I was doing well -- For about five minutes
Sold off three long guns to make room in the safe and have funds in my pocket when I hope go to a gun show in December.
The new empty space and cash were refreshing -- and stayed unmolested for about five minutes:
Saw this, made a reasonable bid, and won the auction
1925 Remington 17
I need you guys to save me from myself

That's like going down to the bar to see your friends to ask for help to stop drinking.

Nice shotgun from milled parts days. You can't go wrong with
this one. If you decide you don't want it you can always melt it
down a make 4 Mossbergs and three 870s out of it and sell the
left over steel for scrap.

I've bought a few milsurps over the year at great prices. One week I was on a roll when a buddy said, "Steve, you keep saving money like that you're gonna go broke."

I inherited a Remington 17 that saw a lot of use by my father and grandfather. I'm not much of a shotgun guy, but the 17 is really a handy shotgun. I like the fact that is sized appropriately for a 20 gauge and is not a 12 gauge chambered in 20 gauge. Looks like a great find!

Sorry I'm no help....I'm still hunting with my Grand Father's 1929 model 17 Remington.....the neatest little 20 ga. ever built...
Now don't just sit her in the safe, a day spent hunting small game or quail ( my grand paw called them " birds") is just wonderful.
It carries easily and shoulders like magic. I enjoy hunting squirrels and rabbits with it...it's a winner ...Sweet score ,
Gary

That is in very nice condition and at first I thought it was a Winchester 12 in the picture. They looked similar back in the day. How long is the barrel and what is the choke on it? I always take a long look at any older shotgun with 30 inch or longer barrel on it. Just a trap junkie I guess? Enjoy your gun!

28" Full Choke
Here is a picture from a closed online auction of a 20 gauge Model 12
Here is a different Remington 17 below a 12 gauge Model 21
IMHO the Remington 17 is one good looking shotgun

What I like about the model 17 is the bottom ejection....I Lost the sight in my right , formerly dominant eye and had to start shooting left handed....there was no problem , it works just fine lefty or righty....might say it's the ambidextrous shotgun.

I remember your fancier Model 17. You didn't sell it, I hope?
I presume that all here know that Ithaca based their famous Model 37 on the Remington M-17. The patents had run out and Lou Smith at Ithaca refined the design a little and made the M-37.
An M-37 is improved a bit and is easier to locate.

Rest easy. The guns I sold were a Ruger No. 1, a Winchester Model 70 and a Baker Batavia Leader. The fancier 17, pictured above with Model 21 and below is still in the fold.
Right now I am looking at Remington 17's. It's a lot easier to acquire a gaggle of nice Remington 17's than even one of the more pricey collectable guns.
