Default What revolver or Semi auto, you own people hate?

What name brand revolvers or semi auto pistols you own now that always get negative comments when you post them here on this forum? I made the mistake of asking about Taurus a while back, and it seem no one here liked the Taurus. Just curious.

Your right. Seems to be a lot of hate for Taurus. As an instructor I have seen a lot of issues with Taurus semi-auto pistols, but I think their revolvers are ok. At least the ones I have had experience with. I use this Taurus model 94 to help new shooters get started. The model 94 is on the right. Model 85 on left.

Steyr M9 attracts some sneers from those who read a Shotgun News article on the M40 version. The early M40s had extraction issues, but the 9mm model was OK. But telling some this is bothering them with facts, and you know how popular that can be.

Ruger Standard, MK I, MK II, and MK III. Owners like them because they're rugged, reliable, and great plinkers. Eventually, however, you have to field strip and reassemble them. That's where the hate starts. Fortunately, you don't have to do that very often.

I don't own a Hi-Point hand gun, but I think they are more disparaged than Taurus.

My Smith 659. Nobody likes it's elephant ears rear sight or it's square trigger guard. I love the gun because it is mine. Kind of like an ugly child. It's a tank and if I run out of ammo and it becomes hand to hand combat I can cut them with the ears and poke their eyes out with the trigger guard.

Just no love for the second generation. You know, like being the middle child. Your'e not the first born nor the baby.

I own some Hi-points, I don't even need to post on them to read a bunch of put downs. If you watch the videos and go over them, you will find them reliable and accurate. They are heavy and have terrible triggers, they are stupid to take apart and the mags are cheap. They arnt perfect but they arnt garbage either.

Beretta Model 92. Don't know that folks hate them but always seems folks love them or have a lot of negative to say about them. "Too big for a 9mm, grips too big, bad DA trigger, weak slides that can break, dont like decocker safety, etc."

I have a 1985 92F made in Italy. Fit and finish-excellent. Action is smooth as silk, very accurate. IMO the "Ferrari of semi automatics.

I think those that have negative to say either have never shot one or had bad experience with worn out ones in military.

I have 3 Tauri (Tauruses?) and 1 is the most denigrated of all. A Taurus Judge.
I had a SS 3" chambered model that I sold off. While I liked the gun, the overly long cylinder seemed cartoonish to me. I sold that one but regretted it and luckily for me I found a SS 2 1/2" cyl. version. So I guess that makes doubly stupid if you believe some of the "experts".
One of the others is a 445UL in .44 SPL. Dead nuts reliable. A stout little handful to shoot but I like it better than my CA Bulldog in the same caliber.
The last is a 92AFS. I haven't shot it yet so I can't offer up much of a review.
Just so you don't think I'm a bottom feeder, that only buys lesser quality arms I also have around 30 S&Ws.
I roll the dice and buy what I like. I haven't got a stinker yet.

You know, I'd have one of those too...if I could find a nice one. The 2nd Gens just weren't being marketed all that long and I don't often see them. I've seen a few 645s but they have always been pretty beat up. My only 2nd Gen is a 745 which is kind of an odd duck in its own right.

Taurus 455 , 45 acp , 5 shot, snub nosed , 2" ported barrel.
It's scary accurate, all the revolvers tolerances , chamber, throat, forcing cone and barrel are exactly right for accuracy. It groups to the fixed sights. Locks up tight and has min. barrel gap.
Can't talk about it much here....But I Love this pocket full of firepower !

I own a handful of Glocks. God forbid I mention them here or the Glock bashers will start in with their nonsense about the grip angle, or the blocky feel, or the fact that being so reliable doesn’t give you a chance to practice clearing malfunctions.

I bought a Taurus 94 in the early 90s. If it wasn't for the 94 I would have bought their Tracker instead of my S&W 69 when I was looking for a compact 44. Aside from the stiff DA trigger pull 22 revolvers have it shot OK but had to go back to the factory twice. First for a timing issue where it would bind up in single action. After that the barrel started twisting in the frame so badly the sights could not be lined up. Taurus fixed both problems but I sold the gun and have never bought another Taurus.

