Default Anyone else a U.S. Military Firearm Collector?

I am an avid S&W collector/accumulator but I also enjoy picking up U.S. Military guns when I come across good ones. Although it's getting harder and harder to find them at local gun shops and shows. Most of them have started turning up on the internet sights.

That said, I have found some dandy guns over the years. I suppose my prize find for S&W U.S. Military has been my 1st Model US Schofield.

As for non S&W military guns, my Springfield saddle ring carbine and Krag SRC would be among my favorites.

I have a few 1911 and 1911A1's around and several S&W US marked HE's
Rifles and Carbines include Trap-Doors, Krag's, 1903, 1917, 1903-A3 M1 Garand, M1 .30 Carbine, Civilian M1-A and a few others I am forgetting.

Tom......you bet!

I have sold a bunch (pre-retirement move cleanout at bosses orders) but still own (and love to shoot, handle, clean and wonder about their stories) a few:

Garand IHC 1966 Red River Army Depot Nat Match rebuild
S&W 1st Model 1899 US Army - .38 S&W Mil
Ithaca 1943 M1911A1
S&W -1942 Victory - US Navy still need original style stocks
Argentine 1945 M911A1 - systema Colt

Next post the sold ones (that I miss very much...but can't ley go of any S&W....so something had to go).

Love those military arms........never had a Krag, but wish I did cause it would be the only one I never shot, and would be (wife listening I hope) the perfect safe partner for my 1st Model Army 1899!

As stated above............the military ones gone from my safe to newer homes where I trust they will be appreciated for their history and workmanship.

Remington 1943 Model 1903-A3
Colt 1944 Model 1911A1
Remington Rand 1943 Model 1911A1
41 byf (Mauser) "Black Widow" P-08 Luger

Loved them all......kudo's to the younger guys and gals that keep the military arms collecting going......our country owes a lot to these arms and of course the service men and women that carried them on duty anywhere....anytime.

I wouldn't exactly say I'm a collector of them, but there are certain U.S. arms that I do really like and own.
I have:
1942 Springfield M1 Garand
1955 HRA M1 Garand
Inland M1 Carbine
Standard products M1 Carbine
1914 Colt 1911 Arsenal rebuilt during WW II
Smith & Wesson Victory Model .38 Special

Here are a few of them:

Hmmmm, does a 1917 Smith, Ithaca 1911A1, Springfield M1 Garand, (13) M1 carbines, (5)) S&W Victory models and an M3 Greasegun, in a pear tree, qualify me? If so, then yes, I guess I am!

One of these days I'm gonna have to get them all together for a group photo!

I did do surplus military guns from other countries around the world. When they were dirt cheap. Smelling the cocmoline was a high for me lol. The American made stuff was over priced back then too. My German 98k Mauser was $79. My Finnish m39 mosins was $89. Decades, many decades ago.

I've picked up a few over the last couple of years to go along with my other passion, collecting WWII items, US and German. Here's two of my three M1 Garands, the top being a 1955 Springfield Greek return in 2009, all original. The bottom is a 1945 Springfield.

And my 1916 DWM Luger, all matching numbers. Stamped 2.M.G.R.158, which is the 2nd Machine Gun Company, Regiment No. 158. They were part of the Imperial German element that invaded Belgium fighting in both Champagne and Artois prior to its transfer to the 50th Infantry Division. After joining the 50th, the 158th fought in Verdun-Vaux, Argonne, Aisne, St. Quentin, Aisne, Rheims, Meuse and was in the Meuse area at the Armistice.

And lastly, my all matching original finish 1943 Ithaca 1911A1.

U. S. military arms was the first gun collecting tangent I went down. Many of the rifles I've had since before I turned 20 and that wasn't just the other day.

I need to take new photos as these have been shown before ... and before that too.

In no particular order but just as they turn up in photobucket albums.

The "imposters," civilian legal versions.

This ought to be amended in order to provide a little description. Top to bottom:

Model 1922AII
Colt Model 1911
Springfield Armory M1
Underwood M1 Carbine
Smith & Wesson "Victory Model"
Colt Commando
Model 1894 Krag Jorgensen
Eddystone Model 1917 Enfield
Rock Island Arsenal Model 1903
Smith Corona Model 1903-A3
Colt Model 1901
Springfield Model 1884
Model 1917 Smith & Wesson
Model 1917 Colt
Remington Rand Model 1911-A1
Colt Model 1909

Springfield Armory M1A
Colt SP-1 AR 15

Yes, I've accumulated a few:

1816 Harpers Ferry musket, lock marked 1823 with an arsenal conversion to percussion and rifling. Unfortunately about a foot was cut from the barrel and stock sometime before my Dad found it in the late 1940s.
1873 Trapdoor traced to an Iowa regiment raised for the Spanish American War.
1917 Eddystone. My son and I restocked it back to military configuration
1943 Inland M1 Carbine
1955 HRA Garland with an almost new 1955 barrel
Late 1970s Colt AR demil kit assembled with a new Israeli contract overrun Colt barrel.
M1917 Smith and Wesson revolver.

No cheating Jeff! That Luger's not U.S. Military, but I LIKE IT!

Now, if we're dropping the U.S. part, I've got a few others I can add to my list.

Default A couple I have on the way....

A buddy has these two that I have agreed to purchase. The 1911 has a WWII slide on it but will make a good "Shooter" or parts gun. The 1911A1 is a full Rem-Rand from 1942-43 and seems to be in fantastic shape. We'll see when they arrive.

Default Group photo......

