Default Anyone on the S&W Forum recently get or think of getting a SXS shotgun?

Just for fun I have bought three standard/field grade SXS shotguns over the past couple of years.

A Winchester 21 and an Ithaca NID in 12 gauge:

And a 20 gauge Baker Batavia Leader:

Not high end guns of the type that that can cost many 10's of thousands of dollars,
But very high quality, excellent condition
And most important -- a lot of fun to own and shoot at the trap range.

However, the market for SXS's seem very weak.
Anyone on this Forum recently get or think of getting a SXS shotgun?

I got a 12 gauge Merkel 147E at the end of last year but haven't really used it a lot. While pretty and very well made, I prefer the ruggedness and versatility of my trusted old Remington 870.

I've thought about getting a Stoeger Coach Gun. Haven't. Might get one someday, but not a high priority.

I set one up for the house about 18+ months ago.

With it's 11" tubes, it swings very nicely in tight places.

This one is a 12 Gauge, but I would not mind finding a 20 Gauge to do the same treatment to.

For clays I have my Valmet O/U

I currently have 4 SxS's and am ALWAYS looking for more. "Best" grade guns always bring several times more money than I want to spend, but good condition field guns are a real joy to shoot.

I have a great condition Sauer 20 gauge from the late 50's, that is so much fun to hunt with, but the chokes are a little tight for sporting clays without the expense of spreader ammo.

I also have a Youth/Ladies 20 gauge Trap gun from the 20's or 30's. Very short stock and choked full and fuller! It has become a Cowboy Action gun for the wife and D-I-L's.

With the larger frames of current Americans and the very thick clothing of older times, it is difficult to find a vintage SxS that fits even close for comfortable sport shooting. Buy I am always looking.

I'm sure fellow member Bill Bates will be along shortly with some photos of his beautiful doubles!

I shoot AYAs in 12 and 20 gauge, and my first shotgun was a Browning BSS in 20 gauge. I love my doubles and prefer side by sides for hunting, but not shooting at the range.

I have a few, Lefever Nitro Special in 16ga, I have two Brownings BSS in 12ga and 20ga, and I have 3 Winchester Consecutive Ser # Mod 23's in 20ga , 28ga and 410 bore. The one's I cherish shooting is the Win 410 and the Browning 20ga. The one I have a difficult time shooting, the Lefever, it has two triggers, every so often I put fingers on both triggers and both barrels go of together, that hurts.

I don't have any pictures of them, but I've owned several over the years. The first gun I ever purchased was a Sears/Roebuck 12 ga double (rebadged Stevens 311). My mother had to order it for me in those before GCA 68 days.

My next one also came from Sears, a 20 ga. AYA that Sears sold for a couple of years. One of the few guns I REALLY wish I'd kept.

I've also owned a couple of Parker Trogans in 12 ga., a LeFever 16, and a Hunter 20. Sold them all off during my "Personal Economic Downturn."

I still look at them once in a while, but I don't get out to shoot/hunt much these days, so I've been able to resist another one.

Haven't needed anything else in recent years.

The old Stevens 530A SxS 12 ga. (1953) with mid-barrel white bead forms that perfect figure eight with the muzzle white bead when shouldered quickly and usually drops the bird no matter what I'm wearing.

Waterfowl need a little more "reach" so the Ithaca 12 ga M-37 (1962) gets out there a little better and also use to be more than sufficient.

Haven't been out for ducks in a long time, but still enjoy both shotguns, and both were utility grade guns in their day, so never broke the bank either.

I did get a 12 Ga. Ugartechea SxS, choked Imp & Mod. It's not real expensive, but a very nice shooting gun when I feel like I need double triggers. I normally use Browning O/U and Trap guns for skeet & trap every week.

I have a couple buddies that have been shooting the CZ SxS's and really like them. The 20 Ga. in particular.

I would like to have a coach gun. My favorite is my model 1100 with an 18" barrel. That may change, however, as I just love the Model 870 Tac 14 I just got.

I recently inherited a Lefever 410 side by side from my stepfather. He recently passed and his daughter did not seem interested in any of his gun related stuff.

I am not sure of its value and I'm sure when compared with some of these "premium" and "collectable" A1 condition specimens showcased in this thread it really has almost no monetary value.

