Default My Sister the Granny and a Hi-Point Carbine....

My Sister "Cathy" came to stay with us a few weeks ago when Hurricane Irma came through Florida and took a swipe at her house. She enjoyed visiting Southwest Virginia, and took in all the activities available, including shooting.

Cathy did a hitch in the Marines in the late 70's, so she is familiar with firearms, knows the safety rules and markmanship fundamentals, but had not shot any firearms since leaving the Corp. She had a blast shooting my Hi-Point Carbine (9MM caliber), Remington 870, Glock 17 pistol and a Ruger Blackhawk in .357 caliber.

The gun she enjoyed the most though was the Hi-Point Carbine. Took only a few rounds to familiarize herself with it and she was slaying steel targets at 50 yards. We probably went through 200 rounds in an hour. Here's some pics:

Sitting position, 50 yards:

Shooting results, hard to see but there is a nice group at the edge of the black, probably 15 rounds:

A very happy shooter displaying results of hits on the steel rabbit from Hi-Point and shotgun:

So anyway, she's back home in Florida now, called me yesterday to say she had bought a Hi-point 9MM carbine and a Ruger LCP .380 pistol, and has applied for a concealed carry permit. Today she is taking her 14 year old Grandson to the range to shoot the carbine....

It wasn't a hard sell to get her back into shooting....

I really have to wonder about her being all bundled up in SW Virginia. Here in Michigan I'm hitting the street at 4:30 AM in shorts and a T shirt for my morning run. Cannot believe it's October 8 and temps at 6:00 AM are nearly in the mid 60's.

As for the Hipoint Carbine, 9mm and anything more than 4 lbs. adds up to recoil about as soft as a 22LR so what's not to like. Another plus is that it's handy and the longer barrel can produce Magnum velocities out of what might be considered "weak" range fodder. Can't blame her a bit for enjoying it.

I thought the same thing, but she is a grandmother from Florida so anything under 75 degrees is "crisp" weather. I love the piano key gloves.

Real nice you got her "back into the shooting sports". We should all either introduce others or get previous shooters back into it, especially women and children. In my experience if you introduce a guy you gain 1 shooter, if you introduce a woman or child, you gain a whole family. It's all about getting more shooters.
That's the reason why I train youths in the NRA Basic Rifle Course and follow it with the Winchester/NRA Markmanship Qualification Course where they hone their skills. In recent years we have had one female who took the course and has progressed to do quite well in the Nationals at Camp Perry. We now have another (female) who plans to go to Camp Perry Nationals next year. Somehow it seems even though only about 20% who take the training and get certified, at this point the only ones who have gone to the nationals or plan to are girls.
I guess it's because the girls focus on shooting but at a point in rifle training the guys "discover girls" and they frequently forget about honing their shooting skills, focusing only on the girls.

Great post and smile. :-) I thought about the coat also, then I remembered my friends in South Florida that think anything under 70 degrees is cold.

Have a blessed day,

Leon

Default After my own heart.........

Glad you introduced her to 'shooting for fun'. I'm a carbine guy myself. I think they are the funnest things to shoot.

And add another civilian to the pool of shooters in this country. I think that if a lot of people just TRIED it, under good conditions like you have, many more people would learn to enjoy it.

I have a Hi-Point 4595-TS carbine, and I love shooting it. It's not a high power or long range carbine, but close in, it's a tack driver. Mine has never had a malfunction of any kind, and the recommended cleaning schedule is barrel every 500 rounds or so, and detailed clean every 1500-2000 rounds. Plus they'll eat any kind of ammo you feed them; clean, dirty, brass, steel, you name it.

Awesome story and great pictures!

I've got a Hi-Point 9mm carbine and love it. I went to many years scoffing at them before I actually shot one...then had to have one.

Too many pics I see of women shooting look awkward, like the woman is scared to get too close to the gun. Your sis is settled right into the gun, like it was part of her. She's still a Marine.
Congratulations - you have a shooter!
Glad she liked it and all is well with your family.
