Thinning the Herd
We just had a thread on end game firearms strategy.
I am holding firm on my handguns.
In fact I sometimes buy another one!
But I have 'thinned' my long guns down to one center fire rifle.
It's a Carl Gustof in 30 awful 6.
Have you thinned?
What did you keep?

You will not be under gunned with the correct ammo.

Thinning the Herd
Not thinning here, some trading tho! Keeping 2 family long guns, the rest are in danger. Keeping a 4" nickel Python, Smith 9c and Bodyguard 380. Also a Savage Hog Hunter 308. Everybody's different. BTW, Carl Gustof made rifles for Smith IIRC, and maybe Husqvarna and Howa. The 9c is amazingly accurate and you'd be surprised how well the 380 is at 15 yds.

I still have the first gun that I ever bought!
Bought at the big Memphis Sears Store about 1954.

I need to do this. I have handguns that didn't work out for me and milsurps that came as package deals but are outside my field of interest.

I have narrowed calibers. Only 5.56 and 7.62x51 left. Everything 7.62x39, 30.06, .270, 30-30 are gone. handguns are difficult, .38/.357 are most, 9mm in autos although .45acp are around, a few .44mags, a couple .45 Colt and a lonely .32 NAA auto. 12 ga. for shotguns, don't see a need for lesser gauges. Still need to offload some. Joe

Yes, I have sold my M1 Garand, and a Remington 700VS in 22-250 (I still have another). I'm down to the point that I don't want to part with any of the remaining long guns. S&W's I'm still buying.

Not much to thin but sure would like to add that 1873 Winchester even though made by Miroku. Heard they are finished very nice.

I had a local auctioneer sell off about half my collection last year, mostly duplicates and stuff I never shoot. It opened up enough space for me to add several S&W's.

I haven't exactly thinned, but I've slowed down on accumulating. I have sold and/or traded some duplicates and some things that I won't ever shoot to acquire some different stuff that I like and will shoot. My goal now is getting the things that I want, and not just acquiring to acquire. If something comes along and I'm not willing to trade or sell something in the safe, then I'll buy it if it adds variety. As an example, last week, my LGS called and told me he got a Mossberg 590 Marinecote Shockwave in with my name on it until I refuse. I had a Beretta BU9 Nano just sitting around, so we worked out a trade. Since I already had a black Shockwave, I didn't see the need to make a cash deal, but the trade made me happy. I'm also on the lookout for a Ruger Scout .308 in LH, but only if the right deal comes along. I'm not sure that I've got anything that I want to trade to get it, so the cash price will have to be right . . .

Not thinning here.... still getting fat.
When I do thin out my general plan is to get them to homes they will be used at.
I have a lot of guns that mean something to me.
I want them to mean something to the recipient.

Back in 2000 I gave all my long guns away. When I told my wife
she said "you did what - are you crazy?"
That is why I'm called crazyphil.
One of them was a Winchester Model 70
30:06 that I bought in 1958. (Maybe I am crazy)
PS I haven't missed them. I have enough revolvers
and semi-autos to keep me company.

I haven't really thinned my herd but I refuse to buy a second safe and that helps keep my collection reasonable.
If I want something new I usually find something in the safe that I can get rid of to make room for something new. I still have room to add a new handgun but if a new long gun is in the cards then something has to go to make room.

What's it worth to you if we don't tell your wife how much that Model 70 was worth?
My old Army Buddy Milt gave away a Luftwaffe drilling in the take down aluminum case!
I have passed down a few guns to my Son and SIL.

I have and on occasion, still do. Guns that get kept generally fall into three categories- family guns (heirlooms and gifts), guns that I regularly shoot or ccw, and safe queens. Most things that fall outside of those get sold. Used to do lots of duck hunting and occasionally deer hunted but no longer do so Benelli SBE2 and Win 94 30-30 had to go, bought a Benelli M2 Tactical but preferred my old 870 Police Mag so Benelli got sold, etc.

I call this "passive thinning". I have been deliberately avoiding gun shops and gun shows, mainly because my wife and I have just moved into a much smaller property from an acreage. All my reloading equipment and most stuff affiliated with guns is still in boxes......somewhere. But a shooting buddy, at church this morning, asked if I wanted to hit the gunshow next weekend with him, and without much thought , I said I would. I have some cash freed up for the shooting budget, so I'm sure I won't find anything I "really " want. That's the way it seems to work...when I have money, nothing seems to appeal to me; when I'm short on cash, I always see something I "need"

Well, I recently sold a nice 13-3 to a forum member here. But, then I turned around and bought an 18-4, locally, from an acquaintance.
So....I guess I'm even.
