Default Turnbull Rugers

Has anybody seen the Turnbull Rugers? Absolutely breathtaking! If I had some extra money lying around I would buy one of the .22 pistols. The GP100 is spectacular!

Turnbull's work is gorgeous. Got a chance to handle a Navy Arms Winchester with the Turnbull treatment. Salesman almost had to pry it from my fingers.

I agree about the GP100, although I'd like to see some high quality wood stocks on it. My opinion is the rubber doesn't compliment the case hardening and high polish blue at all. But still...at only $995, that's a good price for a custom finished high quality revolver.

I've been tempted to get one of the MkIV 22/45's with the case coloring. The only thing is it comes with the regular plastic grips and I think a nice set of wood grips would really pop.

A customer came into our range with three Turnbull 22/45's ( I believe they were all consecutive ser#'s. Instant family heirlooms.

WOW!!! Spectacular! Those were definitely worth the wait! Never seen a Ruger so beautiful in all my life. They really need to get rid of those rubber grips though. Could you imagine that gun with a nice pair of Sambar Stag or Ivory grips? A Redhawk looks like a tank, but it would just be a larger canvas for Turnbull to do his magic.

Does that include the price of the gun, or is that the cost if you send him your gun?

That's a really good question. I get the impression that these are new production guns that Turnbull buys from manufacturers, then finishes them to their specs.

If you look at Turnbull's website, you can find lots of information.

In one section, Doug Turnbull is talking about "new products for 2018", and the GP100 and the Ruger Mark IV are both mentioned as "new products". This is one reason I believe they buy the guns, finish them, then sell them to users/collectors.

One of the rifles they offer as "finished" is the Winchester 1873. Well, it's one of those made by Miroku, not an original '73.

As to whether they'd accept an NIB Mark IV from a customer for their special finishing, I don't know. You could ask them.

Turnbull has always been very prompt in replying to e-mails that I've sent them.

Their website is actually a feast for any gun lover's eyes, and some of the miracle restoration work is...well, miraculous. I usually look at restoration work with a bit of a jaundiced eye, but Turnbull's stuff is the crème de la crème.

Well, I wouldn't go that far.

What I think Turnbull should do on a gun finished at this level, is polish off that "Read the Instruction Manual" rollmark on the GP100's barrel. And on any other gun they do, wherever the rollmark is located.

I've always had an aversion to guns...not just Rugers...that tell me with an external rollmark or other marking that I have to read the manual before using it.

It's hard to escape those warnings in todays litigious society, but any time I'm buying Rugers, I look for the older pre-warning guns.

I had the 22 Mark IV in my hands at the NRA show last year, and talked with Doug a long time. Yes, he buys these new from Ruger and does his caseharding. These are some of the most beautiful pistols I have ever held in my hand. Almost bought one last year, and as of now, have not purchased one. Yes they are an heirloom to hand down to family. For only a few hundred dollars over a regular one. They are new in the box, unfired current production guns.

Thanks for clearing that up.

I can't tell from the photos, but since you had one in your hands, am I correct in thinking he doesn't put the "Turning Bull" Turnbull logo stamp on the guns anywhere?

I've never found the GP100 to be attractive, but that treatment changes things a lot.

It does, doesn't it? The case hardening/pinto treatment somehow makes it look less bulky (grotesque). The case hardening visually breaks up the strong angles of the frame. That's why I say putting some nice checkered targets on it would be another improvement. And they'd have to have just the right finish on them to go with the revolver's color scheme. And as someone else says, some sambar stag, or even elk antler stags with some good (but not too much) bark would complete the look.

They put the logo on the right side of the barrel. Makes a great looking pistol.

Another example of Turnbull's finish and coloring on an old Ruger flat top. They nitre blued every screw and even the pin holding the rear sight in place on this gun.

...Do it...Do it...Do it...Do it! Aren't we a bad influence? We encourage you to spend money here.

In all seriousness, thank you for posting. I was unaware of these. Very nice. I got one turnbull just by dumb luck. Bought a heritage series S&W because they were not selling at a local shop--nobody wanted them(!)--at a good price. Came to find out, it is marked as case colored by the artist.

Turnbull's shop is about 25 minutes from here.
Doug is a really cool, interesting guy. He and his guys put out some true drool-inducing stuff. Their restoration work is second to none.

Turnbull made this 1911. The finish is second to none. The minute I picked it up I knew it was going home with me
This will not be my last gun that Turnbull has worked on

I saw the Ruger MKIV with his finish at an Ohio Gun Collectors show. Ordered one the next day. Turns an ordinary run of the mill .22 into a collector gun that you can still shoot and enjoy.

I ordered a MKIV Target in February. Got an e-mail about them and was on the phone the next day putting in my order.

Congrats for all the love you guys have for Turnbull. I wouldn't go so far as calling these "instant collectibles/heirlooms" though. Modern guns with modern cosmetic jazz added? Hate to be negative, but lipstick on a pig can only do so much, and they are still modern Rugers at heart.

Turnbull work, especially his case color hardening is subjective. I personally don't like any of it and don't think it matches the old time cch he is often "supposed" to be achieving. So the weapons don't even look right. Just one man's opinion.

Enjoy what you like though. The GP100 doesn't look too bad though, but the price kills it.

Thanks again to CAJUNLAWYER for hurting my wallet. The GP100 came in last week and in the meantime, I ordered some black walnut stocks to replace the Hogues.

GP100 and Carruther's Performance Knives HDFK.

The 1895 came in last week but it was damaged in shipping. Multiple stock fractures. Their customer service is expediting another one.

Love the Ruger.

Did they drag the rifle behind the truck all the way to your place? Really, how does that kinda damage get done?

Default Turnbull Custom Ruger Super Blackhawk

Pictured below the Ruger Blackhawk 357/9MM convertible is a second year production Ruger Super Blackhawk I had Doug do for me a couple of years ago. The Super Blackhawk had a factory brass grip frame added with Sambar Stag Grips, and the frame and hammer were case colored, and all the small parts/screws were fire blued. Turnbull Restoration is about a 30 minute drive from where I live. I've known Doug for over 40 years. He has done several projects for me over the years. His shop's work is the best.
