A 48-shot REVOLVER???
Yes, Virginia, a 48-shot revolver DOES exist! In doing some research, I came across this photo of such a revolver, obviously stemming from the early percussion era. It features eight 6-shot cylinders, each of which can be manually moved into firing position.
Perhaps a little unwieldy, but certainly innovative. I thought you would be interested in seeing it!

It sure does, and every "B" Western ever made proves it.

I thought this was going to be about a Hollywood action scene where the guy shoots his gun without ever reloading.
A person would need a strong wrist to hold that muzzle up on target.
Did I shoot 47 or 48. Now that's funny.

Looks like something JEB Stuart would have carried in a saddle holster.

The inventor sold his 48-rounder cheap. But he made big bucks selling speedloaders.

There are other styles of early high-cap revolvers. I once saw one which had a number of cylinders on something resembling a machine gun belt in the form of a loop. While they may have worked, such an arrangement would have been so heavy and clumsy as to be unusable in any sort of shootout situation. Never underestimate the ingenuity and inventiveness of early gun designers. There is a book by Lewis Winant titled "Firearms Curiosa" which is packed full of illustrations of such oddball guns. That book is somewhat hard to come by (I have an original copy) but there may be reprints of it available today.

If it fired black powder, why would you need 48 shots? If one was not mobile, one could clearly not see what one was doing after the first 6-12 shots. Go to a Cowboy match and watch a full power shooter sometime.

I don't even like the 7, 8, 10 shot revolvers.
A sixgun should be a six gun. I guess I'm just too conservative.

Use plenty of grease to cover the chambers. You don't want to get a chainfire when you shoot that one.