However..........to me it is priceless. I never really had the chance to become very close with my stepfather....he really was my mother's husband. That said, he was a very kind and gentle man who took great care of my mother. Due to distance and the point in ours lives we were in, he and I just never had much time to get to know each other. I will always be indebted to him for what he did for my mother and I really can't say enough good things about him.

It absolutely broke my heart that his daughter wanted to have nothing to do with the vast majority of his possessions. I have posted the Winchester Model 94 of his that I inherited as well. It bothered my that his daughter didn't even care about his WW II uniforms or medals/awards.

To me this side by side is priceless. It was unbearable to think that it would be sold off to a pawn shop or someone that would not appreciate it for what it had come to represent.

It holds a place in my safe beside his Winchester Model 94 and my father's Savage Model 99 and my father's Fox 16 gauge side by side. In my mind these guns are priceless because they belonged to two of the best men that have ever been on this earth.

That's a shame because the Merkel is well made, MUCH better balanced, and a lot nicer to carry and shoot than pump gun. Unless you use your guns fr corner posts or boat oars, just how "rugged" does it have to be to get used in the field?

I have a love hate thing going with side by sides. On the love side, they have a great nostalgic look and feel to them. Great balance too. Just beautiful! On the hate side, I NEVER could hit S@#! with any of them. Something about the sight picture of the two converging barrels just throws me off. Consequently, I'm now an over/under guy.
That said, I was recently smitten by the CZ ringneck in 28 ga in a LGS. I just may need to go back for another grope.....

Why are you looking at the barrels? Try looking at your target and NOT the barrels.............

I have a couple of old Browning BSS 20 gauge guns. The real, devoted double-gun guys sneer at them. I don't care. I like them and I can shoot them fairly well. I understand what the SxS snobs don't care for about them and I can see their point. I guess I'd like to have a really nice 20 gauge side-by-side some day that might improve on the Brownings a bit, but it's probably not going to happen. On the other hand, "Never say never!"

I've ended up with more doubles than I need.

Several small bore Parkers and LC Smiths, a number of English game guns, several SKB Ithicas and some others.

Love em all but don't need another

Is there some reason on your mind why I should not discuss my SxS shotgun in this thread?

I just spent a lot more time with an 870 Turkey Special and could not get used to the 147E to shoot it equally well. The versatility of RemChokes, and the ease to change barrels, is definitely something the 147E does not offer. I guess the SxS will make a good present for my son oldest son when he graduates.

I still have a 12 gauge Merkel 200E which I shoot better than the 147E and am more comfortable with.

I do not doubt that you have completed all the proper paperwork to make it legal. What caught my eye were the hammers. The only shotgun that I ever got good at trap with was a $99 Russian side by side (Bakali?) 12 gauge with hammers. It was of course cocked before I called pull. Speed getting on flushed birds was such a problem that I traded the gun for something else. After it was gone an old man told me that I should have carried it broken open with the hinge laid on my offside forearm and the hammers cocked. He found it faster to close the action than cock the hammers. It never occurred to try that. What's your plan to get yours into action?

I dearly love my BSS in 20 gauge, I still find it a great pointing gun, even if it is a boxlock with a single, non-selective trigger. Haters going to hate, but even without the sentimental value mine has, I would not sell it.

My experience with the 12 gauge BSS wasn't as nice, though. It didn't feel as good to me and I never shot it well. It almost seemed over-built and clunky.

Very interesting, it would have never occurred to me either

I just use it like you did, however I am going to try it hammers cocked, action open.

This is also a Russian Baikal, a model IZH-43K. They are imported and sold by EAA as the Bounty Hunter II. This one had it barrels crushed in the door of a safe during a robbery attempt. I bought the NIB (but damaged) firearm for $100 with the full intent of going the short barrel route.

Why ii" barrels?
Bag or case needs to be as long as the rear end/stock (13.5" maybe?)
I would have made the barrels equal in length to the rear end/stock

Initially, I was going to have a stock maker (I can't do woodwork) reduce the stock to a Bird's Head pistol grip. So I shortened the tubes to just past the front of the fore-end. I never liked the Ithaca Auto-Burglar style grip.

This image was what inspired me

However I liked the way it swung with the shoulder stock in place so I left it that way.

I picked up a Darne pattern 12 gauge about 11 years ago. Darnes have a sliding breach and I have always wanted one. It shoots much better than I do.

I bought a Savage Fox Model B a few months ago. It is a 12 gauge with 30" barrels. I need to get out and shoot it.