Rarely seen in W. Pa. gun shops new and when found used (more often than not barely used or anib) ....... they are offered at prices too cheap to leave behind....... what's a guy to do?????

So I buy them .......................

I've owned several. A Kel-Tec P-11, a High Point C-9, a SC9VE (I think that was the designation), a half-dozen or so Taurus revolvers, a Rossi revolver, Charter Arms revolvers and a Colt Python (not worth the money, a Smith is better, etc.).

Most of the comments on these are related to the colors more than anything else really.

My Ruger LCR, pretty much my EDC.

And a High Standard Sentinel R-101 in Pink.

My Ruger P90 .45 auto.

This pistol is, in my opinion, the best DA/SA .45 automatic ever produced.

It is super reliable, it lasts forever, and is the same dimensions as the vaunted SIG P220 (only stronger).

There was a gun writer back in the 90's who wrote a book about .45 automatics. His research entailed visiting rental gun ranges around the country that kept records about round counts and parts breakage. He gathered all the data, compared all the .45 automatics, and found that the Ruger P90 was, by a huge margin, the .45 pistol that had the most rounds through it with the least amount of parts breakage. The gun writer concluded that the Ruger P90 is not only the best .45 auto you could buy, but *the best handgun you could buy*.

There are other gun writers who wrote similar things about the homely P90. My own experience confirms these endorsements. I love my P90, even though folks turn their noses up at Ruger's auto loaders.

Those who complain about field stripping the Ruger MK's are often times two thumped folks who don't have much mechanical inclination anyway, or are new to the shooting discipline and don't know any better, or have not had the opportunity to be shown how it's done properly. I'm not saying they're easy, but they are easily mastered with a minimum amount of effort.

Both of my sons were field stripping and reassembling my MKII's by the time they were 7 or 8 years old. I taught my daughter-in-law how to do her MKIII without a whimper.

I mused that not everything in life is as simple as a McDonald's drive thru, but just because it's not simple does not automatically mean it's hard. All I'm saying is all the complaining and gnashing of teeth about Ruger Mk's seems to me to be out of proportion.

*********

I'm not a fan of Beretta 92's. I was issued a brand new one to carry for a couple of years and hated it. Was never so glad when we transitioned to Glocks, but ain't it great living in America where we can have differing opinions.

Lots of people hate on Kel-Tecs. I own several. P11, P3AT, PMR 30, Sub 2000 Gen 2, PF-9. Mine have been reliable and I have experience no difficulties. I especially like the PMR 30 and the Sub 2000.

The first revolver I bought when I turned 21 was a Taurus 66SS6. It was a good value and at the time it was what I could afford.

The first time I shot the thing it locked up and I was able to free it by messing with the key lock on the hammer. After that I never had any other issues. Fired thousands of rounds through it and eventually it loosened up pretty good and I sold it off. I still have a model 941 22 mag 4". The transfer bar broke on it once so far.

And I do own exactly one Glock. It's not a carry gun either

The hate starts because they don't disassemble them often enough to remember how the hammer and strut have to be manipulated for it to go together right. If they'd just do it on a regular basis, rather than once every couple years, they'd find it isn't hard at all.

If you ask most local gun shops what firearm brand is returned the most due to warranty issues, they'll immediately say "Taurus".

What that means is that Taurus's quality assurance procedures are lacking a bit - to the point that the QA process largely rests with the local gun shop (who should thoroughly inspect all the firearms they get in before they sell them), and the customers, who should know the basics about how to inspect a pistol or revolver.

On the other hand, if you get a good one with no problems, they are fine pistols and revolvers - and that happens far more often than not.

