Default Price check on Rossi .44 Special

Default

I found a Rossi Mdl 720 .44 Special but they want $495 bux for it. Blue book says $200 bux for 100%. The gun looks to be in very nice condition it's just the disparity between what he is asking and what the book says they are worth. I was thinking that I would have to pay some ware between $350 & $400 bux for one. What say you on the price ?

I saw one at the gun show last weekend priced at $350 IIRC. Probably could be had for around $325.
From everything I have seen, "the book" is so out of touch with real-world prices as to be just about worthless...

Blue Book is what gun stores use to low ball customers wanting to sell or trade guns.

I bought this one 3 years ago for $350. Gun is in excellent condition.
Conceals well with a pancake holster and accuracy is very good.
Very comfortable with the "Skeeter" load.

There are 2 different versions of the Model 720 - the "Covert model" and the one pictured by Capt. F. I have the Covert model, which has fixed sights, factory bobbed hammer and is DA only. The factory grips usually replaced with Pachmayr grips to make recoil a bit more manageable. Whatever you do, don't dry fire the piece as it has been known to cause the hammer to fracture and break. These revolvers are long out of production, and I bet replacement parts will be very difficult to find. They are a bit of a cult favorite, and I like mine, but $495.00 is extremely ambitious. I think I paid $300.00 for mine several years ago. If you really want it, and it checks out okay, I'd put $300.00 cash on the table and see if the buyer will bite.

Good luck,

Dave

I have been watching these (and looking for one, finally found). $375-425 seem to be the recent sales #s. The adj site guns seem to go for a little more. A fixed sight gun just went on GB for about $380.

Thank you all for your replies.
The revolver is the mdl 720 with the hammer and adjustable sights. $350 to $400 is what I would want to spend. The revolver was on Guns America but shows no longer available. I'll keep searching.

The "blue book'. Isn't worth the paper it's written on!!!!!!!!.....I agree with the others....$350-$400 if you really want it......The 720 preceeded the Smith 696 by about 2 years......I bought my 720(adj sights/non fluted cyl) when they were first announced.......Kept a round count to 740 rds to see if it would break......It didn't......I still have it and would be hard pressed to let it go for $400.......The later 720's came with a fluted cylinder...

Garbage, run away as fast as you can, $200 bucks is about all it's worth. I bought one from a guy I knew, but quickly got rid of it because it jammed when firing but ran smooth a silk when dry firing. Sold it and made a little money.

For the money you are willing to spend or less, you might want to check out a CA Bulldog.

I only have one Rossi - a 971 snubby in 357 magnum - but it is a very high quality revolver. It is of an older vintage though.
I view it just like the Ford/Chevy/Dodge debate. In my experience they've all made some peaches and they've all made some lemons....

I've heard more folks say they like the Rossi 720 than dislike it.
My reason for the Rossi is the 3.00 barrel. I like that length of barrel. Eventually I'll find what is right for me.

If the 3" barrel is a big selling point for you, and you are interested in it as a CCW then I will second the recommendation for a vintage CA Bulldog.

Mine is from the early 70's, and while it is not of S&W quality, it is a good solid revolver. Best of all it is LIGHT weight. Around 2/3 the weight of my Rossi 971 snub. It fits in some of my J-frame holsters too, and is a perfect fit in a holster for an SP101.

The SP101 might be comparable to the CA Bulldog in some ways, but weight isn't one of them. Those little Rugers are HEFTY.

I'm very pleased with my Interarms/Rossi M720. It appears to be a fair, but not exact, copy of the S&W 696. Mine has reliably and accurately put 1200+ rounds downrange in the six or so months I've owned it without any issues. Don't know if it's a $500 gun, but the $300 I paid for mine was worth every penny.

I bought mine earlier this year. I'd been interested in them and when one turned up at my LGS for $250 I jumped on it.
Mine is the covert model. 3" barrel, fixed sights, fluted cylinder, factory bobbed hammer.

I bought a brand new Charter Bulldog 44 special for under $400. I have had no problems with it and it is my main carry since buying it. I really don't care much for .38 spl or 357 now.
The trigger is decent and recoil is much less than a 357 for sure. I can shoot 100 rounds with no hand discomfort at all. That is with the stock grips.

I've only owned one Rossi revolver, a Model 88 (M60 clone) bought new nineteen years ago.

It was a very satisfactory little gun, not much below a Smith 60 for half the price. I liked it and trusted it enough that it was my EDC for a year, till I could afford a dashless 640.

No experience with the Rossi or Charter .44 Special boomers, but I'm certainly not going to label the Rossi products "garbage".

Could it be that the S&W 696 is a copy of the Rossi 720?

I know, I'm a heretic to be spreading such sacrilege...

My guess is that one is more like a Taurus than the Rossi 720. Academy put those on clearance a few years ago, sounds like you snagged one.

Your guess would be 100% correct. The Rossi 44 mag that Academy sold IS a Taurus - a Taurus 44C to be exact.
They even have the "44C" model number etched in the yoke cut.

The only thing different about them is the Rossi name etched on the side of the barrel and the red fiber-optic front sight.

