I know that the current thinking is to put that off-hand thumb way out along the slide, but I've never adopted that method of grip. I certainly wouldn't want to shoot a S&W 500 with that grip, covering the barrel/ cylinder gap with my hand! I had to adapt my grip style for my EDC, a Kahr CM9, so as not to inadvertently engage the slide stop. I have sympathy for oversized and undersized folks and their problems getting things to fit. Having said that, not all sizes or shooting techniques fit all circumstances or firearms. We can add on certain things or otherwise have guns customized to some degree to make them work better for us, but in the end we must train with and adjust to the gun. If it can't be done, then one has to look elsewhere. From what I have seen, it looks like this pistol will work for the vast majority of folks. Like everything else in life everything, including doorways are made for the "average" person.

I can't see how one could call the SIG an upgrade from a Shield. (And I have neither ...)

I own none of the two, but two reasons I see it an upgrade, from what I gather, are superior trigger action and increased magazine capacity with smaller size.

I have the Shield 9 and 45. The 9 has 3 mags. The mags hold 9/10/10 rounds (Magguts zeespring's). I have had the Shield platform for over 5 years and trust it completely..So I also do not see the 365 as an upgrade...

Love my Shields but on my hip is the Sig P365, riding in a Sticky and 124 Gr HST +P
13 of them

...and smaller than the Shield...significantly. Hard not to like.
1005 rounds through ....no issues.

Love my Shield but an even easier pistol to conceal AND holds more rounds without aftermarket parts is appealing. I'll have to wait a while before I can get my mitts on one.

I heard when the G43 first came out it was a big deal as well-- how long before it was more readily available?

The 365 may or may not be a good pistol. I think the verdict is still out. Personally, I would not give up a sure thing for an unproven model.

I finally got to handle a Sig p365 today and wasn't all that impressed, especially considering the nonnegotiable $700 price tag on it. While it's amazing they squeezed 10 rounds into that tiny grip, I found the grip to actually be too small and it just didn't fit my hand well. I simply could not get a high, tight hold on it like I can on some other weapons. There was always a fairly substantial gap between the web of my hand and the frame no matter how I gripped it which made it feel top heavy, unstable and unbalanced. This just applies to my specific hand shape since others may have the complete opposite fit and I didn't actually shoot it for a definitive opinion. I also found the mag release extremely difficult to activate and finicky(at least on my example). I don't want a mag release that is overly large or too easily activated on a carry gun, but this one went too far the other way. I also compared it with the Glock 42 & 43 and found the G42 to be an extremely good fit for me and it felt significantly smaller and lighter compared to the p365 and G43. A much greater difference than the specs on paper would indicate IMO. I've never really been a fan of .380, but I think I'm actually going to pick up a G42.

Interesting to hear your experience with it. Yes I've seen places price gouging the 365, it's ridiculous. Since you're going towards a 42, is this your first CCW?

No, I usually carry a snub or a G26, but wanted another auto option mainly for when I'm in warmer climates.

For the $700 Sig you could get 2 shields, 2boxes of self defense ammo and a holster! Shield for the win!

With weapons we all have to do what satisfies a few things.....

our safety
our confidence in the weapon
our proficiency with the weapon
our budget restraints
our needs (does the weapon meet them)....

If the 365 does that for you....indeed go for it.....
The Shields have done that for me for over 5 years....so
I will not be buying a 365 so that's one more available for those who wish to have it......

People paying this kind of money for this gun are the "I can't wait", "I must have instant gratification" type. I've seen them advertised from $499.00 to $529.00. Not all were in stock but then again you would have to "Wait" for one. It's much like when the Shield came out I paid if I remember correctly $389.00 for mine, but there were plenty available. Look where the pricing on them went. I'm sure when Sig catches up on production this will wind up being a mid $400.00 gun. For me I'm interested, but I'll wait and see where the pricing goes, and after I get to handle one.

Heaven forbid, if I ever have to fire my handgun in self-defense, I think the last thing that I'll be concerned about is how much I spent for the handgun and how much it will cost me to replace it. Someone once said that there is a law suit attached to every round fired in a self-defense situation. There are compromises in EDC handguns, but within reason, cost isn't one of them. If it were, I suppose that I'd carry the cheapest functioning handgun I could find.

If you haven't actually shot a G42, I suggest renting one at a range and running a box of ammo through it. I did that a couple of months ago, and I was surprised and disappointed by how inaccurate it was. The similarly sized SIG P238 I tried was much better. Maybe the G42 will shoot accurately for you, but it's always good to check it out first.

I don't think the MSRP will change. S&W is just lower priced overall. The Glock 43 is around the price of a 365 and it is just as popular as the Shield.