One of the realities of the internet is that when someone has a problem with something they are far more likely to go on-line and complain about than someone who didn't have a problem. The irony of course is that the small percentage of unsatisfied owners who complain on line, then creates the image that all Taurus firearms are bad, rather than just a small percentage.

That isn't the case, but when you say that, or when you post that you actually "like" a Taurus , you'll run into a veritable wall of hate - mostly from people who have never actually owned or shot one.

Default The Beretta 92fs is too large

It is a crying shame that gun is not compact like a K frame service revolver.

Around here, a person can hardly give away a DAO pistol. I like the nine I own. My Seecamp .32 a.c.p. and Sig P250sc .40 S&W are attached to me daily.

I own an Umarex/Walther PPK/S .22 LR. It's a pistol that nearly everyone loves to hate.

The thing is, I also own one of the original Walther made PPs in .22 LR, and I actually prefer to shoot the new 'pot metal' Umarex/Walther PPK/S .22 LR.

It's just as accurate, just as reliable (and not limited to 8 rounds to get that reliability as is the case with my PP) and just as much fun to shoot.

I've also noted that I'm not alone in terms of actually liking it, at least among shooters who actually own one. Most of the hate seems to come from people who "know guy who had one", and have never owned or even shot one themselves.

It also of course gets dumped on my purists - both in terms of PP series pistol collectors, and pretty much anyone who regards Zamak alloy as "pot metal". Pot metal had problems in firearms because of the impurities in the zinc alloy that caused dimensional instability. That's not an issue with Zamak where high purity is a priority. It's also a very good use of the metal from an engineering standpoint and it uses steel where steel is needed. But that doesn't matter to a purist.

Walther L 66A1 (Walther made, West German military proofed British army version of the Walther PP in .22 LR) and a Umarex Walther PPK/S .22 LR.

I don't like the Beretta 92 either. It's a fine pistol, but the grip and trigger reach are just too large for my hand.

I'm not a big fan of the Glock either though, for three reasons:

1) The older gens have a grip shape that feels like a 2x4.

2) I am not a fan of all the safeties being tied to the trigger;
a)It's fine for duty use in a suitable OWB holster;
b) It's a problem in an IWB holster for concealed carry, unless the holster has a clip the holster can easily be removed to re-holster the pistol out in front of the user where he or she can visually confirm nothing is obstructing the trigger; and
c) It's a sign of pure stupidity when someone is carrying it IWB with a clip on the slide.

3) The triggers generally have all the charm and feel of a Craftsman staple gun.

FEG pistols are not exactly hated, but they are frequently looked down upon.

The FEG P9 pistols, in their polished commercial form are excellent pistols, and they'll sell for 1/2 to 1/3rd the price of a Browning Hi Power in similar finish and condition.

The FEG PP series clones are another example. The finish on the pistols varied based on the specifications requested by the importer, but the Interarms imported FEG AP_S and APK_S series pistols are as nicely finished as their PP series counterparts from Walther, Manuhrin or Ranger, are nearly as accurate and are on average more reliable as they much less finicky when it comes to ammunition. They sell for about half what a PP series pistol sells for in comparable condition.

And Kimber 1911s.

Some folks just love to hate Kimbers and their Schwartz, grip safety activated firing pin safety.

Most of that comes from complaints that it can break, and all of that comes from people who don understand how it actually works and attempt to bash the slide onto the frame while depressing the grip safety - like they do with a GI, Series 70, or Series 80 1911. Eventually the abused parts break and they blame Kimber for their inability to a) read an instruction manual, or b) figure out why that little pin stick up out of the frame and obstructs the slide in the first place.

Don't really own anything currently that I have a strong distaste for.
When working at a couple of different LGS's, yes, many Taurus' came back for warranty/QC issues. But - believe the record was broken shortly later when the shops began selling the SCCY semi auto pistols.
Eventually, they had to stop selling and stocking SCCY. Continual problems with FTF, FTE, about every malfunction in the book.
Shipping back for work was futile, as they generally came back exactly as they left.