I had one stolen out of my truck while I was cutting firewood only 30 yards away Christmas week.
They are a very good carry gun and accurate with adjustable sights. I change the rear sight out to a Millett sight.

I use a Bianchi 5BHL left hand holster and attach a metal belt clip to the back for IWB carry and right hand cross draw.

I bought a second one to replace the one stolen and both were about $400 IIRC. They do have a plastic front sight which was broken off on the one I recently bought. I think a Ruger front blade can be used to repair the missing front sight.

I know that this is an old thread, but many of us from time to time are researching these old Interarms Rossi 720 .44 Specials. I have read a number of times that they have plastic sights. Others have firmly denied that. I am currently looking to purchase one, so I took a magnet to the front and rear sights of a fluted 3" 720.. Definitely metal.

I have to wonder if this plastic sight comment applies to a Taurus or newer, non Interarms Rossi.

The one I'm looking at is tagged $399.99 Wish me luck, I'm going to ask him if he would polish up the inside a bit for that price.

I just stumbled on to this thread and had to make a comment for those that may drop by.

I pulled my M720 .44SPL Rossi out of my headboard today. Its my trusted bedroom defender. Loaded with Hornady Critical Defense 185gr.

I purchased this new in 91. Its a non-fluted cylinder, as all the early 720's were. The fluted ones came after 96. They were of lesser quality and built by a different company.

This gun has fired less than 200 rounds of ammo in its life. The first box did jam on the rotation. I discovered the casing wasn't crimped. This caused the lead to slip forward out of the cylinder and jam the rotation. I tossed those and now keep a close eye on the ammo I buy.

Out of all the .44SPL I have shot I would say the only one comparable is the Smith 696. The CA is a cheaper quality frame, and the Taurus felt like a rattle trap. Although all three are fluted. You wouldn't catch me shooting hotter loads through either of them. I like the strength of the thicker walls on the non-fluted cylinder.

If you want a great .44SPL in a small frame Look for an early model M720. You wont regret it.

I’m 100% in agreement. A single round of Buffalo Bore 44 Special blew the ejector rod loose in my Charter Arms Bulldog. My Rossi handles it with ease. It’s a bit on the heavy side for comfortable IWB carry but the three inch barrel is a big plus.

I thought I read somewhere that BB listed the Bulldog as one gun NOT to shoot their hot loads through?

Yes, it’s on their website and many other places in the ‘inter-world’.
Stick to standard loads in the Bulldog.
There’s a small price to pay for that lightness.

Griz- I sold two 720s in 2018 (one da only, one sa/da) they both went for around $400, so the $399 asking price seems about right.

Well there ya' go.
Pretty important to follow manufacturers recommendations when it comes to guns and ammo.

Personally I don't see the need to hot-rod the 44 special for defensive purposes. At standard pressures and velocities the rounds may not expand, but they're already as big as most expanded 9mm/38spl rounds and have a lot more mass and penetration. They do plenty of damage, especially with the sharp edges of a HP or RNFP bullet.

Before I say anything else, can anyone recommend which speedloader to use?

We paid $350 for our Rossi 720 before all the madness set in. That being said, it is a great defensive revolver with a DAO trigger in .44SPL, which is a nice chunk of lead to throw if you have only 5 rounds.

I have included pics with the stock and aftermarket grips.

The speedloader you need is an HKS CA 44 5 shot...

As I have stated before . And you can research it. The Rossi 720 is NOT a copy of anything. It came out almost 3 YEARS before the 696. And if you look at my pictures above you can see it's smaller too.

I had always wanted one of the Rossi 720’s. Then decided to wait a year and pinch my pennies and just get the S&W 696 no dash. Zero complaints. It is a much better gun than either the Rossi or Charter Arms.
If you have any concerns about quality, save your pennies for a while and just get the best version of the three. You will never regret it. Just remember, none of the three are made to shoot hot, sort of hot or Keith rounds out of. Even a limited diet of them.

I'm still here and .44 spc guys who like these smaller/shorter models probably come back to this thread from time to time. I passed on the 720 with the fluted cyl and adj sights. It wasn't easy though. It was the weight that kept me from buying it for everyday edc. If I was younger (73) and still out and about on the farm and in the woods more I wouldn't have hesitated. It would have been a great dual purpose handgun in a great caliber. Instead I went for something lighter and found a deal on a 3" Bulldog from the early '80s with a Mernicle holster and about 5 boxes of ammo on GB. Still spent $400 but the extras were nice. Problem was it shot left and made 3 trips back to CA before they rebarreled it and polished and reblued it. I'm very happy with it and do carry it often. Surprisingly, the seller split the $49.95 cost CA charges for repairing the older guns as well as the 2 shipping charges. CA picked up the 2nd.

But I have to admit there is still a soft spot for the 720 even if more for the range and occasional edc. The 696 though does have the look and the smoothness over all three but much more weight too.

I just picked up a Taurus 445 stainless in 44 special. I didn't really need another one but it was in great shape and priced too low to pass up.

First of all blue book values aren't worth the paper they written on. Early Rossi 720(unfluted cylinder) and S&W 696. The Rossi preceeded the 696 by several years( and is a fine revolver)........I Know....Old post.
My 696 no-. has FP on hammer and hammer & trigger are forged.
