Anybody else like the Savage 24?
I bought one a while ago in 30-30/ 20ga. for deer and fall turkey season. I was surprised by a flock of turkeys while deer hunting a couple of years ago and thought this was a good solution.
I hope to make it pay off this year. It's not perfect for either, but well suited for the thick Virginia woods.

I've had a handful of various 24's, including a 30-30/20. It was a good shooting gun, put both barrels to point of aim with a rifled slug and any generic 30-30 at around 60-70 yds but one of my buddies has it now. I'm down to one, a little 24C in .22/20 with a vinyl roll-up case to store it in.

A LGS has one in 222/20 ga. I can get for around $300.00 from the mid 60's with a walnut stock.

I had a .222/20ga many years ago, that I carried on the trap line. I sure wish I still had it.

dad got gave me a .22/410 for my 13th birthday. 410 was great for rats !
.22 was so far off that the rear sight couldn't compensate. I now have a Ruger 77/22 for my .22 plinking requirements.

I also had the 24C, "Camper's Companion", .22 over a Cylinder 20 gauge. Idea was cool; but it was somewhat sketchy regarding accuracy.

I have a .222/20ga I bought locally about a year and a half ago. It is accurate with the world's worst trigger. Haven't gotten around to doing anything about the trigger, now you guys have put the bug in my ear.

Bought a 24V back in the 70's. I needed a quick inexpensive rifle for deer hunting and didn't have a lot of money so this fit the bill at the time!
Nice rifle and I still have it today.

I had one back in my younger days. Perfect "pot hunter" gun, but I was the reverse of most everyone else. Hunting deer with a rifle was against the law in my area, so I kept the shotgun barrel loaded with 3", No. 2 buckshot, and used the 22 barrel for everything else (22 LR/3" 20ga).
Good gun, it got sold when I got more interested in bass fishing than I was in shooting/hunting.

savage 24
I have always had a model 24 in 22/410 My present one has a weaver post & crosshair scope mounted on weaver seethrough rings. It clamps between the barrels and does not move between shots from the 410 bbl. As always the old firstsoldier

Always wanted a 24C, not willing to part with $300 plus for a single-shot though.

For awhile, I had one in .22 LR/20 Ga. I had some problem with the .22 position on the hammer. never quite figured out what it was. Sometimes the .22 barrel would fire, other times it wouldn't. In any event, I decided I didn't really need it for anything, so I sold it off (or maybe traded it) not long after I bought it.

I have a 22/20 that a former owner put a cheap red dot sight on. It is accurate at 50 yards with the 22 and a little low with the 20. A perfect jackrabbit gun. I would prefer a 357/20, that would be a grouse getter.

I've had a 24C for 30+ years. Don't use it much, but it is a fun little gun and the .22 barrel shoots decently for me. A long time ago I picked up a .30-30 liner for the 20 gauge barrel. POI is a little vague, but I guess you're supposed to use your stalking skills. As for power, I suspect that a 20 gauge slug would be substantial too.
The vinyl case has not stood up too well. However the Savage fits the case for Ruger's 10-22 takedown and the case is much better made.

Each of 2 of my cousins got one when they were 12.
They were a terrible choice for kids because cocking the things was so time consuming that they never got a shot off on a flushing bird before I did.
I had a Stevens 311 20 ga.

Several of the 24's I've owned had light strike problems. There is a lot of useful info out there, the most common problem seems to be the mainspring plunger adjustment. I've fixed a couple this way.

Savage 24
Mine is a .223/20 that someone before me painted in camo. Not pretty but real reasonably priced. The paint is slowly wearing off but still afraid I will misplace in the North Ga woods.

I have my granddaddy's .22/.410 Stevens. This one has the Tenite plastic stock. He bought it around WW II to bust the bunnies in his garden.
On my 15th birthday, I received a new Ithaca Model 49 .22 LR. Later that day, I was given Pop-Pop's Stevens.
That was a goood birthday.

I have 4.
Three 20 gauges under .22 LR and .22 Magnum.
Inherited ine from my dad after he died that is an O/U .410 with a pair of hammers that look like a single hammer that has been sawed lengthways down the middle.
This model may bave been the first synthetic stock long-gun ever marketed in the US. Made in the early to mid-1940's I think.
Have only seen two others.
Pretty cool old gun.

