Your nomination for spectacular firearms at affordable prices
Although I have never even bid on one of their items, Rock Island Auction Co. regularly sends me full color fliers of upcoming firearm auctions. The featured items are stunning, with estimated prices to match.
At the other end of the spectrum there are guns which I also consider spectacular, but at much more affordable prices. My nomination in the category of a spectacular gun at an affordable price is the Remington 17 20 gauge pump shotgun. This one cost all of $375 at a local gunshop outside of Indianapolis:
What is your nomination for this category?

First to come to mind is the Remington 870, followed by a few Ruger entries.

I know there are more interesting answers than this but the S&W Shield has my vote for the bang for the buck firearm of all time.

My vote is the crop of 9mm handguns being surplused out, as Israeli and European police and military change to newer models.
Recently, I picked up a Beretta 92S. Older gun, but in good to very good condition IMO, and internals look great. $240 + shipping and FFL, still under $300 out the door. Quirky but very functional (for righthanders like my son , I'm a lefty).
Beretta-quality pistol, bargain price.
Not long before, picked up a 'beater' CZ 75 for $300. Made in '88, and the polycoat shows it. But under the polycoat is a parkerized steel frame and slide, and inside it's all CZ goodness, with a silky trigger.
I've seen a lot of S&W 9mms repatriated in this wave, from all three generations. Picked up a 39-2 for $299, and the import mark on the gun tells me it was overseas somewhere.
These are good guns, often in need of no more than a spring swap (if that, but it's a cheap step), for something that will last a lot longer and still run well.
If you insist on new guns, look into the sub-$400 1911s coming out of Turkey and the Philippines. These are not like the Spanish Llamas of years gone by, where you'd get a gun not compatible with the true 1911s, and often would not run well... these are real 1911s, with fully interchangeable parts, made of quality steel, on precise CNC machinery. They run as well as guns that cost twice the price.

S&W stainless police type revolvers in nice shape. Many ex-police guns, some in quite nice shape. Model 64-66 or M-686.
CZ-75B 9mm auto in the basic black finish.
Used or on-sale Beretta M-92FS 9mm. Italian police surplus M-92S, some about new, for $299-399. Change the locking block, though, to the new one.
Used Remington M-870 shotguns or Ithaca M-37's, as you found. (Rem. 17 is the predecessor.)
I'd suggest stainless Ruger .357's, but people keep them, so few are on the market.
Marlin M-795 autloading .22's. Mine is the stainless form.

I offer up the Rossi 92 in 357 for your consideration. A great value and great fun to shoot.

If Smith, Glock, and all the other major OEMs see lets say a 1% warranty repair rare (i know its probably higher but just for example.) I know taurus is probably at 5%. That being said I have to nominate the PT111G2 because overall they are a fantastic bargain. One of mine had the trigger safety fall out followed by the mag release, but the other one is solid and they are both good shooters.

The Star 30M when they first became available. Should have bought one. All steel, very accurate, will take modded 59 series magazines with a small mod.
Sarsilmaz K2 45. Looks like a CZ-75 with Sig lock-up and takes a 14 round magazine. Mine cost me $380 brand new.

The winner by a mile is the NEF Pardner series of pump shotguns. They sell for about $150 brand new. They are nearly identical to an 870 Remington. All the parts are interchangeable except the barrels. The lug is in a different place which they did to keep from infringing on Remington's copyrights. They are built by Norinco actually. The Freedom Arms Group that owns Remington and NEF actually bought the production facilities in China because they were selling so cheap and taking business away from the 870. In some ways they are "better" than the 870. The finish is better than the 870 Express finish for example and it is less than half the price.
These are amazingly well built shotguns. Norinco can built very good firearms at times. Like most things made in China they just stole the design and built it cheaper than the original. I've owned 2 of these shotguns and I've never had a single issue with either.
Where else can you buy a pump shotgun built as well as an 870 for $150?

If you like hammer fired DAO pistols, the Sig P250 series pistols can be found used in the $300.00 range and new around $425.00. While these are being discontinued, the model shares barrels, magazines, and grip modules with the striker fired P320 models.
I own two Sig P250sc's a 9mm and a .40 S&W. Very good handguns.

Marlin Model 60 .22lr semi-auto rifle. Accurate, reliable and lots of fun at the range. Put on a scope and you have a great small game rifle. New for under $200. Tried and true. Have been in production since 1960.

