Mammoth Ivory for my Heirloom Colt SCG
A few months ago I was really wanting a Colt M45A1, specifically the two-tone black and grey. As luck would have it, the dealer who claimed to have two in stock had none on hand. So I went away a might frustrated.
However, I came upon this Colt Special Combat Government a few days later. Since Colt now has a CNC machine to do frontstrap checkering in their Custom Shop, some of their models are a little more appealing to me.
This little beaut' came with a sub one-inch test target, but was still missing something. After a few more days' of hunting around, I came across a few pairs of mammoth ivory grips that were magwell cut. The ones I chose may not be as impressive as some other examples, but there is some real subtle beauty in them to me.
I haven't shot this thing yet, but that hasn't kept me from having it in my hands for hours. I said that it was a birthday gift to my next (and last) child when they come into this world in a few more months. However, he or she might end up with a 'slightly used' present.
Really looking forward to the day I can pass it on.

I think you made an excellent choice for the grips. Just enough bark on them without going overboard with it. I've been eyeballing mammoth ivory grips for about a year now...along with pre-1972 walrus ivory grips. I want them for my Mark IV/Series 70 1911 in stainless as the next step in its evolution.
Congratulations on your choice.

As for "whining", wouldn't put it past some animal protectionist imbeciles to whine that we need laws to protect mammoths.
Some of these people just hate to see anyone enjoy using animal products.

Forgot to mention...that flat checkered MSH and checkered front strap look really good. I have the flat checkered MSH on my stainless, and the checkered front strap is also on my agenda for it.
Again...that's a good looking ol' Pony.

The Special Combat Govt's are up there in price in the Les Baer territory.
However they are excellent 1911s and I am glad to see that they now checker the front strap. They actually do a nice job of it.
They are extremely accurate pistols and while the slide to frame fit is not super tight, the barrel and bushing are fit as they should be, and the pistol will group on target as good as anything else in its price range.
I really like the look of yours.

You had me at "Mammoth ivory". Always liked the dark blue with ivory stocks look, this is a very appealing variation on the theme.
I don't think I've ever seen an ambi safety like that; is it a factory item? How is the starboard-side lever held on?

A guy I know who shot skeet a lot once told me that some yahoo with a room-temperature IQ once chastised him about why he saw fit to kill so many of those poor skeet birds.
I suspect a few less-than-informed folks might think mammoths still exist...
...and they will probably get some others of their ilk to sign their petitions!

You are right. For the money I think that there are a lot of competitors that offer perhaps even a better product.
My reason for sticking with Colt though was that I now have an even number of Colt guns...makes parcelling them out to my kids a lot easier!

Mammoth Ivory (Fossil Ivory) is not AFAIK included in the Fed Ivory Ban/Regulation. It is included however in some States Ivory Ban Regulations and will undoubtedly be included in others as the idea gains support.
One of the arguments for including it in an overall ban is that enforcement officers can not be expected to be able to ID the difference betw the Mammoth Ivory and Elephant Ivory in many instances. There have supposedly been cases where the two have been mixed in attempts to cover the Elephant Ivory content n a shipment of supposed 100% Mammoth Ivory.
NY and NJ as shocking as it may be to some are two states that already ban Mammoth/Fossil Ivory at the State level. NY also bans Whale (tooth) ivory under the NY law that places the whale as an endangered species in the State of NY. I wondered why I haven't seen any in the Erie Canal in some years.
Kangaroo leather is also banned in NYS. Same endangered species thing,,must be true though. Like the ringed neck pheasant,,I haven't seen any in years in the wild around here.
One of the big atheletic shoe makers had one of their better/high dollar items pulled from the shelves a few years back in the state due to 'roo leather used in the sneaker. Bad shoes,,,,
If the Feds can't reach you,,the States can.. Watch them closely.
