Default Ithaca 37 shotgun

What would be a reasonable price for a 16 gauge Model 37 Ithaca pump shotgun in about 95-98% original condition? Very clean shotgun with a 28 inch full barrel. Seller asking $600 firm. This is an early 50’s gun that is totally original as far as finish on metal and wood. Thanks for any help on this!

In our area, (upstate NY), $350-400 would be about tops. A 12 or 20 would be a bit more desirable since shells are cheaper and more available.
The 16 is a great gauge, but not very popular. If you are looking for a pump gun in the $600 range, get yourself a nice Rem 870---lots of parts and interchangeable barrels and stocks available.

$600 would be at the very top, Vent rib? The 20 gauge usually brings more money. They are very good shotguns, a joy in the field. If you have to have a 16, there maybe others at a better price.

Are you an Ithaca 37 aficionado? If so, you'll know that the 16 gauge models are hard to come by. It took me a couple years before I found a really nice one and I wouldn't take less than $600 for mine. I had missed one at the local Cabelas that was practically NIB, all it needed was the box. It sold for $650 and this was 3-4 years ago. If the one you're looking at has the solid rib, check this prewar model, https://www.gunbroker.com/item/739613824 .

For that degree of finish I don't think $600 is out of line. 16 gauge 37's are not found everywhere and I would offer $550, just 'cuz that's how I am, but I really like the 16, and reload for it.7/8 loads are fun to shoot and accurate, too.
I've had Deerslayers, and other 37's in 12 ga since the 60's but the 16 just tickles my fancy. wouldn't sell mine for less than $500 and it's about 65% condition.
Stock up on ammo and you're good to go.

That would be a gun & price for a small market of folks that really like the 16ga and are willing to pay the price for a Field Grade (assumption) M37 16ga in that exc condition.

Most people wouldn't, but like they always say, it's worth what someone is willing to pay.
I've always disliked that phrase prefering to talk about a general market price for guns.

I think the market price for the gun would be closer to $400, and only that because of the vintage and the condition.
But that special person may walk by at a show or come into a shop and not be able to leave w/o it at the asking price.
Do you really love it and can't live with out it!

Many who would buy a shotgun primarily as a user would shun one in 16 gauge. To get a high price, say in the $500-$600 range, would require a buyer who was more of a collector than a hunter. I'd agree that most sellers would be asking more like $350-$400 if they wanted to sell it in a reasonable time.

Thanks for the info. I have one 16 gauge 37 and have had it since I was about 15 years old. Bought it for $75.00 about 1972. No, I don’t really need it but just like the looks of it. Just a nice original piece that would only go up in value I think. I really like the 16 gauge to hunt with and there is ammo if you look for it. Not decided yet, but it is weighing heavily on my mind.
