Smaller grips would be nice.

I've always been a big fan of the old Detective Special. When Colt announced the new Cobra I was excited and wanted to see one. When I finally got one in my hands it was a bit disappointing. Oh, it felt good and the trigger was excellent, but I was turned off by the rather cheap looking stainless finish and the fiber optic sight.
This Night Cobra is a lot closer to what I would want. If they put the hammer spur back, I'd likely buy one.

Well it's going to MSRP at $200 more than what the 2017 Stainless model was and for what? Different color and less hammer, however I do like it better but still I guess I'm too much a traditionalists. Never got over Colt prostituting the name of their very successful lightweight snubnose; Cobra for an new all steel version.

^^^^what he said. Still can't understand that 'kink' in the trigger guard; looks as though the gun had been dropped and the guard was damaged. As poster lonestar57 writes, the gun should be known as a Detective Special.

Yep.
I bought it from an NYPD det who had just retired, about two years ago.

Aaaah....the ugly duckling. One of my favorites. No concern about the finish.

2018 Colt Night Cobra
The new Cobra looks better with small grips.
Here is the real deal spurless Cobra from 1973, sitting below a 1975 in nickel.
Pile of scrap

My refinished Detective Specials looks like an 80’s Agent.

I think Colt's marketing went with the Cobra name because it was the first snake gun, and they probably felt a series of snake guns has more cache' than simple model numbers. Making an aluminum framed revolver as the first one out of the gate wouldn't make sense. So we're stuck with an all stainless steel Cobra for now. Maybe a Bantamweight Cobra in the future?
The new Night Cobra is exactly what I had hoped for when I first saw the new Cobra: DAO, bobbed or shrouded hammer, a darker non-reflective finish, and night sights. I was initially a little put off by the $200 price bump, but the finish is a DLC coating, not just a cheaper paint. That finish and the night sights with VZ grips add up to enough value to justify the increased cost.
And if initial reports are to be believed, the trigger pull is even better than the stainless version which is pretty darn good. This makes sense. On a Colt's action, every part does multiple functions. You can't change one part without having an effect on other parts. It seems that with a Colt DA/SA, you can get either a pretty good single action trigger and a pretty good double action trigger OR a really great double action trigger and forget about the single action. If the double action trigger on this new Night Cobra is as good as they say, I won't miss the single action.

The new Colt reminds me of a Taurus. Also the name, "Night Cobra" sounds like a 70's Kung fu movie title.

Mr. NCBeagle nice scrap pile! Did you have to modify the Badger grips in order to fit them on your new model Cobra?

Hey partner, nice scrap pile. How many ways can you say "WOW"? What I like most , they're all carry pieces, aren't they? Not a safe queen among them. Carry them in good health.