Kept a .22/410 in the seat pocket of my truck when I lived in Wyoming. My wife had a 2400 - the .308/12 gauge version Valmet made for them. Both were sold when money was tight. Wife sure misses that 2400.

My older brother got a 22/410 for Christmas 1963 and had it until he got into trading guns! He told me last summer, that wasn't the dumbest thing he ever did, but close to it!
I have picked up 4 of the 24's over the years. I had one with the opening lever on the side that was in 22mag/20. It is the only one I has that didn't shoot well
I have a 24 Camper 20" that has been my truck gun for around 25 years. I also have a 357mag/20 & 30-30/20. When I bought these 24's were in the $165-200 range used. They were never a cheep gun, just priced so you could afford to pick one up and not need another gun! The ammo storage compartment on the 24C is suppose to hold 2 or 3 20gauge and 10 22's, the "Trap door is so loose you'll just lose your ammo! There is no detent or latch.
I see them is the $300-450 range now and think how they have skyrocketed, but look how much any 2 barreled gun costs now.
Before the 22 ammo shortage of the last few years, I would be at the range and see teenagers and adults go through a brick of ammo and never aim a shot! With a fire rate of 3 per minute, they are not popular with the black rifle people!
The 20" barrel shotgun is a little rough bird hunting, but the 26" guns have done fine!
My truck gun has a "case" made from a tool box. It holds the disassembled gun, scope, sling, cleaning kit, 2 CCI boxes of 100 22's and an assortment of 20 gauge. I have plastic boxes for 600 Nitro ammo that hold 20 rounds. in that I have 5-#7.5, 5-#4, 5-No.3 buck and 5- slugs. I carry 2 of those boxes in the tool box. If it walks or flies in Ohio I can hunt it (I need to change some of the buck shot to #2 steel shot for low fling geese! Say 3-No.3 buck, 3- slugs, and 4-#2 steel shot.)
The 24-C is not the best woods gun I've used, but since it is with me I have gotten squirrels, rabbits, pheasants, quail, ground hogs, raccoons, and geese (before non-toxic requirements). I wouldn't have gotten those without it being in the truck!

Just thinking out loud, I've had the following:
.222/20
.22 mag/20
.22lr/20 (x3-4)
.22lr/20 (Camp model)
30-30/20
.410/.410 (Model 242)
Some had fancier stocks than others, some were actually fairly well regulated between the barrels. Some were not but I don't think that was the primary goal when they were designed.
Most I bought were in the 200-300 dollar range, sold most for 600+. Apparently these things are popular!
I gave my neighbor a .22lr/20 version a few years ago as he had a couple younger boys and I thought it would be a good squirrel gun for them at the lake.
They are neat guns for what they are, but I don't really use mine much (probably why I'm down to just the C model now). One of my buddies is crazy about them, his C goes everywhere he does and he uses it almost daily.

I have a nice one I picked up recently, a 24V in .223/20. Functions nicely, and was near new condition with a new Charles Daly 3-9 Japanese made scope on it (someone's safe queen)! I had been looking for one and basically bought it due to the useful combination. Nice color case hardened receiver but the flash washed it out in the pic.

I've had a couple of these over the years, one was .222 over 20 ga and the gun would break open every time you fired the 20! I always regarded these as inexpensive utility guns but a quick look at a couple of auction sites told me I was badly out of date! I'll have to keep an eye out at shows, they are too pricy on-line so far. Has anyone published a collectors guide to these models?

I'm no expert about it but I remember reading that steel shot is not good for a barrel not made for it.
I doubt that the older Savages were.
Just a word of caution, not fact since I don't duck or goose hunt.

I very much understand and appreciate the concern! However, the biggest concern about Steel Shot in older barrels is first: with Damascus barrels and second: with Full chokes. #1 really doesn't apply and as to #2, these are Modified chokes (for lead) and that makes them Full choke for steel. I still haven't bought a 20 gauge box of #2 Steel yet (I've never seen them on sale & I hate to pay full price!) I used to goose hunt with a 3" 12 gauge that had the chokes honed to IC/IC even though it was marked Mod/Full and those were really tight enough for 40+ yard shots (that is close) on geese. I have some other 20's that I may open up too!