My son picked up a P365 last week and we compared it to our Shields (we both have 9s and he also has a 45). We were very surprised by how the P365 fit our hands. The palms of our hands touch our Shields from the beavertails to the end of the grip frames. The grip of the P365 is curved so that only about the top half of the backstrap touched our palms, which made the P365 feel very unsecure.

Same here. Even if I did buy another gun, it wouldn't be a replacement of my Shield-9 V1.0. It does everything I need it to do - fire everything, everytime - all original stock components except I added leather grip panels. It is a defense/close combat pistol and doesn't need precision sights or a feather trigger. Any additional money would likely go to a CZ-75 Compact. But it still would not replace the Shield in my belt.

Some things that separate the 365 from the others is dovetailed metal front sight, and it is a Nite Sight. I'm not bashing the other two, just showing that there is not a direct comparison when considering price point.

Despite not liking how it felt in my hand, I'd still like to shoot one since being comfortable in the hand isn't an accurate indication of how it shoots for a given individual.

I am still reading continuing problems with the p365 on the sig forums, so it would be some time before I'd seriously consider purchasing one and I'd have to certain the issues are corrected.

The trigger was also shorter and lighter than I prefer for a defense weapon, so that could be a deal breaker for me, especially if there are no acceptable options to change it. One thing I do really like about Glocks is that the trigger is easily modified DIY with OEM parts.

Two big problems presented.
1) It is a new model, and buy a new model anything is often not prudent. A year or two of hard use by plenty of others is a good idea. I've had this experience with a semi-tractor (first year Mack CH) and a car (first year Ford Focus).

2) After the 320 debacle, which is still rippling out and a long way from resolved, I am among many who are concerned enough about Sig QC/QA and honesty/integrity that I would not buy anything from them at this point. This has been discussed at length on another forum that is populated mostly by hard use military and LE folks, and the conclusion is pretty ugly. I have friends who have been involved in testing and review in several settings, and their reports are not good. Remember that it utterly failed the FBI testing, and the Army lowered the standard so the 320 could pass.

While I don't have a use for a Shield at this time, there is no question in my mind that if a use arose for which it was a good fit, I would have no real qualms about buying one.

Meh. Since the inception of the internet, people like to be noticed and complaining is a sure way to get noticed. There is always a tendency for some folks to "pile on" as well. I don't see the P320 as being a debacle. I have over a thousand rounds through mine (my only Sig) without any problems. It is a good host for my suppressor, as well. Sig handled the trigger upgrade to my satisfaction. You do have a point that new pistols, including the perfect Glocks have had problems. Some older pistols weren't drop safe, but of course there wasn't the big ***** storm, because Al Gore hadn't yet invented the internet. I like to always take everything with a grain of salt. There are a lot of folks on the internet who have very little experience with firearms, but like to post. I'm sure that there have been some people who have had problems, because anything mechanical can have failures, but with reports of some rental P365's going over 4,000 rounds without any significant problems, I think the new pistol is showing itself as a good solid handgun, in general. Not everyone is going to like every pistol on the market because, well people are different. When I get my P 365, I'll make my own conclusions as to whether or not it'll be my EDC. I do wonder if there are any anti-gun groups spreading untruths to "bring down" another firearm manufacturer.

My perspective is that the opposite is true with more people ignoring the problems and making excuses. I watched another review today where the shooter had a malfunctioned and failed to even mention it. The p365 has been plagued with ongoing problems since it's release. Sig didn't halt production for no reason. Considering some the abnormal wear I'm still seeing along with reports of broken strikers and mag follower problems, I'm not so sure they don't need to halt production again.

Valid point as to some events. However, the people to whom I am referring are well respected professionals in the firearms industry, some of whom I have known for years, and the forum on which the discussion was had is not tolerant of the kind of idiocy to which you refer. The experience I had with buying a brand new Sig (239) a few years ago was telling - it was so far from what I had ordered that the dealer refused it. I bought a used one a couple years ago, and it serves its purpose ... but most of the Sigs I would consider if I cared for one would be the older German made ones.

I'm not a Sig fan, but the P365 looks like a game changer. If I shoot it a lot and it functions reliably, is accurate, controllable and has a decent trigger it will be my EDC. I'll rely on the internet for stupid pet tricks. BTW, I owned a Glock, but it wasn't for me, although I think it is a very good pistol, despite the reports of KABOOMS! I'm thinking that people are taking relatively small things and blowing them way out of proportion. It seems like the current negative trend regarding just about everything in today's society.

I have 3 Glocks and they do the job fine, but there are Glocks I would not own under any condition or allow as duty weapons. The kabooms are related to those models, but a more a result of unacceptable handling practices (chambering a round more than once).

