That's great news!
I was getting a bit worried about CMP as their supply of M1s was drying up. The 1911s alone wouldn't be enough to keep them going. Now it looks like they'll be around for quite a while yet.
If you've ever wanted a M1, this is the best way to get one.

Good news! Hopefully the South Korean batch of Garands and Carbines will follow soon...

Absoultely. Yes, the So Koreans have a ton of them sitting in warehouses. Back at the beginning of the last administration (2008ish) CMP reported having 125,000 on hand in all states (including bare receivers, etc.). If you visit CMP you can see that nearly all the categories of grades/makers are sold out now. This is great that they are getting "fresh" stock.

Good news! Garands are a top grade rifle but the 1911's will be gone in a flash! Let your elected officials know they need to support CMP and get the rest home asap.

I’ve purchased four Garands from CMP in the last 6 months and managed to get all the makers, SA, Winchester, HRA, and IHC. All were service grades with excellent barrels and fairly nice USGI stocks. The SA is an almost all original late WW2 with the exception of the trigger group. There were some real nice rifles coming out of the CMP lately but it appears to have dried up very recently. Quite a few still had US Army inventory tags attached so apparently they weren’t foreign returns.
Some Turkish rifles are starting to show up according to what guys are receiving now and word is so far the Philippine and Turkish rifles are a little rough. But it’s hard to get inside info.

Curious, would these be marked to show they were exported/imported?
I'm thinking "Yes" which would be a deal breaker for me.

No, they would not be stamped with anything, other than original markings.

The rifles the CMP sells are US Government property. They were "loaned" to other countries, who return them when they are done with them. The US government disposes of them via CMP.

There is no "export" nor "import" involved. There are no stamps on them.

Guns that were bought by a foreign country, whether with their own funds or aid, are owned by that country and if they are sold here they would be stamped by an importer in accordance with US law, just as all imports have to be.

The CMP does not sell imports. The ROK M1's are owned by ROK. They are not US Property, and wouldn't be handled by the CMP. If those arrive here, it will be through an importer and would require stamps. The Trukish and PI guns are US Property that's just being returned and not imported, so no stamps on them.

Interesting because you are the only person I have ever seen assert that the M1s held by the So Koreans are not loaned to them and are not US property. All the advocates have been clamoring for them to be brought back and surplussed through CMP. Can you point me to some source that supports the idea that they are not US Property?

Thanks, but that is a) from 2010, b) says there are rumors of So Korea trying to sell them, and c) that there is some confusion about how many were loaned and how many purchased by So Korea.

First, So Korea can not sell loaned weapons. The previous administration blocked ANY talk of them returning, adding to the confusion about their status. There are documents out there that we loaned at least a large portion of the M1s to Korea. So, there are M1s that are US Property sitting in warehouses in Korea. How many, what percentage, etc. is not definitively spelled out anywhere I know of but am open to looking into any leads on this topic. Thanks.

I’m sure if your not in the click with CMP you won’t get first dibs. The good stuff will be long gone. Then the vegimite ( the bottom sludge of beer making) will be left at a high price. I’m just saying.

First of all, the CMP definitely doesn’t over price their Garands. That’s why people (dealers), sadly, buy their allotment and sell at gun shows for $300-$400 above cost.
And if you would read the requirements you would see they’re doing this the fairest way possible. Everyone is told at the same time they are taking your paperwork. Your name is put in and they will randomly pick people that can purchase one, and they will go in order of the pick and you will have your pick of condition from rough to nice and the price will be low to high. Then they go to the next person. If your in the early picks you have a choice of a nice one if you can afford it. Word is the worst ones will be starting at around $1000. Do some pricing of WWII era 1911 in refinished condition and that’s not bad. Both of your post have trashed the CMP, but if it wasn’t for them a lot of people wouldn’t have a lot of the military weapons in their collection that they do and many M1 Garands and M1 carbines would have been put in a crusher. Something to think about.

