Default Ruger Lipsey GP 100...............

......saw the ad for one of these and thought I would give the 327 Magnum version a try.

First impression both good and not so good. Part of it I am sure is based on my long term preference for older Smith revolvers.

Blue steel double action 7 shot 5 inch barrel topped with serrations, and a gold bead post. White outline rear sight. A target style Walnut? Grip.

Not so good the non Smith feel of the action and a pair of grips that are loose.

Called Ruger when I unboxed and felt the play in the grips. They have another set in the mail to me. If they mount solid I will feel better about the revolver.

Some great features that I wish were available in a non lock S&W.

Range report after the other grips come in.

This model is also available in .,357 Magnum, and .44 Special.

I have been thinking of getting one of those revolvers but Ruger GP100's are usually nose heavy with the full lug barrel. Since this is half lug barrel, do you feel it is nose heavy or more like a 6" N frame Smith? Thanks for the info.

It does not feel nose heavy, Smith like in that regard.

Here is a pic of mine ... I have two of the three. Top is .44 special 5-shot, bottom is .327 Fed Mag 7-shot.

With the Rugers the factory triggers are a little inconsistent ... on mine, the .327 has a surprisingly good trigger, but the .44 has a fairly heavy trigger, although it breaks cleanly. Neither trigger is as good out of the box as a typical S&W, but they can be cleaned up easily.

Any problems with the fit of your grips?

Grips are solid on both of mine. I have heard of others with problems, over on the Ruger forum. Some reported one of the locator pins was missing.

Which Ruger board are you on, dot com or dot Net? Both are good, but .net seems to me to have better info and more photos.

The grips on the guns shown look very comfortable.

I don't see why people buy .327's. The hot .32 rounds were never a big success, the .32-20 having fared best. But even it is long obsolete; couldn't compete with other ammo.

I think hot .32's are too much for really small game and not enough for the bigger stuff.

If made in stainless and chambered for .357 Magnum, these Lipsey guns would make a lot of sense.

Does not Larry. I like the balance.

I’m on the dot Net forum.

.32 is one of my favorite calibers ... great at the range, and an extra shot in the J-frame sizes. I reload, which keeps ammo affordable and available.

Some folks like blued guns ... I have some of each but will usually pick blued guns and wood grips over stainless and rubber. The look of the stainless GP100 never really called to me like these did.

I don’t get Rugers obsession wit .32 mags, either. They were big into the H&R version as well.

Reloading .32-20 for handguns holds no interest for me. In a rifle it would make sense, like a lever gun or better yet a rook-style single shot.

What would really be cool on the GP platform would be a 10mm. Clements is already doing conversions.

Or, take the .375 Super Mag and shorted it to .357 case length. That could be done on the L-frame as well.

Something bigger on a medium frame that doesn’t reduce it to 5-rounds,

Yeppers, the first thing I thought when I saw those was that they were trying to recreate the vibe of an older Schmidt, especially with the stocks. I'd bet if Ruger made it a regular item they'd sell more then the usual type, maybe to folks who would rather have a S&W but can't stand the MIM, safety lock, etc.

While I love my older Smiths, I wouldn't buy a new one except maybe a .22. Apologies to the brand, but when it comes to hard magnum use I'd buy a GP100 before a modern L Frame. These Lipsey's ones look just the ticket.

ETA: Standing by for the range report!