One must of course be careful to vet information sources, but the forum and population to which I am referring was also several years ahead of the fraud action for all of the flaws in EoTechs. A lot of folks were naysayers about that set of problems, too.

The 365 grip is tiny. I have beefed up my Shield grip a bit and like it a lot.

Gf and I have a Shield each, we have 1 365 and another on the way, and she's ready to sell hers. I don't think I will be but will just be another option for me.

OP: Have you decided?

I put my name on two different dealer's lists as soon as I learned of the P365. I figured I'd either like it or flip it when I actually got the chance to hold one and eventually fire it. Although I'm also a Shield owner/lover, I was intrigued by what the Sig appears to offer.

Fast forward from January to a couple weeks ago and I had a chance to meet a prominent forum member at a LGS. They had a demo P365 and I got the first chance to feel and dry fire it. I liked it at first glance. However, until I get mine home (should be around 12 hours from now), compare it to my Shield 2.0, and others that I love and finally shoot it; who knows?

I love my Shield, but thought of *replacing it for the P365 before even holding one.

Got my hands on a P365 and did just as well on it's (basically) first range day.

Both are winners, can't go wrong either way. With that said, I can't see myself getting rid of the Shield. The worst that would happen is I shoot the P365 more often and the Shield gets neglected.

ak, by saying "upgrade" to the 365, you are saying the 365 is superior to the Shield.

The 365 has been around for about 15 minutes.

If I were you, I'd let the guys who just have to have the "latest and greatest" buy them first.

Let them be your lab rats.

I'd think twice about buying a pistol which was designed around its magazine. Something about that fact gives me great pause.

My son bought a P365, decided it was not what he wanted as much as he had thought, and is back to his Shield.

Good question. Out of the box the P365 has a small grip which was my main gripe with it.

Though, the grip is one of the first things you compromise for concealability.

As @greeenteeee said, the problem was mainly with the grip.

The following comparative photo from Guns and Ammo shows where the grips of the P365 and Shield differ (emphasis added). The Shield's grip made contact with the palm of the hand over its entire length. The P365's grip only made contact with the palm of the hand for the upper half of its length.

I can understand your son's point....for me the Shield grip is
just plain perfect. The gun fits like a glove (9 & 45)....

I am kinda surprised at how many people pre-ordered the 365 without ever touching one, much less shooting one.....Large hands persons are going to find the 365 difficult to
adjust to...not that they can't change there grip style to adapt but it's going to be different for sure......I think there may be more than a few who might decide they rushed in to soon..time will tell.....

When I can't decide, I often adopt both and let it work out over time.

I'd like one, but not for MSRP. If/when they ever lose their "unicorn" status, I'll pick one up.

For now, I have two Shield 9's that I carry and have no plans to ever sell.

As shown previously, I modded the Shield grip after owning it for some time and my shooting with it improved dramatically. Only the 2nd range day w/ the 365 but I have already been experimenting with building up the backstrap.

It is just friction tape and a bike tube wrapped over it. Once I've built it up just the way I like it, I can replace it with talon grips for a more "finished" or permanent look.

I haven't shot it without anything over the grip because the bottom of it cuts into my palm. That's my complaint vs the Shield, but with that said the Shield has a larger grip. Shootability vs concealability.

Thumbs up

My Shield did not feel proper with either the 7 or 8 rd. mag so i put a Strike EMP on the 7 rd mags and now my Shield feels great in the Web of my palm.

I have med/small hands but the 365 even with a 12 rd. mag did/does not feel comfortable in the Web of my Palm.

So for me the 365 is to small for EDC but to big for a back-up!

Will i still get 1, i don't know could have had 1 for $499. butdid not get it.

Don't think all issues are fixed but its a New gun and sadly takes time to fix the bugs, just as the Shield had many issues when it came out!

I too have had my 365 for a little more than a week. I’ve run about 750 rounds through it without any problems. I wear a size xxl gloves and and actually like the grip of the 365. I like that I feel like I ha e a more stable purchase on the gun. This coming from also owning a shield 2.0 and a Glock 43.

The shield has been my edc bc I like it more than the 43 and am more accurate Ruth the shield. I won’t say that the 365 outshoot the shield, but it’s on par with it. Both FOR ME shoot better than the 43, and I shoot the Glock 26 fantastic.

It’s an amazing package for size and round count. I like it a lot. It’s been my edc since putting 500 worry free rounds through. I’m not seeing any unusual wearing on the sig. this is my first sig, I own many smiths and glocks, but this is a sweet little package with a lot of rounds, especially for its size.

As to the mags, I love the 12 round for when shooting and doing drills but prefer the 10 round flush mag for carry.

Best of luck for those getting their hands on one and hope it too is worry free.

