Default Ruger SP-101 snubbie

Found this .357 mag SP-101 snubbie in the local ad in my hometown. I’ve never owned a Ruger wheelgun, but from what I hear, they are solid and reliable. He’s asking $475 and it’s been on there a couple weeks. Seems like a good buy even if I can’t really afford it right now. If I offer him $450 and he agrees, does that make it “too good to pass up?”

I own one, and paid a good bit more than that as used. I shoot it often, with 38sp +P. I'd have troubles with a diet of .357 (arthritis), but have put a dozen or so through it with good result.

$450 would be a good price in my opinion, and I would probably buy it at that point if everything is in good order.

You can send it to me for my birthday

I have a 3" that I really like. Seems like a decent deal to me.

Actually that’s not quite right. I have an LCR in .327 federal magnum that I forgot about.

I had one and they are good guns with enough heft to shoot full power magnums if you desire. The only reason I got rid of it is because I was feeling guilty about having so many revolvers (I have 4 J frames too). I traded it on a 629-3 classic 5"

I actually had 2 of them, my first one didn't shoot point of aim worth a dang so I sent it back and Ruger sent me a brand new gun. If you do go to look at it make sure the barrel is not canted. The first one I had did have a noticeably canted barrel that I didn't see when I first bought it. The second one shot perfectly and was capable of 3-4" groups at 25 yds

I still have a new 3" 327 with fixed sights that I haven't even shot yet

If the gun is less than five years old, Ruger will generally still do warranty work and pay the shipping for the current owner. At five years, you have to pay the fedex (recent experience).

They rebuilt one that I managed to break at the shop. No repair cost, just the shipping. Don't ask how I did that, I can break anything. Tools, marriages, rocks ....

I left a message and he called me back. He’s out of town until next weekend, but is going to give me first refusal on it when he returns. I didn’t even try to talk him down from $475 because I think it’s still a good deal. It has a front night sight, probably an XS big dot. No box or papers. Does the SP-101 fit in J frame holsters? That’s the big reason I haven’t carried the LCR much other than pocket carry.

Mine is old enough that I remember the price paid was $289.99 new. Great gun. Buds has them for $554 shipped. Grab a gun has it for $501 plus shipping. Cabellas has them for 629....... Me, I'd offer $400 and pay whatever he comes back at. -assuming good sondition of course!

My 640-1 fits loosely in my old SP-101 holster.

I bought a new one for my son on his 21st birthday. On one cylinder the trigger pull was extremely hard, nearly impossible to make it fire. I called Ruger and they said it sounded like a bad "D bushing" and to return for warranty. From the way they sounded on the phone they'd had the same conversation many times before... After it returned it was fine.

I've carried a SP-101 snub for the last 10 years on and off the job. They're very good guns. I own five SP-101's at present, both 2.25" and 3" versions. The SP-101 fits Detective Special holsters, but uses the same speedloaders as a J frame. All of mine have had the factory grip replaced with the Hogue monogrip. The Hogue is a big improvement if you plan to shoot the 101 much. Based on the last few I've seen for sale in my area (PA) I'd say $450-$475 is a fair price.

I just sold my 4.2" .357 to one of my guys at work (he got a sick deal). I loved the gun but stumbled across a mid 70s, mint 4" stainless Security Six for 275 bucks and it stole my heart! You can't go wrong with a Ruger wheelie. I like Caje's idea to hit him a bit low and see where he counters. You can put any savings to some leather because a j frame holster won't cut it with the SP 101.

Try Colt Detective Special or Cobra holsters, or just buy an SP-101 holster.

El Paso Saddlery can fix you up. For less money, Ruger's own leather is okay, if you aren't too demanding. Ruger has the holsters made for them by Triple K.

My SP has the three-inch bbl., a better choice for a small field gun that'll occasionally fire .357 ammo.

I think the grip inserts on the gun in question are nice ones from Chig's. Factor those into the price. Fairly nice wood. Chig's can supply MUCH nicer for a modest cost. I like the Ruger medallion.

Price is about average. Not a steal, but fair, especially with the fancy grip panels. See if he'll take $450.

The SP-101 is heavy, no pocket gun. Be prepared for that. But you wouldn't want it lighter, especially if firing heavy Plus P and .357 loads.

You and I think the same. It its a good price and I want it, I can enjoy the weapon without thinking I got it cheap. I never have been into "Haggling"

I have two of them. Good solid revolvers. They handle .357 magnum just fine. 38 special is a pleasure to shoot.

I have an SP-101 in .327 Federal. Agree that they are good solid guns, agree that the Hogue Monogrip is a good move. I have found the trigger to be very heavy, so I replaced the springs.

I have a Gemini Custom. Got the custom since the base price from Marc was $400 back in 03 and it saved me on shipping out the gun for the mods I wanted. Great shooting gun. Too heavy for 5 shots of +p but an excellent trainer for new shooters.

I had one for a while, the trigger is pretty heavy in double action compared to my S&Ws and Colts. It is built like a tank and can handle anything you can.