The CMP charges market price or a little below. Always have as long as I have been buying from them(20 years). While I appreciate the thought of giving vets these M1's, there are more than enough vets out there to swallow up all of the CMP's inventory. Their charter is to fund and promote shooting sports through the sales of military surplus rifles. The more money they make the better as far as I am concerned.

You really want to get a Garand into the hands of a deserving veteran? These guys accept donations of Garands, parts and money to do just that, and having been doing so since 2005.

I’ve bought 6 Garands, a 1903, and a Remington 40X from the CMP. All were in better shape than I expected, even the HRA M1 Greek return rack grade that was $295.

I’m a vet (one of 21.8 million), and I gladly pay their prices.

This is great news.

I also hope there's a couple of tons of ammo coming back with those rifles. I bought garands & carbines & ammo from the CMP years ago........A trip to Anniston with a pocket full of money was GREAT...Hope it will get that way again!

I'm still active but I will happily pay to get a M1 as well. Worth every penny to own a little piece of the Army's history.

The government is making a nice profit on those M1's. Back in the early 1960's, they were listed in the Army supply bulletin at $97.50 each.

By report, the ROK Garands and Carbines were either purchased by their government or were left as surplus by our military. If they do come back, as noted above they will be via an importer.

The CMP uses the proceeds from the sales to fund their operations; "the Government" is transferring the current batch of 1911s to stop paying arsenal storage fees, so it is a win-win to me for everyone, including the buyers.

Not free, but a reasonable price would suffice imho.

For those of you who fail to grasp the whole concept of the CMP and why they sell these firearms it might be worth considering the alternative which is that these lend lease firearms are returned and scrapped by our government.

That's really the only alternative as without the CMP the government is not going to sell firearms to the civilian populations, veterans or not.

Back when it was the DCM prices may have been quite low by comparison but as I recall you were also limited to one lifetime purchase. I'm sure few would want to reapply that limit today if is came with a lower price but I could be wrong.

I noticed on their website the CMP is a 501(c)3 organization, meaning they accept tax-deductible charitable donations. They seem to focus more on estate planning donations, not surprising given they deal with 40-70 year old surplus firearms sales and those interested in them.

I see no reason, however, why one cannot donate directly to the CMP to support their programs. As a non-profit, they might be able to lower what they charge for firearms if enough people do it, as I suspect that is nearly all of their revenue stream. Any takers?

With inflation, that would be somewhere around $800 in today’s dollars. I’ve never checked, but how much does CMP charge for a repatriated Garand?

I'd like to know too. I put off buying a M1 for years and figured I missed my chance as CMP stock dwindled. These P.I. and Turk returns are like a second chance.
The 1911's... I don't know. I'm having a hard time with the supposed $1K price tag.

Uncle Sam gave you a paycheck. Use that to get one. Pretty sure the recruiter told you exactly what you would be getting before you signed the papers. My guess would be that a free M1 was not part of the deal. But you can vote for Bernie Sanders in 2020. He will give you all sorts of free stuff.

I know what you mean. I'm just hoping it means there will be more Garands about generally.

An alternative for those of you who don't want to pay CMP prices for a Garand might be the ones Springfield Armory puts out from time to time. All brand new with the receiver made in Australia as I recall. No history except the one you give it and it seems like they sell for over $1,000 when you can find them but it's another option.

they WERE loaned, however, ROK insists they are theirs. CMP states they will never get these back.

For all those complaining about prices, you need to check what open market M1 Garands, M1 Carbines and G.I. 1911s are selling for these days. CMP sells their guns below that. They are more than fair with their prices.

For some reason, lots of people find that hard to believe, no matter how much the facts back that up.

But it never fails. Never. If you follow these threads about the CMP, or CMP Garands or CMP 1911s...there will always be someone comes along badmouthing the CMP about one thing or another...usually their pricing.

It's like the earth rotating on its axis. You know it happens every day. With CMP threads, you know it's gonna happen...only question is how many posts it'll take before it happens.