Rick

This is one of those questions that must be answered by each individual, for whatever reasons seem more important to them.

Now, unless the new bill in committee (CA state) to repeal the state's Roster of handguns that can be sold somehow passes and is signed, this is a moot point for me. Since I no longer qualify for the peace officer exemption for buying guns not on the state's roster, I won't be buying one.

However, having been an unwitting Beta-tester for a new model pistol in the past, I've long since decided that I'd just as soon give any new pistol design at good year's successful production time before looking at it for myself.

Notwithstanding the Beat-tester concern, though, after many years of continually buying new pistols, justifying them as being used for off-duty and firearms training equipment, I've lost my zeal for buying new guns just because they appear to have some minor "advantage" or improved feature. I prefer them to have a significant advantage over what I already own ... or, at least be a "duplicate" of something I already own and have found to have a lot of merit for its intended role.

If the Shield 9's 7/8+1 mags and topped-up capacity is something someone considers to be a "significant disadvantage" compared to a 10+1 option? Hey, it's their money and their choice on how to spend it.

Whenever I've been asked the seemingly inevitable question about "capacity" by some of the people I've helped train over the years I've served as a LE firearms instructor, I usually respond with a question of how satisfied that person might be with their just demonstrated "results" during some training drill or qual scenario. In other words, were they satisfied they were as competent and skilled as they wished to be in getting those first 1-3 hits on a threat, or 2-6 hits spread among 2-3 threats (for the really "busy" scenarios that might have more than 2 recognizable threat targets).

If they acknowledge they aren't as comfortable with their skills-set and abilities as they wished, I ask them if they're hoping more ammo capacity will somehow "make up" for their unsatisfactory skill levels? (A "loaded" question, but not an impractical or irrelevant one, I think.)

Just because they may have the potential ability to shoot 2-3 more rounds before having to again load isn't exactly an "ideal substitute" to spending more time working on getting more skilled at getting those first 1-5 hits.

Now, there's nothing "wrong" with wanting "more" of something. I remember when Colt used to use the sales pitch that their Dick Special .38 snub had 20% more ammunition than the S&W Chiefs Special, because it held 6 rounds instead of 5. Some early 1911 aficionados seemed to flock to the idea of going from 7rd to 8rd mags (which wasn't always what they wanted after having feeding issues with some early 8rd designs).

One of the first things some eager Glock G43 buyers wanted was ... more rounds in their magazines. They wanted +1 & +2 extensions. They wanted a small, slim single stack gun to essentially have the mag capacity of a double stack. You just can't please some folks.

Now, me? Well, let's just say that if I were to return to active duty tomorrow, and could once again enjoy the peace officer exemption for buying off-roster guns ... I'd still wait another several months until SIG has put between 250,000-500,000 P365's out in the hands of shooters, and those shooters have had a chance to wring them out for a little while. Nowadays I prefer for others to be my eager Beat-testers,

Gotta suit yourself, though, It's your money. And if you're planning to carry it as an actual dedicated defensive carry weapon, it's your life.

That always been the issue with plastic pistols and only addressed rather recently, i.e. one size doesn't fit all. Even with Sig grip different size grip modules and other brands' exchangeable backstraps, there is still something missing. Oh for the days when we could special order wood grips to suit us!

This is exactly why I will not buy a handgun which I have not shot (rented/tried someone else's, etc) first.

Sometimes my LGS/Range gets a demo/rental unit from the Manufacturer right away, sometimes they wait for a trade-in. I can wait. My pockets have Nomex lining to keep my money from burning a hole in them.

Question

Seems that 99% of all the reviews if the latest version of the 365 still has some issues like slide not locking open after last test. In the vid posted it did not lock back 2X out of 100 rounds.

In another new vid by TFB during 500 shots it did not lock back 3 X and also lately there have been about 6 reports of the firing pin breaking after 150 rounds.

After the vid i listed the guy did put adhesive grips on his gun to have more/better grip.

Thoughts on causes of slide not locking back on empty mag?

Weak mag springs, bad follower, weak slide stop spring or possibly even a prob with the RGRod .

Had similar issue with slide never locking back on a NIB APX 21 rd. mag due to weak spring and had to return 2 before i got a good 1 but on this mag its a known issue.

If they ever make a +2 mag extension for the 12 rd. mag and if issues ever get solved i may get 1???????

I have been reading and watching the threads and reports on the 365 and here are my thoughts. I would not buy one until it has been out for at least 6 months without reports of issues.
I have not had a single failure from my Shield and have lots of confidence in it, especially for my CC weapon. With that said, a reliable, higher capacity and smaller CC weapon that my Shield....I will be interested down the road. However, I would be even more interested if it were a Shield version of the 365!
