Big Folding Knife
American1776's thread about his new Spyderco Military got me thinking about big pocket knives. The bulk of my folders are in the 2" to 3 3/4" range. I'd love a Military to have a big folder available, but so many knives and so few dollars.
I had an interesting knife in as a guest of over Christmas. My mild mannered cousin from San Antonio was in town and I offered to sharpen his REKAT Sifu D-2 Enhanced folder. This knife is a huge pocket knife. It's blade is D-2 tool steel and has a recurve. My Syperco Sharpmaker with optional diamond and ultra-fine ceramic triangle rods was able to restore the big blade to extreme sharpness.
I believe my cousin has had the knife since about the turn of the century. REKAT Round Eye Knife and Tool went bankrupt years ago. This thing was tactical before tactical was cool. It's not something I'd carry every day, but my cousin loves it. My Spyder Delica ZDP-189 blade for comparison in one picture.

Buck 110s are 3 3/4" and mostly two hand openers. The 110 Automatic is a classic switchblade in my mind. The Sifu's blade is just shy of 5 1/2" and is a one hand opener. This REKAT thing is huge compared to a Buck 110. I'm not knocking Buck 110s, it's just that big is relative.

Biggest folding knife I had was probably a Emerson SOCFK (I think that's how it's spelled). I think the blade was somewhere around 4".

Looks like a balisong I had. Flipping it was a lot of fun. Wish I had it here.

Yup, and when I flipped it open the first time, I gashed the back of my hand.
That's not a false edge on the back of the blade, it had a sharpened double edged blade.
First thing I did after I got the bleeding to stop was take a file to it and make it a false edge.

Ouch. Mine was single-edged. Not sure I'd want to flip a double-edged balisong, especially one that big.

I'll vote for the Buck 110. I've had one since the late 60's. However just so you know Schrade used to make an Uncle Henry folder, a Bear Paw Lockback, that was slightly larger than a buck 110, and had a thumb knob to open it with one hand. I have one. It's a hefty beast. Looks a lot like the Buck 110. Overall length open is about 12 inches. Saw one on BladesPlus for about $23 without the leather pouch. The pouch is $10,
CRKT made a Tactical Knife called Cobra Gold. It too was a one hander. About 13 inches open. Much lighter than the Buck or the Schrade. I also have one in my collection. They don't make them anymore but you might find a used one on Ebay or knife sites. Saw one on eBay for about $30.

As a fan of the Delica I can only say that is a honking big folder, as in what Crocodile Dundee would refer to as "This IS a Knife".

Spyderco Endura and SOG FlashII are plenty big enough for me. I need one-hand-opening knives due to severely arthritic hands, or I'd add a Buck 110.
If you want a big blade, look at the #12 Opinel. Makes a fine camp cooking knife.

Yeah I know. But in many years of EDC I have NEVER found a situation where I just had to have one handed opening. My two handed slipjoints and buck 110 work just fine.

I'm completely opposite, if its been ground to accept double edge...... I'll spend hours sharpening it to a double edge.
But, I don't have that huge knife either.

My G96 3080 from the early 70s has a 4" main blade plus a saw blade.I carry it cased on a 1 1/2" belt since it's too heavy and bulky for my pocket. The Spyderco Dragonfly II is just right for my pocket and the 2 1/2" 686-4 IWB appendix carry.

I have one of these too. Don't carry it but you can tuck it away easier than you'd think. Only bought it because I ran across it at a little resale mall, new in the box with a $50 tag on it. Too good a deal to pass up.

Nice! I've been looking at Hinderers for years but never picked one up. Seems like their prices have dropped the last couple of years so I may take another look at them.
