Have to ask Roy. Looks to be a built up bullseye gun with a Bomar rib. I note the ejection port was not lowered and relieved, so I'm not sure just how talented the gunsmith was that built it. Like the man said, buy the gun, not the story.

Turns out it 100% authentic, something Roy Jinks had done.

What is the story behind it? It looks to be a 1911 with a Smith & Wesson roll mark from an era before S&W got into making 1911s. Did it start life as something else? It also looks like the roll mark has the old style ampersand, and an old "N" serial number.

Looks like they applied that S&W rollmark with much vigor. Interesting 1911.

Interesting gun. I saw a lot of those when many years ago, I was shooting in Bullseye events. I fully agree with H Richard in the fact that ejection port is usually relieved for total reliability. The fact Roy Jinks was involved would have no part in my personal valuation regarding the purchase price.

Well, Smith certainly didn't tool-up to make one 1911 slide and one 1911 frame, even if the gun was being built for Roy Jinks.
So where did those parts come from? Perhaps one of the Federal arsenals (e.g., Rock Island), friends at the AMU at Ft. Benning, the Bullseye Fairy's secret stash?
I still have the strange sense that something is not right in the Universe when I see a 1911 emblazoned with Smith and Wesson markings. I shot a heavyslide like this for a while in competition, and I will say that they are soft-shooting pistols, for sure.

About a 1913/1914 Colt 1911 Govt frame. Not sure about the slide, could easily be an early orig with the markings wiped. Then someone in the shop played with the rollmarking machine.
Those 1911's were pretty cheap at one time,,even in the late 60's early 70's you could still buy a decent one for $50.
Lots of BE guns made up on GI 45's
