Kart 1911 .22 Conversion Unit
Thought I would share a couple of pic's of something that I've been wanting for some time. I recently came into the possession of this 6" 1911 .22 Conversion Unit manufactured by Fred Kart under the umbrella of United States Arms Corp, Riverhead. N.Y. The slide is marked Kart. It's an early one, serial#0091. It came with (2) 5 round magazines, one magazine is marked U.S. Arms Corp on the floor plate, the other marked Kart. It's in very nice, lightly used condition with the only mark being a light scratch to the left of the barrel address.
Not much historical info on-line about these or Fred Kart for that matter. I do know that they are well known for their superb accuracy. I've also read some horror stories about difficulties in making them run without issues. Who else has one and what can you tell me about them?

I bought a Gold Cup years ago and it came with the Kart conversion. I owned it for about a year then traded it off, but for the time I had it I never had any issues, shooting maybe 500 rounds through it.

Lucky you! I’ve had my eye on one of those off and on for years but didn’t buy one when I should have, so I can’t give you any actual-experience reports, but I will be watching this thread for more info. I’ve never heard of anyone having great trouble with them. Most of the issues I’ve seen discussed seemed to center around ammo selection and keeping up with cleaning. Nothing much capable of good accuracy benefits from lackadaisical maintenance. Let us know how this one works for you.

That is a beauty. Sorry, nope, I have never owned or handled one but I have certainly known about them, they have some history in Bullseye circles for the rimfire portion of that game. That setup looks like a winner to me!

UPDATE: Range Report
Took my Kart 1911 Conversion to the range this morning. Mounted on the pictured Colt Series 70 GM frame. I ran 150 trouble free CCI SV rounds through it using both magazines. I just had to tweak the rear sight a bit and the result was this target. I'm pretty impressed with it.

I've not heard of "the Shooting Federation of Canada" but I find it curious that it's an official 20 yard target. I'm assuming that this standard was in place before the Dominion went all metric on us?

I still have a complete Kart 22 made in the early 60s. This one is made from an old Ace slide. They were cut with a jewelers saw. I think it is #17. From what I was told the early ones were prone to crack somewhere up to #10 until Fred perfected them and the first ones were destroyed. I also have a nos 6 inch conversion with spare parts and Kart magazines that I paid $850 for a long time ago. I mounted it on a frame and made sure it would function correctly and then put it in a safe place. They were built for Bullseye target shooting and will only hold 5 rounds. I drag mine out about once a year for about 50 rounds. This one will function with most any ammo. Yours is classy looking. Gary

The SFC is the governing body for target shooting sports in Canada. They have been around for decades. All competition targets have the SFC seal.
I pretty sure Canada went totally metric by the late 70's, long after I finished high school. I still speak non metric as most of my generation does.

4barrel, thanks for sharing - especially the old (early) unit made by cutting a Colt Conversion. As you, I have complete Kart in .22 and a 45 on Colt frame plus one of the early ones made from CC - and too many Kart and Colt Conversion kits and mags. Probably should put some up for sale. The Kart requires a modified slide stop which are about impossible to find these days. When I do shoot, have to decide between a S&W 41 5.5", HS Victor 5.5" and Kart (1911 frame) - all great pistols.
Again, thanks for sharing.

4barrel,
You never cease to amaze me by the quality pieces in your possession. Thanks for posting. I now have a pretty good handle on Kart 1911 .22 Conversions. I was hoping Tom would chime in as I know he's also an affectionato of Kart's from his threads on rimfirecentral. Thank you gentlemen!
