What Do I Have Here?
I acquired this Winchester 1892 in 25-20 and figured it was new production. The serial number indicates it was made in 1901. Has anyone seen any newer production models or repros like this? It looks brand new or like some kind of custom shop job.

I've seen guns that look like this, ie. a new production 1892 in .45 Colt and other calibers but never 25-20. I think someone took an old receiver and barrel, refinished it and added a new high grade stock. Or maybe just added the barrel since the action is like new.

Thanks, not sure who did it. MAYBE Jeff Flannery, but I'm not sure.

I would agree that it is an original 1892 which has been customized with engraving and new wood.

Walt, do you think that eliminates the fact that it's an old 1892 for pricing purposes and turns it into a "custom" gun? I have no idea what it's worth. Pretty much whatever the market bears but I think with all of the fancification, its value as an original 1892 is gone.

Well, it certainly is not what I am accustomed to seeing for a 1901 mfgrd 1892. That said, it is a beautiful example of some very skilled craftsmanship involving some high grade refinishing work, engraving and inlays. Beautiful rifle.

If I acquired such a gun, l would proudly hang it over the mantle as a the perfect wall hanger......and take it out periodically to run a magazine or two of 25-20s through it; clean it well and put it back up on the wall. In my opinion, all guns are made to be shot and enjoyed. You have a great piece there!

Thanks, that's the plan if I don't sell it. There are several other 25-20's in the collection I may grab instead to hang and shoot.