I have had a lot of above average doubles the last few years. 16g
guns were going cheap and 12s not much better. The small bores
still bringing a good dollar, and collector grade guns are too. The
shooter grade guns with honest wear are actually dropping in
price because of soft market for them. The doubles like Baker
Lefever, Ithaca, Fulton, ect are what I consider good doubles.
Mostly pre WW2 guns with the exception of Win 24 & Stevens
311. There are a lot of WW2 bring homes coming out of the
woodwork because vets heirs are selling off the stuff that their
uncle, ect, would never part with. I bought a cheap Brazilian
Kmart double awhile back, had it on the table for several shows.
No one even looked at it. Sawed it off to 181/2", reset sight and
dressed muzzel. Kicked the price from $150 to $200 and sold it
in a few hours.

Always liked the SxS shotgun. Have a Beretta 626 Onyx with 26" bbls and a 20 ga 311 for a foul weather gun. Prefer 2 triggers, the Beretta came cheap. Like the beaver tail forend and the vent rib plus choke tubes. Hunted with a Merkel model 8 for many years, nice gun. The CZ sidelock is an underrated quality gun.

There are some nice guns in this thread, hope they get a lot of time in the field being enjoyed. Larry

I have a Remngton Bakail, the preferred weapon of choice for Ash Williams. Bought it in 05/06 I believe.

Nothing fancy, just a working man's SXS

It is my go to quail gun.... speaking of that... it comes out of the safe next friday for it's annual quail slaying duties

I have a Turkish Yildiz side by side 20 gauge that I bought from Academy Sports for under $500 and I freaking love the gun. It weighs under six pounds, has 5 chokes, great trigger, and no autoamatic safety. It is an awesome bird gun I just wish it had two triggers because in Kansas during pheasant season we flush quail and turkeys also.

I have four of them. First one I bought is a Fulton Hunter's Special in 12 gauge, then I picked up Simpson Suhl (Merkel copy) in 16 gauge. it is my favorite. After that i restored an LC Smith 20 gauge. Lastly, i picked up a Spanish made 410. Including the restoration costs i have about $1500 in the lot. Tons of fun per $$.

I was really hesitant to cut the stock on mine, figuring I would mess it up. Eventually, I just went slow and everything worked out great. I am not a woodworker either, by any stretch of the imagination.

I cut the bulk, of the stock off with a saw, then started to slowly whittle the remaining stock into the shape I wanted. Once I got close enough that I was scared I'd take too much off with the knife, I switched to a coarse sandpaper and started the final shaping. This took a long time, because I stopped whittling with so much left on it. Once the shape was close, I switched to finer sandpapers.

I scuff the foregrip, the stained both to match and used a spray clear as the finish. I was very happy with the results.

I still have a Stevens 12 ga double barrel over the door in my shop.
I grew up shooting a 12 ga double with hammers.
Now days, I shoot a Browning auto in 20 ga.

By the way, that looks like a Bear MGC knife from the days when they were made with real India stag. It's classy without being expensive. Good luck next Friday.

I thought about it until I researched prices. I don't have a monkey that poops money so I bought a Benelli Super Sport instead.

Well, this thread WAS timely. Friday is quail opening day and I got her out of the safe, cleaned her and oiled her and she is ready for her 11th year of quail slaying duties on day one

Here are some photos of opening days gone by. All the quail were shot within walking distance of my home on the hill.

I can only hope this year is as bountiful

If you are fortunate enough to live in upland bird country(ringnecks, quail, grouse ect.) and you choose to hunt with SxS guns - more power to you! I would if I lived in such country. I like any quality SxS but then again I like to shoot Humpback Brownings also. I am down to 1 SxS, a browning 12 , as I gave my Fox Model B(stevens)20 to my brothers son. I like guns but because I am older I tend to lean toward guns that I used and saw used in my youth.

A few years back I did some trading with a retired Sheriff. I got
a Colt SxS hammer gun, twist barrels. This gun was the fanciest
American made gun of this type I ever saw. It was engraved with
picture of kid in knickers throwing targets for a shooter. Wood
was fantastic. Down side barrels had been hacked off Ilegal. I
looked for a set of barrels for several years and gave up and
traded it off to a Colt Collector. Last I herd he is still looking for
Barrels.

Opening morning wasn't as bountiful as some years past, but it was a wonderful morning and the SXS did it's job faithfully.

Will try a few new spots this weekend.