Agree 100% with the Marlin M60 .22 auto. Picked one up new for just over 125$ last fall, accurate and so far flawless feeding after several 100rnds
Ruger LCP is a fantastic gun for being so cheap, I know "just" a .380 but an accurate-reliable handgun that goes anywhere!
Always seeing Mossberg 500's used for very cheap prices...excellent guns and tough to wear out. Bought one a few years back with a choke tube barrel and 20 vented slug barrel for 200$...great bargain!

These are a great buy and I wish Sig had not discontinued them. Not everyone wants a striker fired pistol.

Man, ain't that the truth.
I am at a very "mature" stage of development, both in terms of my advanced age (i.e., half-senile old coot) and gun collecting/accumulating activity. Nothing remaining on my "Want List" or my much narrower "Bucket List" is inexpensive or anywhere near a bargain. I am done for good with cheap plastic wonder guns and that makes it even harder in terms of finding great bangs for the buck.
What used to take a month or so of savings for a nice new acquisition now takes two, three or even four months. Such is life. It could be a lot worse.

For a rifle I strongly recommend the Ruger American. I've got a few and they are great shooters at entry level prices. I actually cleaned out a gander mountain near me when they went out of business and grabbed some extras. Throw a nice stock on and they are classy and accurate.

Used revolvers I would have to say the Ruger line of SAA revolvers. I have $425 in this older model (larger Blackhawk frame) Vaquero. Every time I pick it up I can't believe the bang for the buck it provides.
I also echo a former posters vote for the Rossi 92 lever guns. I have one in 45 Colt I have about $395 in and it's a great shooter for the money.

My 6906. Aesthetically pleasing, tough as nails, pleasant to shoot and still affordable. I could use another, or one of it's kinfolk.

I gotta' ad anything in the AR-15 market right now, Colt. Smith. Ruger, Bushmaster. The prices are pretty low in the gun shops, and even cheaper on line. Some dealers are throwing in ammo to sweeten the deal. I f you are looking for your first AR rifle there is no time like the present to get a great deal on a great platform.

I love older store-brand guns. Glenfields, J C Higgins, Ted Williams, etc. I bought a Hawthorne bolt action 30/06 (J C Penney store brand) that is an FN Supreme action. I paid less for it than a Ruger LCP.

Plus 1 on both of the above. I have several of the STAR 30M and 30P models and they shoot as described. Heavy, but laser accurate.
As to the K2, I wish I had bought a half a dozen before they discontinued import. They will work with a Para Ordnance mag with no issues and are about as soft shooting and accurate hi-cap .45ACP as you will find.

FN Hi-Power (vs Browning). Essentially the same gun produced in the same factories by the same people. FN is about half the price of the Browning.

Targetsportsusa has them $369, free shipping, in stock. I've seen the link in the last two or so emails I've received from them.
So you're looking at the price of an FFL + that, I can get one for $20 to my range.
The way it's dropping, I'm now inclined to hold out for sub-$300. It's not a functional hunting shotgun, so there's limited use in it. Below 3 bills it becomes an affordably priced toy.

I've got a ruger 10-22 stainless & a Ruger Mk 1 .22 that I have $320 in the both of 'em.... Bought used. Phenomelly accurate and reliable, given the cost. I don't have a clue about new firearms, been a while since I bought one of them.

Going to upset a few people here, sorry but,
All things considered, the best heavy 357 mag revolver ever built is the Ruger GP100

I should point out the Savage rifles I've bought. They may not be the best looking rifles around (the .22's look really good) but they are crazy accurate and to me that's the real beauty of a gun. I have one Savage that will shoot 5" groups at 500 yards all day long as long as the wind isn't bad. I have a .22 Savage that is the best shooting .22 I own. I shot this target with it. To me that's where the real beauty comes in. This is 4 shots at 50 yards because I ran out of the ammo I was using or it would have been 5 shots. I paid $300 for the rifle that shot this target. It's pretty much impossible to tell how tight this group really is. It's basically just one bullet hole size.

