Default Ruger GF-84NYCPD Police Service Six

This is a rare NYPD Ruger, Model GF-84NYCPD Police Service Six (stainless). Folks say that there are about 10-12 in circulation, but there have to be more. It's probably not really that rare.

This was made / shipped in mid-1987 and sent to NYPD's equipment section. Like the S&W NYPD revolvers, these were not issued; rather, officers purchased the weapons directly from the department. Double action only internals. It has the NYPD armorer's "star" stamp in the crane. It is about the same size as a K Frame Smith & Wesson, a bit bigger. Chambered in .38 Special, as opposed to the usual .357 Magnum. It fills a hole in my growing collection of NYPD revolvers.

Anyone know about the "R" stamped in the crane?

I wish I had something more intelligent to say than "Wow" and "I like it!", but: Wow, I like it!

A fine service revolver, jibes against Ruger aside. The NYPD officers I knew who carried them (the blued model) had no problems and trusted them. I would love one, or a Speed-Six, if it wouldn't just sit in the safe...

A gorgeous piece - congrats on having it in your collection. NYPD wheelguns seem to be getting harder and harder to find these days. Still looking for a nice 4" Model 64 NY-1 myself.

Try Davis Shooting Sports, they get them now and then. Lots of NYPD retirees in Rockland and Orange.

The Rugers are quite nice shooters, even with me wanting to not like them!

Heres some of mine, they are difficult to find.

The "R" on the crane stands for "Remit "

As in "Remit to 357magger in New Orleans."

I thought everyone knew that.

Nice find. Congratulations.

Thanks for sharing it.

Oh sure give away the secrets

Davis hasn't had much lately...

The NYPD revolvers kind a dried up as the guys retired and sold them off. They haven't had revolvers in quite some time...

I had lots of luck buying on Long Island too. The shop near Nassau Coliseum had a good turn over of them long ago.

I would guess it’s the first letter of a gun brand. Maybe Remington?

That a really cool Revolver, congratulations.

I really dig old Police/Military Service firearms. I own a California Highway Patrol Smith & Wesson 4006TSW that was my personal "Grail Gun" as some say.

I had my eye on Italian Police Beretta 92S as well, but they dried up in early November and I missed out.

Nope he’s still in the same spot.

Keep in mind that the limited availability of what was once a flooded market is due to the fact that off duty revolvers have not been an option for the NYPD since 1997 and Service revolvers were last issued in 1992.

Glad to see my old thread revived. Here's an update on the revolver. It's sort of strange.

Decided not to go down the Ruger / NYPD rabbit hole like I did with the Smiths and listed the revolver on the "big auction site" with an optimistic "buy it now" price. This was a few months after the original post. A lady from Washington hit the "buy it now" within a day or two of listing. Called her to make arrangements and see if she could tell me anything about the "R" on its way out the door. I expected her to have an interest in Rugers, NYPD guns, or at least be a "gun person" of some sort. Nope. She just thought that it looked nice. She never bought a gun before.

She asked that I ship the revovler to an FFL in Florida. She worked for a federal disaster relief type agency as would reside in Florida for several months. Gave me the name of a large Florida FFL. I explained that the FL FFL would not do the transfer because she is a WA resident. I held the gun while she made arrangements in WA. Eventually shipped it to an FFL in WA where it sat for weeks before the buyer picked it up.

Subscribe, tomorrow I’ll post a pic of my NYPD Police Service Six. I had the cylinder bored to accept 357 after I retired.

Oh,yes, I've heard of remittance men. Mainly a British term, I think. Embarrassed their families in the UK, so were sent to colonies like Kenya and sent a remittance to live on if not self supporting. Didn't realize they lived in New Orleans, too, ha!

Yes, I'm trying to be funny, not offensive...

Why'd so many retired NY cops sell their guns? And for so little, when buying other guns might be a hassle there?

I'd regard my gun as a trusted companion and protector into retirement.

Is this just a NY attitude toward guns?

I can't say for sure other than they have a very large force. With that comes many personalities.

I knew guys that when they retired just left the guns inside the locker in the precinct. Then basically walked out the door for the last time and drove off in a u-haul...

Very nice example of a hard to find PD revolver. I am on the hunt for a PSP Ruger Service Six. They were in .357MAG, 4" bbl, stainless, they were not marked with any PSP logo but in a specific serial range. PSP didn't start marking their duty weapons until the introduction of the NP3 Beretta 96 in .40 S&W, so I am sure they are out there and folks just don't know they are anything special.

Or they took them to Jovino or one of the other dealers around town; the going rate for a long time was $25, regardless of condition.

Over the last decade or so, you can tell that the “revolver generations” of the NYPD have been passing away after retirement; the cheap (for today) HB Model 10s on Gunbroker offered up by gunshops in the greater NYC area are slowly drying up.

A bit of research revealed that the patrolman who owned the Model 10-6 in the attached photo worked from 1969 to 1989, and hung on to his gun; after he passed in 2013 his family apparently sold it to a local shop which put it on GB; I got it there about 5 months after his death (not knowing any of this).

I see very few of the PSP Ruger S/S guns around I remember when they had them . I think they had a subdued maybe a dull looking stainless finish . what was the range they were in ??? I picked up a nice S/S at Millers gun in PA quite a few years back and still have . I know PSP would stop at that gun shop a good bit , but a lot are not gun guys. I know one who traded his Beretta 40 cal for a old welder . I just sold a unfired PA Fish Comm 96 D it was the Robar finish one , night sights but they were dead . I never used it .

I think BigBoku is thinking of the other Rich, K&R. That Rich still has the shop.
I was referring to the Rich that we both bought those NY-1’s from some years back.

Last I heard he still lives in Yonkers and works for the NYCTA. Matter of fact, he’s a member here, or was, RichS.

You see them in shops around Spring Hill Fl sometimes . There's whole neighborhoods of retired NYPD and NYFD retirees there . And as they start to get older they get rid of their guns . I scored a NYPD 5946 over there . Came with the box , marked NYPD and papers . He even threw in a NYPD shoulder patch .
