark brown sheath.

Not looking for a collectible but one that I can wear and use. Thanks.

Anza WT-5. I gave one to my son not too long ago. I have been carrying a precursor for over thirty years. These knives are made from old files that are first annealed and tempered. I like the natural micarta, but didn't see it in the catalog the last time I looked. They did show handles in a couple of different woods. Mine was about $25 at a bike swap meet. Currently they are in the neighborhood of $65, with a pretty nice leather sheath.

The blade is only 2.75", 6" overall. I can just drop it in a pocket. I have another one with a similar handle in micarta with a blade just under 4". These are very tough working knives.

Puma makes some high quality, beautiful stag handle knives that come with brown leather sheaths. They have a good reputation. I own a Catamount Stag that I like a lot.

I've picked up a Boker Arbolito Stag caping knife.
Pictured is their Hunter version in 3 1/2 and they also make it in a 4 3/4 size.
These are beautiful knives. I'd love to get one of these.

Default JUST A THOUGHT

In that 1st pic, could the top part of the blade still be used as a file? I find the file on my leatherman wave to be one of the most used parts.

L. T. Wright Handcrafted Knives is the place to go. Made in Steubenville Ohio of all US materials. I have 2 or 3 of their elk scaled knives and love them. Great pricing too.

Probably not. It may vary from knife to knife, but I think those files are pretty much worn out.

It's hard to do that - since I view a knife as sort of a personal decision based on need, personal preference and type if use.

I know personally I don't like Stainless Steel knives (in general) as they are harder to sharpen and don't hold an edge the same as Carbon Steel does. Yea yea I know about the new Stainless alloys and do even own a few but Carbon Steel is still superior, to me. Since I don't get too bent out of shape by the staining, minor pitting and minor surface rust once in a while, I just maintain it and cherish the working and cutting qualities of Carbon Steel blades.

I'm sure if you stay within the higher quality brands and Makers what ever you choose will be fine - and it will be perfect for YOU.

I would go with a Bradford Guardian 3 in M390 with a leather horizontal sheath.