^^^^^ yes, that
what is interesting is when I hear folks say, when I bought my CMP Garand it was $250 ---- I have seen prices go up, but that was a long time ago... thats like the guys who tell me, I bought lugers and P38s for $25 each (of course that was in the early 60's and they made $100 a week or less )

I'm not digging the 1911 with the heavy park jobs.

I am debating between buying a new 1911 now with some cash I have laying around or an M1. I will say though that if the M1's won't be released until later in the year, I can come up with the cash before then, hence my question of when they will be hitting the racks!

I feel the same way. I just bought a nice original 1943 Ithaca because I figured the CMP 1911 that I could afford would look about like what is being shown. I’d rather use the money saved from buying a CMP 1911 for a 70 series from the 60’s or 70’s or one of the newer 70 Series. I already have 3 nice M1’s so I’m set there. I have no desire for what’s coming back. Decent M1’s are available most every week right now from the CMP. People are reporting getting some good ones.

The gorilla in the room with CMP is the widespread resale of CMP-purchased guns.

All the CMP guns I've received are still in the family. I actually put some value to the name my Dad gave me and when I sign something that says I'm not buying it to resell, I mean it. Others, not so much.

I like, in principle, the idea of vets getting some kind of break on these guns. But I know with 99,000 Garands and 21,800,000 vets out there its not going to work. Even if you limit it to guys who could have actually been issued one in WW2 or Korea, you are still at over 2 million people.

If these guns were priced substantially below market value, 75% of them would be at the gunshow a week later. Haven't you seen M1s still in the CMP box at a gunshow? I know I have.

A grand for a legit GI 1911 is a decent price. The last one I bought on the open market was $1800 and I was glad to find it.

If you priced these 1911s at 50 bucks, all it would mean is somebody other than CMP would get the other $950. I'd rather have it go to CMP.

I bet some of the rougher rack grade M1s in this lot will be around $500. Even at that, guys will buy all they can, sign up their wives, kids, cousins, and buddies to get more, and try to flip them at the gunshow.

Fortunately, only one per year for the 1911. And the CMP has decent M1 Garands available on a weekly basis. People are reporting that they are receiving good examples.

The CMP in Anniston(south store) has and have had garands in several grades for sale forever..........They never did totally run out like they did on carbines. Go to the CMP website and see whats up for sale right now.

I agree the prices are fair. The last field grade Garand I saw was quite nice for $630. The value in a Garand is obvious to me as it's a very good shooting rifle out of the box. My mental block with the 1911's is I'm guessing they will probably be loose and have worn barrel bushings for wonderful accuracy. I don't like the A1 rounded MSH and every mil-spec I've shot tries to split open the web of my hand. Sights suck too, and I won't mention I'm left handed and the safety is not fun to use. Are they worth a grand? Sure! Probably double your money in a couple years. Me? I don't see it.

It don't matter doodly-squat what a Garand or anything else sold for a half-century ago, you ain't gonna get one for that price now.

Apparently the rifles just arrived a "few days ago" or "recently", according to Internet gun blogs. I doubt they've all been unpacked and inspected, so just like the 1911s, they don't know what they have yet. I doubt there'll be any carbines, though. But you never know.

The CMP, itself, has not furnished any info on their website regarding the Garands. Internet gun blogs say the CMP "announced" this at the SHOT show. I wasn't at the SHOT show, so I don't know if they did or not.

If you want to know facts about current inventory, information regarding the Garands, or anything else about the CMP, I'd suggest you make regular visits to their website. It's very informative.

I'll also suggest you get on their e-mailing list (it's free) and get up to date information straight from the horse's mouth, instead of relying on what you read on gun forums and gun-related gossip sites.

Over on the CMP forum in the last couple of weeks guys have started getting Garands with dope tags written in “Turk” in them so it appears the Turkish rifles are being sent out. IHC service grades were just reposted as available on the order page so get them while you can. Field grade SA’s or HRA’s can be had for $630 shipped to your door in a nice hard case. Haven’t seen any locally or at gun shows for any where near that price. Get them now if you want one, 10 years from now you may be lamenting about the good old days.
