Hey all I am now hopelessly hooked on the Case Knifes. Have a Peanut & Small Stockman. Love the Peanut and have really put it threw its paces in last few months. Picked up a small Stockman last month like its size about the same a Peanut just a bit longer but love the 3 blade option. My question the peanut came with the mirrored Stainless finish fairly sharpe out the box. The lil Stockmam came with like brushed stainless finish. And razor sharp.Does Case use differant metal in some of their small knifes?.Big differance shaprness from those too models.

I am aware of two different finishes for Case’s stainless, a mirror finish and a matte “as ground” finish. There may be more. AFAIK, they just use the one stainless, plus of course, their CV (for chrome vanadium), a carbon steel that will take a patina.

Now you have me looking at Case. Fortunately I like locking blade pocket knives mostly. There is a massive variety of Case patterns and scale materials out there. I can see why they are collectible. Case generally uses two types of steel for the blades in the slip joint knives they make. They make some with the Chrome Vanadium steel, which in my experience tends not to hold it's edge quite as well or as long and the second type, which they call True Sharp* Surgical Stainless Steel. Both are good knives, but I prefer the second type of steel myself.

I just received a catalog from Smokey Mountain Knife Works a week or so ago. This catalog lists several of the different styles and patterns of the Case knives with frosty darker grey colored blades as opposed to the shiny steels in the first two types I mentioned above. They call this steel Stonewash finish Chrome Vanadium. This is my first remembered notice of this type of blade finish. I have no experience with it, but would guess since it's Chrome Vanadium only stonewashed, the steel will behave in the same way as the shiny CV which Case has been using for a long time!

Look at the Trapperlock. Thats my next lock blade. I too carry a EDC lock blade of some sort rear pocket. And front gets either the case peanut or small stockman. I put my hands on a trapperlock at Ace hardware last week .Really like it . Again I don't know why I haven't had case before. Wal-Mart.com has free shipping on case it can be had thete for around $50.00 for plain jane trapperlock. Ace is at full retail at $79.00.
