Mine is a German made (circa 1900) numbers matching Swedish Mauser M96 still in 6.5 x 55. When I got it last year, someone had already trimmed a couple of inches of the bore for some reason and put on a totally different front sight, so I got it cheap, had my local smith cut the barrel down to an even 20 inches, put on a different but correct height front sight, cut the stock to match the forearm so I can use the sling swivels and had a target crown out on. It shoots great and is fairly light. I took my first deer in seven years with it last fall, a small whitetail doe from the border of a cornfield, at about 100 yards.

Honestly, I don't get the whole hate "Bubba" thing.
I used to follow a Facebook page about restoring military surplus rifles, but the hate unleashed on these guns drove me away.
Apparently, if you take the original (but modified) stock off a gun, and replace it with an unmodified stock from a completely different gun, you have now restored its originality and history.
Sorry - the modified "Bubba-ized" stock is part of the history of the rifle. In that state it probably fired more rounds and served more of a purpose than it did in it original guise, where it most likely sat in a warehouse or armory for several decades, until Bubba got it.
"Bubba" was us, or our Dads, or Granddads, or Uncles. They paid a small amount for a gun that they then suited to their needs, probably using an article in the American Rifleman or Guns as a guide.
I like these old guns just they way they wound up.

Among other things I collect military rifles. I prefer originals with good provenance, but on occasion I come across one that has been "bubbafied". I also frequent several, of the military forums. One will not allow talk about bubbaed guns and will ban you if you dare speak evil. I find that odd. After all, we didn't do it personally so why criticize us?
As far as evil short barreled "illegal" shotguns, if it requires a special permit then its not what your every-day gun collector would own. Telling people here its OK may make some non-informed people want to cut off their shotgun to 11", or whatever.
That is not a bubba gun, its just something someone did just because they can. Makes no other sense.
And that's all I have to say about that...

Not a "Bubba", but by me in my early years. When I needed a gun for USPSA competition. I did the majority of the work, except for milling the slide for Bowmar sights, and plating the frame and bluing the slide. Fit frame to slide, lower and relieve the ejection port, install beaver-tail grip safety, install long trigger, install oversize mag button, stipple frame, stipple slide top, Install front sight, 4 lb trigger job, enlarger mag well, ambi safety, match barrel & bushing fit, open and bevel the ejection port.
I think that's about all, it's been 25+ years ago.

Very nice
I remember those day days.
Sitting at the bench stippling the front strap, fitting the slide and barrel.
This one was after my IPSC days. It is my first 9x23 Winchester back when the cartridge was first comming out
I had a co-worker that called EVERY modified firearm a "BUBBA" For him it had to be 100% OEM

Now that is interesting. Wonder if it functions and how. Looks like someone made a semi auto using the frame and trigger group of a revolver and the slide is blown back to re cock the hammer.

I think it could work.
revolver grip and trigger.
Looks like a Winchester 94 type of hammer and chamber area to me, and that part beneath the barrel- either it's under spring-tension to chamber the next rd as a semiauto, or it's possibly a pump. I bet it can handle some big cartridges.
Whatever it is, it's not the most efficient design, but the coolness factor is off the charts. I'd take it to the range!

Here is one of the worst milsurp chop jobs I've ever seen. The gun was originally an Enfield No4 Mk1T sniper rifle.

Saw two more bubba'd Enfields in the same visit.
First was a No1 with a heaviliy sanded stock that had also been bleached or attacked with easy off. Real shame as it had Iraqi markings.
Second was a Maltby built No4 Mk1 mismarked as a Mk1* and then upgraded and marked Mk1*/3. Some fool had cut back the original wood that was was stamped matching to the gun. Abominal thing to do to an unusual rifle.

1898 Krag rifle in .30 Government that somebody rebarreled and cut to 19":
Probably why it was only $140 at the gun shop. Came with 2.5 boxes of cartridges, too. I had fun shooting in in a club 3-gun match.
Restoring it would start with $200 for a barrel. So no, not unless I get flush to a stupid level.

I got this Winchester Model of 1917 that had the darndest custom stock I'd ever seen. I'm guessing a high school shop project when you could still do such things. I have since restored it to it's original appearance.. I did keep the stock just for fun.

I don't have any photos handy, but a couple years back I picked up an 1891 Argentine Mauser (Ludwig Lowe) for my son. I was fascinated by the antique status, that it could be shipped directly to the house without a license (seller just wanted proof of age). All parts seem to match, it's in pretty good condition, it's a nice shooter (thanks PPU for still making this rd)... but the stock was sawed off to sporterize it. No bands, no handguard etc. Wasn't even a smoothed cut, it was a straight cut right where the middle band would be.
Someone told me these were done like that long ago and sold as deer rifles.
Thankfully, I just recently came across a used and complete stock, and have picked up just about all the hardware to restore it. Right now, all I need are the endcap front screws, and a sling.

1-1917, I have to say that rifle stock is by fat the most ugly rifle stock I have ever seen, maybe previous owner's wife did it after he made her angry.

