Went from Old School to Older School
What can I say, I like pre-WWII guns
I also like period correct scopes/sights
Went from the 1927/1928 Savage 99G in .300 Savage with Stith/Lyman Alaskan:
Back to the same gun with a Lyman tang mounted aperture:

I too enjoy a vintage Weaver, it sits atop an early 1950's JC Higgins 30-06 that belonged to my grandfather. I hunt with it every year. The scope that came with the gun was a K-4, but it seemed to not be able to hold a zero. Now it wears a similar vintage Weaver K-6. A lot of my hunting friends can not understand how I continue to bring in deer with '....that old rifle....'.....they all seem to buy a new gun every year since our local deer have grown to bullet proof monsters (maybe zombie deer?)

You could tell them its because you actually HIT THE DEER with that 'ole grandad' while all the newfangled stuff on earth don't get the dèer they MISS to come over and give them a second or third chance at closer range...

Nice Savage.
The first I saw was old enough to have
almost all the finish worn off. It was a
.38-55 with the cartridge counter.
Hunted with a friend's 99 in .308 for an afternoon once
but didn't get a chance at a deer.

I like the windage adj Lyman tang sight. Don't see many of those anymore.
Nice Model 99.
Just sold a mid 50's in 300Sav.
Still have my 1912(?) mfg Model 1899. C grade (1/2 oct bbl, tang sight) in 30-30.
No finish left but a good shooter

That looks great. It really adds to the hunt when using vintage equipment if you ask me.

It’s the old Stith Mount
The original Savage 99 was not drilled for scope mounts, just tang holes in back for a peep sight and a dovetail for a leafsight in the front as original equipment
The Stith used the tang holes and the front dovetail to mount a scope. Very ingenious

About 30 years ago I had an old .300 Savage 99 with a very similar looking scope in a Stith mount. The Stith mount only works with very old low power scopes. Even back then relatively new fixed power scopes with no bell for a larger objective lens were all too short to be supported that far forward. I went through several Savage 99s without keeping any very many years because they stretch brass bad. However, I was not without one for long. Eventually I had to admit that I had an irrational attraction to them. Similarly, there are better guns than Colt SAAs but but people also want them. I have two of the Savages now. Thanks for showing yours. I had forgotten my Stith mounted 99.

I've wanted one like that for approximately forever. I can no longer hunt or afford guns, but I'd still love to have one just to admore and pass along to my son and his boys.

Sorry guys, but I would rather have my Stevens 25-06. No recoil and has a 100 gr bullet with a MV of 3500 FPS. Never though I would have anything better then a 30-06. Just goes to show even old dogs can learn!

Hasn’t anyone told you you need a $3,000 rifle with a $2,000 scope chambered in the latest golly-gee magnum round to kill deer?

I do like the Savages! I have a similar model G but unfortunately it was drilled and tapped so it carries a 4 power Lyman All-American.

I like the guys that think you need a rifle that will shoot half inch groups at 100 yards to get a deer. Or the guys at the shooting range that have never fired a rifle off hand. Always wonder if they are going to drag the shooting bench out in the woods with them. Even better are they guys that say any rifle that will not shoot 1 inch groups at 100 yards is junk. Then you go shooting with them and the best they can do is a 5 inch group.
My perfect deer rifle is a $89 Mosin-Nagant with no scope. I can shoot 6 inch groups off hand at 100 yards. Sounds good to me. Turns out that a 77 caliber match lock smoothbore can also kill a deer. Not sure what 100 group size would be since I have never actually hit the target at that distance. It does not have any sights at all on it. But somehow it still brings home a deer.

Great take down 99. My .300 is an EG which looks like a solid frame version of yours. Most 99s encountered for sale seem to be EGs. My dad knew I loved this gun so he gave it to me for my 40th b'day. It has sixteen notches on the fore end edge from deer shot by the previous owner. A friend gave me the Stith mount and I traded another guy out of the Lyman Alaskan.
