Default Mosin at LGS, Spanish?

I do not know much about Mosin rifles. Stopped at LGS to have ffl transfer done and this was sitting in the rack. Identified as a 1891 Mosin Dragoon possibly from Spanish Civil War. What is the value of this rifle? How would one identify it as a SCW variant? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Try:
scwmosin.weebly.com website. "Comprehensive Guide to the Spanish Civil War Mosin". It gives some I.D. info.

I think the 1925 date on the receiver would make it a Dragoon. The rear sight too.

Most SCW rifles are marked "Made in URSS", a sad attempt to hide where they were coming from. I can't see that mark on the receiver flats, but the operative word is "most".

Could be Finnish. Does it have "SA" in a box anywhere?

While that looks like a wire sling hanger that could be from the SCW, it is not definitive... Regardless, you don't stumble across intact dragoons every day. I would value it at $325-$375, and would definitely buy at the lower end of that range. Any more than $375 and it would be overpriced. (Imperial dragoons are worth more, and sometimes hopeful sellers will price their 1920s dragoons at that level).

"URSS" are the initials for the "USSR" in Spanish, and commonly used in that language. Just as "OTAN" is "NATO" in French.

They weren't trying to hide anything, they were just spelling "USSR" in their own language.

By the date on the receiver I think it is a Dragoon. The rear sight looks like a Dragoon era sight also.

There are no USSR, URSS, or SA proof marks on it anywhere. From the site that Tndrfttom provided (thank you for the link), the early dates of dragon models were also sent to Spanish for use. It is also noted that early proof marks were not always present. The asking price is $350. The rifle is missing cleaning rod and rear wire hanger for the sling. Part numbers are mismatched, but probably not an uncommon occurrence. I do not remember any cartouches on the stock, but I will recheck. Would there be a difference in value between it being Russian Dragoon vs Russian Dragoon SCW? Thank you all for the responses.

I will research imperial Dragoon next. This rfile has the Izhevsk's crest and markings.

Another SCW stamp were 5 dots like you would see on dice

Hope that makes sense

The hanger doesn't look like a wire hanger. At least not the Spanish type. This looks more like a D and made to be a hanger. The Spanish ones were literally just pieces of thin metal bent into some sort of a shape. Often looking like they were done by hand. Like they took a wire clothes hanger and cut a piece of for the sling.

The price itself isn't bad. Today a 1944 M91/30 go for about $225. Anything Dragoon, ex Dragoon, Imperial, hex, Fin, M91, Balkan, SCW will go for more

Nice find anyway.

Some mosins were double dated. The date on the barrel if it has one could be after the refurb. If you remove the stock on the bottom of the receiver near the securing screw hole is the orginal date of manufacture.

I would pay up to $400 for that dragoon. Refurbs are selling for up to $300 so I wouldn't hesitate on that one

I would be a buyer at the asking price also. There are many Mosin Nagant collectors that have never run across a dragoon in original configuration like this one is... It may very well be the only one you will ever see for sale up close and in person. Try to get it for a little less, but grab it regardless.

I have an Izhevskh mfg, 1936 dated, "USSR" marked Spanish CW Mosin and was under the impression that many of the Mosins (but not necessarily all) sent to the Communists in Spain were 1936-37 mfg? Like others have said, while maybe not a Spanish CW gun, the price isn't bad these days.
