Default Rock Island 1911's question....

Anyone shoot or own one.?
Don't want to bring my Colts to my place
on the coast due to the elements.
Looking at the RIA basic GI at $373.00 shipped.

Grab it. I have two, a GI and an Officer's Model shorty. Both are simply excellent pistols.

I bought a 9mm version last year cause I wanted to try one. I have been pleasantly surprised at how good the thing is. I would highly recommend one.

I have had a RIA GI for years and it has been a perfect shooting companion reliability wise. My two gripes have been terrible little sights and hammer bite. I finally broke down and sent it to Mr. Heinie for a set of slant pros. I also sat down this weekend in the garage, bobbed the hammer and installed a dual spring recoil system for the Colt rail gun. Only took a bit of file work on the guide rod to get rid a 20/1000 of width. Next stop is the range.

I'd spend just a hair more and go with the enhanced model. Better sights and a beaver tail grip safety. Same price range, look at the Taurus PT 1911. All forged frame and slide. Still full of MIM parts, but so are Colts and Kimbers.

I had a nickel FS GI that was scary accurate. It was actually boring to shoot it. I swapped it for a Springfield. Good gun also.

I bought a 9mm RIA a year or so ago off gunbroker cheap. I mean cheap too. The previous owner had spray painted it black, but other than that it worked fine. I got a 38 Super barrel, and fit it and a few other parts to it. Next up for it is to strip the paint off the frame so I can checker the front strap. Then probably some hard chrome to finish it off. Has been reliable and accurate. Last week I traded into a 10mm RIA Tactical with the full length railed dust cover. Haven't had a chance to take it to the range yet, but it is as tight as any Colt I have in the safe short of my Clark Gold Cup. Like others have said, RIA stands by their products. I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one. My only complaint with them is that the triggerguard has a slightly different radius than standard and they just look a little off to me. I've been considering squaring off the 9mm's as I have the tool to do it and not enough money in it to worry about doing a poor job (never attempted one before).

Shot a friend's RIA a number of years ago and was very impressed with the accuracy of it. Just as accurate as any of my Colts or Springfield to be honest.

I picked up a GI FS Rock Island. Thing will eat anything. I can shoot it well and have not had a single issue with it. I have well over 2k through it. Primary diet is 230 rn plated. Shoots federal hollow point with no feed issues. One of my favorite shooters.

I have a couple of them. They are a GREAT value for the money. It is hard to buy a better 1911 even at twice the price.

I bought my first 1911 a few weeks ago - a used officer model 1911-A1 CS. Seemed a little loose and rattle-y, but I've heard that complaint about 1911s before and didn't think much of it.

I took it to the range one time so far and it shot several rounds just fine - until the very worn recoil spring let the spring retainer bushing rotate and bind it up. I contacted RIA and they sent me a replacement spring and bushing at no charge. Excellent customer service IMO.

I got the new parts and put them in yesterday. MAN is that new recoil spring STIFF! It was pretty darned hard to get it back together it was so stiff. But once I did it seems to work quite well, though the slide is quite a bit harder to rack. I'm sure it will loosen up and get easier as time goes by.

I'm looking forward to taking it out again. I've also been looking at the FS models online and have found them for as little as $336 shipped. There's a nice used one at one of my favorite LGSs marked at $349. I think I'll try to talk him down a little on it. Maybe get him to throw in a holster or some ammo.

I love the looks of the Goverment Issue style 1911 and don't really like the looks of the fancy beaver tails, extended controls, and magwells so big they look like the mouth of a vacuum sweeper. I have the Rock Island GI commander size .45 and really like it and paid under $350 shipped brand new. I wish it didn't have the period correct sights which are just too small but it is a great shooter and pretty much equal to the Colt and Kimber I had.

The few GI's and Tacs. I've owned were fine. I knew a guy that bought a new Tac model in .40S&W that didn't want to lock the slide back on last round fired but RIA CS sent him a new lever which fixed it. IMO, probably the best 1911 for the money.
ETA:
Armscor makes several 1911's under different brand names. Consequently, I read somewhere that they currently make more 1911's than anybody.