I do own one Taurus - the PT92 9mm, sort of a Beretta clone, except has the frame mounted safety. Bought cheap, has worked great for classes. Never an issue.
Just an inexpensive copy of the 'World's Largest 9mm', works well for it's 'purchased purpose' and does bedside duty.

Default IT MIGHT BE A LONG LIST.

Hi my name is NG and I have owned Glocks. A hybraported 3" 357 revolver that was LOUD and broke the overhead lights at an indoor range wasn't too popular. You might add Raven,Sterling,Kel-tec to the list. Plenty of hate to go around. I really find it hard to get all worked up over a gun that aint mine.

I have a SCCY CPX2. The fact that they are still in business completely amazes me.

I just don't get the "hate" thing. While some things aren't to my liking, I don't ever scorn another person's guns. Didn't y'all learn you never disparage 1) A man's wife, 2) his vehicle or 3) his guns?

I've got you all beat. I own a RAVEN 25 AUTO!
Yep, the original poster child of Saturday Night Specials. Cheap, pot metal, piece of junk. Or at least that's what most people think of them.
They are indeed cheaply made and not particularly accurate. But the fact is that the darn things work! They go bang every time and never, ever jam.

Mine is EDC a Kel-Tec PF-9. What attracted me to it was it's size, weight and it's locked breech design. Thought it would turn out to be waste of money, I was dead wrong. Never malfunctioned with FMJ or HP's with pretty fair accuracy, in a pocket holster one could forget it's there.

I have two possibilities to nominate:

1. Colt 25 acps=I have 3 vestpockets and one junior and carry one sometimes for runs to the store, etc. Would never use it but at arms length but.........

2. A Glock 27 converted to 357 Sig. Besides the usual Glock tirades/tantrums (yes, including UGLINESS), I hear all kinds of myths about the caliber (costly, hard to find, "bark", it "bites the hand")==none of which I find true.

True. I bought a PM9 back in the 90's when they were about the only choice in the market for a 'tiny 9' and am still using it for Summer carry. I live in shorts and t-shirts from May-Oct, and in a saltwater environment. The PM9 is still going strong and has only gotten smoother.

I have a Beretta 92FS. While I've never been disparaged when posting about it here, I do see a lot of negative comments, usually due to the size/weight, specifically in relation to caliber and/or capacity, closely followed by the safety/decocker.

What I've always found unusual is that despite having hands that fall somewhere between a small and medium glove size, I've shot it better than just about any other gun I've tried, including custom-tuned 1911s with trigger jobs (and yes, that includes the DA first shot).

To be fair, the difficult part to conceal is the grip, and the grip frame on the K-frame revolver is much slimmer than the 92's. At one point I had a Glock 23 and a 3" 65, and Milt Sparks Summer Special II holsters for each. The 65 was easier to conceal because of the difference in the grip frames. Plus the rear of the Glock's slide tended to stick out, while the upper-rear portion of my 65, with it's bobbed hammer, disappeared under a shirt. So size alone doesn't determine how well a gun can be concealed. The gun's shape, as well as the carrier's body shape, wardrobe, and method of carry, influence concealability as well.

A Beretta 92 can be carried concealed, but it's going to take a little more commitment and forethought. While my 92 serves a HD role, I haven't ruled out carrying it at some point...I just need to find the right gear.

FWIW, the Kahr P9 is on a very short list of single-stack 9mms that interest me.

Gotta be Taurus. I have owned a few and still do, and they have all been just fine.
But some people go so far as to put disparaging remarks about them in their signature line.

Never seen THAT much hate for any other brand - here or anywhere else....

Everybody has something to say about at least one gun out there.

All I can say is that if any one of these were pointed at me I would not laugh at it.

I used to have a Grendel P-30. By far the ugliest gun ever made. Once you shot it, you loved it though.

We own three SNS, all of them are fun to shoot. They all run reliably, and did so from out of the box. Seems their extra weight from using Zamac makes recoil seem mild.
