The Marines adopted this revolver in 1905 and issued 812 of them through 1909 when they switched to the Colt New Service in .45 Colt. Colt also produced 926 of these for the civilian market.

Mine is # 156!!!

Best,
Charles

Amazing condition considering how old it is. Did you get it at a fairly good price. Sorry about being nosey but just curious.

Serven's Colt book gives some information about them, and as is typical of Serven, not a great amount of detail is provided. He does say that there are both military and civilian versions of the 1905, and also that the civilian version was available nickel plated. He also says they were chambered in both .38 LC and .38 Special. I am not sure exactly what that means, as I don't know if all of them were chambered in .38 Special so the .38 LC could also be used, or whether some were chambered in .38 LC only and others (civilian?) in .38 Special.

.45 Colt and .45 Schofield ammunition can be used in a Colt M1909 revolver. But the official military round for the M1909 revolver was the .45 M1909, which is essentially the .45 Colt case with a larger diameter rim to ensure more reliability in fired case extraction. It was made only for military use and only by Frankford Arsenal.

Charles, what a great looking gun. Do you know if the civilian guns number after the military or were they intermingled?

They were made simultaneously. However, the guns were serial numbered in a different series from each other . The Marine guns were 1-812. The Commercial guns were 10,001-10,926.

Best,
Charles

I have no. 607. It's a .38 long colt. Or at least I always thought it was. Also mine has a square butt with smooth grips. Military inspector markings all over it including bottom of grips. Looks like R.A.C .
