The rib on the left side is usually said to identify a 380 cal magazine,,and that is correct to point. The 32 mags generally don't have the rib, but there are exceptions especially when you start to get in to aftermarket magazines.
The pistol frame on many postwar production,,especially the Ranger Arms production guns were cut for the rib both the 32 & 380 cal.
Just using one frame for the pistol production line.
So those guns in 32acp will accept the supposed 380 cal only ribbed magazine. Something the reasoning for the rib in the first place was to avoid mixing up.
The actual need for the rib is to allow a small outboard step on the 380 magazine follower that catches and activates the the slightly shorter extending 380 slide hold open after last shot or on an empty mag.
The orig design didn't have it, this is a post war re-design.
This avoids the slidestop being activated by a round instead of the follower.
The rib is the mag wall enclosure that the extra step on the follower rides inside,,just extra room for it.
It makes for a bundle of confusion at times when matching up unkn PP and PPK/s magazines of aftermarket make as some have the rib, some don't.
Some aftermarket makes have the rib on both calibers.
Some on 380 only,,most mags are not caliber marked, ect.
