Default Colt Official Police

First I apologize for no photos, I have never taken the time to learn how to post pictures.

I do have new addition and think it's kinda cool.

It is a Colt Official Police, manufactured in 1937, six (6) inch barrel, in 32-20. It has a ding on the left side of the frame, up by the hammer.

If anyone has anything to add to my newest friend, I would be grateful.

I'm a big fan of the OP model myself, my 1940s .5" in .38 has the tightest lock up of any revolver I've owned, bar none. Been on the look out for a .32-20 myself, so I'd say congrats on a fine snag if yours is in good shape mechanically. With the right load they can be real tack drivers too.

Enjoy'er and happy shooting pard!

You need to figure out how to post pics so we can see it! I like old Colts, I have a 1909 Police Positive Special that was cut down to 2" early in it's life. That little gun still locks up tight and is ready to get the job done if asked.

Another fan of the Official Police. I've owned several, including a nice one marked as "Dept Treasury Secret Service" from 1939. Sold that one to a collector of service marked revolvers.

Purchased another one a few weeks ago in 38 Special from 1943 according to proofhouse. Sort of unusual I suppose because most production during the war years most certainly went to Commando's for the military.

I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet, but others I've owned were good shooters.

I collect mostly target models, but I have two OP's. Both are .22, 4" and 6" barrels.

I would also like to see pictures, as I love old Colts too.

Nothing really to add about your example. I would give it a thorough examination to conclude mechanical integrity, then set about heading to the range if it passed. However, I would be gentle on it because pre-war2 Colts will be a lot harder to repair than post. The parts availability is the issue.

There are some sweet pre-war2 Colts out there, but I like to actively shoot and use my guns for duty, so I stick with post-war2 examples. Much better suited for many reasons.

Just FYI in case you go hunting for a holster, I have found that holster
fitting S&W K frame with adjustable rear sight will also fit the Colt OP.

Just FYI, yours wasn't made in 1943, but likely in 1942. I think someone showed a gun like yours here not too long ago.

We've had discussions with one of the Colt historians about this. Both the Proofhouse data and Colt's own serial look-up are not reliable for the war years. There is no evidence of continued OP production after the Commando started in late 1942, and that handful of special orders of OP's that are documented to have shipped between 1943 and 1945 are all assumed to have come out of existing inventory.

For a benchmark, I keep a note of the first Commando offically delivered according to the records in Pate. Still on the OP serial sequence, that was 724347, shipped 10/31/42. So any OP with a lower serial can be safely assumed to be from earlier. I have 696000 with a DOM of 3/26/42. Acc. to Proofhouse, that's also 1943. (See attached)

That was probably me who was in on that discussion. I just go with the Proofhouse number because it's a handy resource that confirms mid war production at the latest.

The S/N on mine is 698973.