I like to find the Bubba that did this to my "S" prefix.
Sanded the diamond magnas smooth, filed the back side of the front sight and inserted some sort of material at the apex of the blade.

Buford57, the pistol is not worth anything to purists, to the the other half of buyers the historical provenance has the pistol valued at over $3500 by one of the most respected members of the SWCA on this site, he is also a nationally known seller of fine guns.

How about a Type 99 Japanese rifle that has had the barrel set back and rechambered to .308 Winchester? I've taken a photo of the modified rifle next to an original Type 99 to show how the barrel shoulder was removed to set back the barrel enough for the reamer to "clean-up" the original 7.7 chamber. Without the shoulder on the barrel I can't figure out how the builder tightened the barrel/receiver threads together (no cross pins or screws) but its in there tight. Head space is good; its been fired with M80 ball and commercial ammo without any issues. Accuracy is so-so because of the undersized bullet diameter. Somebody spent some time on this old Arisaka!

That magna ported .38 reminded me of one of my creations! I picked up a 29-2 with an 8 3/8" barrel. The barrel had a suspicious ring around it so I did the logical thing: cut it to 4.5". Looking back on it, I wish I had gone 5" as it would have centered the barrel stamp......

And one I didn't do myself. I found this .455/.45 Colt in a local shop about 10 years? ago. The price was $250, and although it doesn't look like much its a great shooter (in .45. Never tried any .455 in it). Not sure if it qualifies as a bubba but its modified I guess.

I have a very nice hack saw. This is my Win 1200. It was cheap in the used shotgun rack, 150 bucks if I recall. I really wanted a Defender model but couldn't find one at the time. Later when I did find a real one, the homemade one is the one I decided to keep. I should probably put a front bead back on it, just never got around to it yet.

Wow most of these guns I would not consider "Bubba" branded and made at all. Most of these guns are quite nice! I on the other hand have seen some really bad gunsmith guns in my time. Most of the "Bubbas" Ive seen have had trigger and safety jobs done on them that make them very unsafe.

Winchester 1892 Bubba'd
I was shooting my Winchester 1892 sporting rifle [38 WFC] this morning & realized it is a Bubba gun. It shoots accurately, has nice bore & rifling, the rare 3 leaf sight on rear & a Rocky Mountain front sight. The previous owner decided to clean all the "old patina" off the metal parts before selling to the LGS I purchased it from. Turned a valuable collectible rifle into a $600 shooter for me to buy.

Understood. I'm still waiting on my sarcasm font. I am in the category that considers custom work by a master craftsman and provenance to a historically significant former owner and user a plus. I'm just not in the category that can afford to do more than appreciate it.

This rifle is a German Mauser that is a 25-06 and was customized by the Colorado school of trades. I couldn't past it up for $500 and it came with a Leupold Vari x3 3x9x40mm scope. Ther scope in the pictures is a Redfield 3x9x40mm as I mounted the Leupold on a different rifle.

I picked up a 1900 Swede oberndorf 6.5mm m96 Mauser all matching numbers. Bubba shortened the 29” barrel to 23”. I want a Swede Mauser for the grandson to hunt with. Again it needs finishing.
How does bubba do it he gets the all matching numbered metal and wood guns to butcher up.

There are more, but I am too tired to try and find the rest of the pictures. You know, Model 940s opened up for 38Super or CZ style pistols changed over to 9x23 Winchester or a Marlin Camp 356 now chambered for the Smith and Wesson 356TSW, etc, etc, etc. |
Geez CS10? Is that thing shootable at all? Reminds me of the the video i saw a AMT backup 45 turned full auto

I got one of these Mausers turned sporter... Mine is a K98 8mm from 1943 if I remember correctly. Someone rubbed off the Nazi markings for some goofy reason...

I had a Winchester Ranger that was given to me. Had that thing for ever and seemed like a very good shotgun. Yes bubba got to hackin that guy up wit da bubba saw. looked good for a hacker job... Bubba even blued the barrel again! Sweet!

Apparently, if you take the original (but modified) stock off a gun, and replace it with an unmodified stock from a completely different gun, you have now restored its originality and history.
Sorry - the modified "Bubba-ized" stock is part of the history of the rifle. In that state it probably fired more rounds and served more of a purpose than it did in it original guise, where it most likely sat in a warehouse or armory for several decades, until Bubba got it.
"Bubba" was us, or our Dads, or Granddads, or Uncles. They paid a small amount for a gun that they then suited to their needs, probably using an article in the American Rifleman or Guns as a guide.
I like these old guns just they way they wound up.

I have to agree with you on that... Theres a million gazillion military surplus rifles out there i dont get what the big deal is. Though on the other hand im not very fond of bubba smithing stuff to where its unsafe or serves no good purpose whatsoever either...

Miller was alive when the hearing took place in March of 1939. Most authors attribute the absence of the defendant and his counsel as a financial issue