I second Ruger P series pistols. I have a P89, 9mm. It fits my hand, is built like a tank, and I shoot it better than any other semi I own. Big, heavy duty gun and hold 14+1 AND I like the decocker.

my vote would go to the Savage Model 12FV. i own 2 of them, one in 308win & one in 223rem, they are both 1/2 moa guns. i picked them both up new for $369 apiece (on sale) a couple years ago. i topped both of them with vortex viper scopes and was astonished how well they shoot, i dont know how savage makes such an accurate rifle for such an affordable price?

A couple of years ago Sportsmans Superstore had various 3913 models for sale very reasonably. They were x PD guns and I think I paid $360 each for a well worn but not abused 3913LS and even better, a 3914LS.
The same place had VZ58 rifles (an AK variation) with 4 magazines, sling, etc. for about the same price. I thought that was a great deal.

Older 870 trap guns. For $400-$500 you will have a hand fitted exceptionally smooth action with stunning wood. Most trap is shot one shell at a time anyway
CZ75B, even new ones.

The original Marlin 880 SQ "Squirrel Rifle" .22 LR of 1996. I bought mine used for $115. The first year rifles like mine had barrels left over from Marlin's Olympic match rifle. Feed it good standard velocity ammo and the rifle will post 1/3 to 3/4 inch groups at 50 yards all day.
Also, the Ruger Mark II series pistols. Few .22 LR pistols can digest as many different types of ammunition reliably. Give them a load the like and half inch groups at 25 yards can be had. Pretty good for a gun which you can buy used for $250-$275.

I'm really being impressed with my Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor. When it do my part it will shoot nice 1 inch groups at 200 yards with factory loads. I have nephew with a .243 that does the same. The stock feels like cheap junk but darn these rifle shoots.

I shot this target at 125 yards with my Savage 12 LRPV. It's not the cheapest Savage but compared to other rifles that shoot like this it is very cheap. Again this is 4 shots at 125 yards. It's 4 shots because it's the last of 10 that I used to zero the scope in after the rifle had been banged around some in the safe.

I really like my Ballester Mollina...It cost $300 and runs like a top. Other than that almost any mil-surp sporter like a springfield or a lee-enfield; both attain great accuracy for just a couple hundred dollars. Then you have old single barrel shotguns going for $100 all day that will never die.

Two groups immediately spring to mind............
First S&W Performance Center Autos from the early to mid-90s. Hand built custom guns.... built by the last of the S&W gunsmiths.....at around $700-800 at a LGS they were a great value vs. buying a 39-2 or 59 in the 80s and sending it off to be made into an ASP,Trapper of Devel ...... they cost the price of the Smith($300) + $1,400 or so IIRC for the conversion.
Second are CZ's rifles....... rimfire and centerfire...... old world Mauser actions, good to great walnut stocks....... including my favorite, the FS/mannlicher ..........$300-$450 for rimfire Models and about $700 for centerfire. The 253 rimfires and all centerfires come with single set triggers!
Oh ya................ most are MOA shooters
I've got a Ruger American Compact in .22magnum........ great little gun for the $$$s

Used glocks. I am patient and I find mine for around $300. Not too many firearms out there that last 50,000+ rounds and you can buy quality mags, sights, or other parts for dirt cheap
I purchased a lightly used Gen 2 Glock 17 with 100 rounds of 9, a holster, and 4 mags for $290.
Also a Gen 3 Glock 27 police trade with one mag for $317

Best bang for your buck for pistols in my opinion is by far the CZ75.
The CZ75 and its variants are still generally very underrated firearms, especially at their price point. I could go on and on about why I absolutely love these pistols, but it's even better to just shoot them and see for yourself.
For shotguns, once again CZ takes the cake. The CZ 912 could cost twice as much and it would still be worth it.
For the AR platform my vote goes to Colt with the 6920 and 6940 models.

What... no one here thinks the good old S&W model 10 or it's 38 Special M&P predecessors aren't a great buy?
Think about it... millions made, affordable, reliable, and chambered in one of the more accurate handgun cartridges available that is also inexpensive and easy to find and reload. And it is still possible to find one for less than $300.
I'll also vote for the Marlin Model 60. My brother bought a used one several years ago that looks as if it was kept in a barn for 50 years. But it will reliably shoot off the tacks holding the target up at 25 yards. Marlin's 25 N 22 bolt action rifle is a great buy too.

The old Ruger P series auto pistols. I have a NIB Ruger P90, and it is one of the most reliable production 45's you can find.
They won't win any beauty contest, but you can count on them to work.
