Default Python Value

Spotted a well used 6" blue Python at the LGS today and I have no idea if what they are asking is a good price or not. The gun was made in '65 and was clearly a duty weapon at some point in it's life. It has a pronounced turn line and moderate finish loss at the cylinder and muzzle. Pachmayr rubber grips are on it. Lock up is good and over all condition is fair at best.
I know prices are crazy on these things now but is $1300 too high on a shooter grade gun like this?

At that price I'm betting it'll be gone pretty quickly. If the gun is mechanically sound, I'd buy it. If you look at the current market for these guns, it's a steal. I own one in high condition that would be a bargain at double that.

Sounds cheap. Honestly at that price I'd suspect something else was wrong with it. If everything checked out OK and the inside of the coyly xrf and barrel looked good I would have haggled and bought it. I've been looking for a Python at a reasonable price since mid-2012. I ran across some at $1,100 to $1,300 back then but didn't buy because I wanted something a little nicer. Those guns have doubled in price.

One other thing; check under the rubber grips for rust on the right and left side plates.

Default That is cheap for a Python...

....if you REALLY want a Python. I really like my S&W 686.

When I was in there today I was taking the guy's word on the mechanical condition.
I never had it in my hand because I was trying to look at it without showing too much interest if you know what I mean.
This place is a part time operation and will be closed until Tuesday so I think I'll show up Tuesday morning and do a little more looking. And maybe let some cash do my talking for me.

Already there! I have a flawless 586 no dash in the safe now.
The only trouble is it's too nice for an old Hayseed like me to shoot.

Considering the price of Pythons. What makes the 586 to nice to shoot..

I just don't get it.

I don't know about prices in Texas but here in the fly over country prices could be described as "soft". Very much a buyers market.

I went to a big gunshow last weekend and very little money changed hands.
Good Pythons, no box but fine lookers, sat at $2000 without any interest.

Having said that to say this, try a thousand cash for your first offer ( if as others have said it checks out OK) to see if he bites and if you want it pay the full ask.

Thirteen hundred might be as good as it gets.

Here in Texas shooter grade pythons hover around the 2000 dollar mark. I bought a fairly worn one a few months back for 1700 and put a ton of money into it to make it look pretty......and I am glad I did. I shoot it and don’t worry about it. Here are a couple of pictures of the before with its stock grips and after with a set of some excellent reproductions from a member over on the colt forum. Buy it or let me know where it is and I will come out your way and take it. I am in Collin county.

Default Python Value

The mechanics of the gun were perfect but there was some rust under the grips which increased the cost, but I am happy with it and that is all that matters. Others may not agree with doing what I did but hey the fun part is it is my gun and my money and I love looking at it and shooting it. I have some original grips for this gen 2 1962 python but they are off being restored by another member of the colt forum that also does impeccable work.......

I love those old Pythons but could never come up w/the $$ to buy one. They were only found in the holsters of Hollywood movie cops. My only Colt is a 1968 Cobra, purchased new as my first off duty for $85, a King's ransom in 1968 when my annual salary was $6800.

Swamprat? He has done 3 sets for me. One pair (Gen I Python) he brought back from the grave, I didn't think anyone could make them look good. But he did need to graft some different wood into one area.

I also have a 4" 1962 Python. They look like cousins.

And just to round out the story on the python, it came with a holster. A SD Myres python.....how cool is that.

Very nice! Love the holster! I know someone who has a pristine six-inch, nickle-plated Python. He's not really a gun person and sometimes I wish I had the cash to make him an offer, but it would be just too much money for a gun I couldn't shoot. I DID get to shoot the same in four-inch - a friend's former police duty gun!

I seriously doubt you will get the LGS to come down on the price but it's worth a try. $1300 for a Python is cheap. Go to Gunbroker and check what Pythons is condition similar to yours are going for. Python prices can fluctuate year to year.

Years ago I bought my 1968 Python 4" for over 2 grand and it has some holster wear on cylinder edges and muzzle end. The finish other than that looks good and has original grips. At that time $1600 Pythons had chunks missing from the barrels or some other major flaw. They quite often didn't even get any bids.

I agree with the above post that for $1300 that Python will not be there for long if the condition is even fair with no major dings or flaws. If you get it be sure and post some pics of it. If I were you and I really wanted it then I would be there early Tuesday.
