Any idea what the heck this is?
Blade aficionados, I need your help: While cleaning out a junk box of mine today, I came across this cutter of sorts, and I can’t figure out what it is. I’ve had it for a few years now, IIRC, a friend of mine confiscated it off a high school student years ago, and then had given it to me sometime in the last five years. Anyway, it would appear to be nickel plated brass with a steel blade either cast or fit into the frame. The steel blade also makes up one half of the hinge assembly as well. The only markings on it are “Ajani” (I think), the number 43, and a symbol of a sword or knife as can be seen in the photo. Whatever this is, it appears hand-made, and fairly old. Any ideas?

Thanks for the answers guys, I did do some Google searching this morning and didn’t find anything other than ads for Magic the Gathering cards and other stuff, no mention of a Madan Betel Nut cutters . So thanks again, I guess next time I’ll just have to dig harder, or ask on a different forum.

I was going to guess some type of nutcracker, but why it needed a sharpened blade was the question. Guess those betel nuts have hard shells. Not much of a weapon unless a turtle attacks you .

Good job putting idle speculation to rest. My first thought was something like a nutcracker. Next, I thought of the mohel. Good thing somebody came up with a quick answer. Who knows what ideas a guy might have one up with.

In defense of the OP: Google or Yahoo really depend a lot on how the query is worded!

Absolutely! Sometimes having another set of eyes and a fresh perspective makes all the difference.

True - I learned long ago how to 'cut to the chase' with proper wording and punctuation with Google.

Grandpa used to use something like that to cut the nuts off ram lambs. I guess that would make it a nut cracker of sorts???

Any idea what the heck this is?
So fun fact in case anybody wants to know: Betel Nuts are the number one cause of oral cancer in the Philippines where it is consumed as a stimulant much like we consume coffee and energy drinks here in the West. Apparently, many foremen will provide their labor crews with them to help the crew work faster and longer.
So, due to the risk of oral cancer, I will not be using this Betel Nut cutter for its intended purpose ever. It is a curious thing with such a specific purpose that would make its way to New England though...

I think it was confiscated as a potential weapon and not being used for its intended purpose. As I found out last week, Betel Nuts are carcinogenic, so I’m not sure you could even find them in the US let alone here in CT, but then again, I haven’t gone looking for them either. There’s a short documentary on YouTube about them if anyone’s interested, and it would seem, from watching the documentary, that the consumption of Betel Nuts is largely confined to the Philippines, or Southeast Asia, and is on the decline due to health risks.
But I’m no expert...
