I just love this old Colt
I just wanted to share my Colt police positive special from 1949. I just wonder what stories this gun could tell from its past. I assume a higher rank police officer carried it due to its great condition. You could tell it was carried when I bought it from quite a bit of wear on barrel but mothers mag polish made almost not as obvious. Bought it on consignment pretty cheap and only thing on tag said "factory chromed". Im assuming factory nickel but the most surprising thing is the matte finish on top, backstrap, fronstrap, and trigger guard. Done to reduce glare just so ahead of its time even each flute in the cylinder is done matte finish. Dont know how easy it is to tell on the pictures from my cellphone? She shoots great very accurate and tight. Almost perfect to me.

The plastic "Coltwood" grips are correct for that time. Don't be tempted to replace them.

The colt D frame is rather smallish and my hands which are medium size seem too large for the grip. My pinky tends to fall off the bottom. I had looked around here for some bigger grips but so many different size frames colt made over the years and will require they fir perfect so I was unable to find anything. I have since adjusted to a tea cup grip with my hands which works well for this gun. The grips are in great shape for their age so I will just keep them. This is a second issue gun I think, and it's the tactical like matte top and bottom finish that just amazes me. Thinking the whole tactical matte finish is a recent development to know they had this already figured out before 1950. Must of been too ahead of its time cause I have yet to come across a nickel police positive special with this same set up. I don't know if custom ordered or if it went back to colt? I know the colt letters usually will not include if gun came back as their record keeping was even less than S&W.

For shooting purposes, have you checked on eBay for Colt D-frame grips that might fit your hand better?

No I have grown accustomed to the gun now. Works great with palm of other hand underneath. We tried about 10 different grips in the shop on the gun and none fit correctly. They made a lot of Suttle changes over the years so I would need to be sure they fit perfect in person and has not been a priority. Just a different hold I use for that gun. It doesn't see near enough range time to warrant the 3 times a year she goes.