Thought I would take the boys out of the safe and oil them up......here's a grouping of 1911's and 1911A1's.

These guns just feel good in the hand!

No! I am not a military firearms collector, I'm not, really I don't care what my actions reveal over the last few weeks. I don't think wanting more makes me a collector, I don't "need" a USGI carbine, I just want one. I can quit whenever I want.........

I've always had a soft spot for WWII military arms, mostly American but another country sneaks in every once in a while. The picture is not good but you get the idea:

Gotta love the bayonet on the M1917 in that last pic. I still have my dad's 1917 and bayonet... and I swear if you ever run out of ammo that bayo would make a great short sword!

Picked up an original Johnson M1941 SAR recently to add to the collection.
Also managed to find an original bayonet and scabbard for the Johnson.
Will get it out to the range soon, what a cool weapon this is!! The prices are going nuts on these guns as of late.......

Also grabbed an original late WWII "Last Ditch" 8mm Nambu and a sealed 16-count packet of ammo......the Nambu date is 11/44 and the ammo packet is 1/45

A recent addition to my small collection. It may look familiar to Tom.

I've always had a soft spot for US military firearms, unfortunately my current economic situation doesn't allow for the premium these guns rightfully carry. I have an M1 Garand, I'd love to fill out a basic WWII GI set by adding an M1 carbine, M1911a1, and 1903a3.
Of course if you include foreign military I'd like to do an Allies set: all the previously mentioned guns, my 91/30, add an Enfield, and the appropriate handguns.

Only got the one.
And it looks like it earned it's keep.

PS. But also have some service sidearms from other Countries though.

Edit. And it's a mismatch to boot. ( Ithaca mostly but with a Remington Rand frame)

Yes, I also have a fondness for older US military arms. ODCMP provided me several years of opportunities to stockpile M1 rifles (SA, Winchester, IHC, HRA), along with a few M1903's and 03/A3's. M1 Carbines have been a favorite of mine since the 1960's. Krag rifles and carbines have been a hobby for several decades. Trapdoor Springfield rifles have given me much pleasure on the range. Couple of 1860 Colt Army revolvers, a London Colt Navy revolver, 1849 Pocket Colt, couple of Remington New Army revolvers, all have been an education and fun at the range as well. US M1911 and M1911A-1 pistols have been an obsession for decades. WW1 and WW2 revolvers including M1917 Colt and S&W, a Colt Commando, and a couple of Victory models. A very nice 1943 Johnson has been fun, both as a source of research and on the range. Had a registered M1A1 Thompson years ago, but foolishly sold it before the market went absolutely off the charts.

Not military, but I also enjoy a pre-Civil War percussion rifle that I restored to firing condition, and have taken a couple of meals with it in recent years.

A very few I have some provenance on, mostly from family members selling off estate items. Others, well I just wish they could talk. They are all pieces of our national history!

Default Model of 1911 US Army WWI

This was in one of the last shipments from Colt to Bush Terminal, New York for delivery to the American Expeditionary Forces in the fall of 1918. It shoots as good as it looks. Some call these “black” Army 1911’s. Colt was told by the Army to expedite the shipment so they skipped the final polishing step before bluing. One of my grail guns!

Lets see I have a S&W victory, S&W 1917, Postal Meter M1 carbine and a early Trapdoor Springfield. I had a 1943 Springfield M1, and a Remington 03-A3. I sold those to help a friend who was in dire straights.

More an accumulator than a collector, I have acquired a few over the years:

M-1 Carbines (Inland/Saginaw/Postal Meter)
M1903A3
M1917 Eddystone
Krag
M1911A-1 (Ithaca)
M1917 S&W

I've also got a few Enfields, a Luger, and a few other allied and axis guns.

The 1917 Eddystone has the most family connections. One of my grandfathers helped build the Eddystone plant, both grandfathers worked in the plant during World War One, and my great uncle carried a 1917 with the AEF in France in 1918.

My knowledge base of military items is weak, and I am hesitant to pay the big bucks when there is a lot of fraudulent activity. But I have 6 items that I hope are authentic WWII:

They look righteous to me. The 1911 might be a mixmaster but that would not concern me if the price was right just part of the history. I doubt armorers were very concerned with us collectors during wartime maintenance and repairs.

I am still not a collector, just a shooter. Somehow the only firearms I have any current interest in are no longer being made and are more often than not military in origin. This Saturday my wife will be out of town and the Colorado Gun Collector's show will be taking place. Feel the fear and do it anyway is a mantra I try to live by. Can you say Eddystone? A WWI RIA 1903? An IBM or Underwood M1 Carbine? My 2nd M28? (not military I know)
I have never been to this highly regarded show before. I am excited to see the displays that are in the judged competetion, but with a great deal of vetted historical only product for sale my question is, can I stay at my maximum dollar allowance?

I am still not a "real" collector and I am still married (happily)! I went to the show in search of a shooter grade M1917, preferably an Eddystone. After 2 amazing hours, one of the vendors I was chatting with lead me to this:

Oh, and I spent half of my Eddystone budget on this particular mix master and less than a third of my show budget. Rebuilt at least twice, rebarreled by the military, a fabulous Winchester stock, lots of cosmoline in hiding and a fantastic shooter! Accurate and reliable after its first 100 rounds! Win, win, win.

I've collected US metallic cartridge military arms for 40 years and have most of the rifles staring with the Spenser, Sharps thru the trial rifles in the late 1870 and 1880s, Trapdoors, Krags, Springfield's M1 Carbines, Johnson, Garand's and H&R M16A1.