I bought a brand-new GI in 38 Super. Wouldn't extract 38 out of 40 rnds.
Called 'em. Got the RMA that same day. Came back in 7 DAYS!
Shoots wonderfully now.
Great price, great service, very accurate.
Good pistol for the money.
I would buy again.

I have had my 1911 compact for over two years now with over 200 rounds through it. Nary a problem. I really like this pistol.

I also will jump on the I like RIA band wagon!! Heard good things about them and bought one of their mid size in .45 ACP (think combat commander with the cone barrel) Liked it so well I bought a full size Tac model in 45 ACP. Liked it so much I bought another full size TAC in 9mm. I rather think they are better than the old Colt series 70's, we used to call em a good starter kit because most wouldn't run outa the box.

The only problem with my RIA was the extractor. Not an uncommon problem from what I've read. $20 replacement and never another problem. Sticks out 1/8" in the back but this is a shooter not show piece.

Excellent. A customer just came into our range and offered his unfired compact 9mm with 5 mags and extra grips for $450. He asked me to test shoot it for function. Even with my old eyes, 30' two shots touching in dead center of a standard Bullseye target. A lady came over shot a mag full, destroyed the center of the target and walked out with her new gun. I think you will be pleasantly surprised at your purchase

I took a funiture stain pen to the bright white logo, it looks much better now because you can barely see it, I also bought some walnut checkered stocks from coolgunstuff.com for $19.95 and it looks and feels better too.

You might consider Black Nitride from H&M Metal Processing. Not quite as hard as chrome, but pretty close, and there's no dimensional change. Check it out.

I think you will be pleased with the RIA, I bought a commander size plain Jane version five years ago, to date have run several thousand rounds of HB and JHP's through the gun. It is as accurate as I can hold, and functions as well as my Colt's. I carry it when I feel the urge, and have complete confidence in it.

Rock Island has come a long way in the last ten or so years. The fit and finish used to be questionable.

I don't own one but if I thought I needed another 1911 I wouldn't hesitate. A few friends own them and my friends LGS sells a lot of them. They have no more or less problems than other more costly brands.

I agree, especially with their revolvers, which in my opinion is still a little lacking but for under $300, it's to be expected I guess. Plus 1911's are their strong suit. I was glad to see the slide RIA "billboard" shrunken in size on their current models. But as one poster has alluded to and to which I've done, a black felt tip pen helps tone it down as on my tactical model.

I've owned some high dollar 1911's over the years, but the only one I currently own is a Rock Island. Not that they're better than higher dollar guns, but they work and they're relatively cheap. Mine isn't a carry gun, just a fun gun, and it works great for that.

The only concern I would have with an RIA is that the parkerizing tends to rust. Keep that puppy well oiled

I had a "Compact" 1911 in 45 for about 9 years, and when the 9mm became available I had to have one of those also. They will shoot right along side my Springfield and my Colt Gold Cup. I have hears several comment they are the best buy in a 1911 for the money in the country. I tend to go along with that.

(not original grips).

Very nice!

You should treat it to a new set of grips!

Think I have a pair of WWII brown plastics
at the shop. Likewise, fairly sure I have an old WWII
tanker holster.

I own a RIA 1911 LOVE IT!!!! Spend a few extra bucks and get one with the upgrades. Rock island 1911"s are very good. 3000 rounds later I changed out the springs and added a extended mag release .

After reading all these positive comments, I bought one of the 1911A1/A2 TAC models yesterday at a gun show, 600$ out the door. Got it cleaned up off to the range today to give it a dance. Looks like a lot of gun for the $$$.

Friend's daughter had a RIA Compact and let me shoot it. Next gun show I brought one home. Can't make it jam. It eats SWCs as well as round nosed. It's sitting next to the computer as I type this. The picture is as it came out of the box: it's got checkered grips now and Novak night sights.

"what, no pics"???

Ran about 75 rounds through it today, played with the sights a bit, no 1" groups like a K38, a couple of 6" ones with a flyer or two.
Going to try some different loads with it.

Jerry Miculek doesn't have to worry about me taking his job....

What does MIM parts mean? I'm getting old and don't get out much.
