This Cimarron Uberti, which I reworked as seen, I compared with a near-new Stoeger Uberti.



Differences in fit, finish & function illustrate to me the fact of claims that Uberti's are delivered to some re-sellers according to what they pay for. The Cimarron grip fits the wood perfectly while the wood on the Stoeger fits the backstrap contours but with a little overhang in places & more on one side than the other.

The Stoeger blue is good but not nearly like the old-time Colt blue as is the Cimarron, which is as close to my early 1900s Colts as Turnbull's charcoal blue.

Action-wise the Cimarron is smooth like it had an action job, with less mainspring force & has the standard hammer function without the "load 5" safety. The Stoeger has that safety built into the hammer & fortunately in not offensive to look at. Its action is clunky, giving feel & force to each action of trigger & bolt.

I can also report the Cimarron CCH on the frame is real, in the metal rather than a color coating. When I engraved one side I carefully remove the CCH from one side & engraved it. Then ---- "Why ?" & engraved the other side without removing it, nickel plating both sides ---->

Lovely snubs! Any chance of smoothing out the action of the Stoeger? Slick little guns warrant slick actions, IMO.

I hope you don't mind my interjection with a question on the 'safety' of these. I know about the 2-point base-pin, to allow the hammer to rest away from the firing-pin. BUT...the very first miniscule click to the rear ALSO seems to allow the hammer to rest back OFF of the firing-pin. I can see NO protrusion of the pin through the breechface. Is that ALSO a 'safe' mechanical position to rest it, and allow for full-six loading???

That 'first click' (on a 4-position hammer) was originally intended as a safety provision to allow the hammer to be carried off the primer of a live ctg. Somewhere along the line, it was deemed inadequate, hence the hammer block, long base pin, et al.

So, is that first click also a feature on the original Colts? I handled a stainless El Patron a week or two back out of sheer curiosity, and I felt myself really drawn to it, LOL

Yes.

Be aware that not all of the reproductions are similar to the original Colts in this manner. There are all kinds of ideas on "improving" the safety of the gun. The real safety lies between the ears of the gun user.
