Hi-Point .45s?
Just asking you more knowledged folks out there: I was looking at a LGS up here in PGH at their current stock on line. I just wondered if Hi-Point pistols are reliable enough to spend less than $200 for a new one. I've seen JHPs and JCPs, even on Bud's, for way under $200. Their web site says American made in Ohio, lifetime warranty, etc. Come with one mag., 9 + 1 in .45 auto. One JHP comes with a locking box. It's the most expensive at $190. They aren't pretty, look sort of top-heavy. Can't expect much for the money, but I wonder how they shoot? My 1911 (ATI) shoots good at 25 yards, but it's kind of heavy to carry. A lifetime warranty and pocket money for a full-sized .45 seems too good to pass up for a cheap shooter. Anyone know if these shoot okay? Thanks in advance and God Bless. Jeff T., PGH PA

My experience: if you have a variety of pistols, it will become the runt of the litter. With nothing bad to say about it, I'll only shoot occasionally to keep it loosened up. They are accurate and functional.

Plenty of people will report favorable experiences with Hi Point pistols, and I wish I could. There is a need for a decent, reliable, very inexpensive pistol.
But the fact is that the first and last Hi Point I bought, a 9mm, was without doubt the absolute worst excuse for a handgun I have ever handled. The trigger was horrible, as was the accuracy. It was huge and unwieldy; the size was no big deal, as I would never use such a thing for anything but home defense, but the handling characteristics were terrible. The slide was an absolute bear to rack, and I am not a small or wimpy guy. My wife couldn't pull the slide halfway back. In the time I had it, it mis-fed at least once on every magazine-full of ammo. The slide and magazine had edges so sharp that I cut myself on them, several times. I sent it back for warranty work -- twice. Both times, you couldn't tell anything had been done to it.
If anyone else reading this has had good luck with Hi Point pistols, I say you are blessed. But my experience will not allow me to recommend them in good conscience to anyone.

The only reason I don't own one is that Hi Point pistols are way too large for me to handle comfortably. Like with any other manufacturer, you can have a good experience or a bad experience, and for the price, why not give it a shot . . .

They might be ok, but they are fat, ugly pistols... even worse looking than a Block... I mean a Clunk... errrrm... a Glock! I just cannot bring myself to buy an ugly firearm.

I got a C-9 Hi-Point for 30 bucks from a police supply place. It had been taken as evidence but looked like it had never been used.
It shoots fine. Accuracy is so-so, but ok for what it would be used for. The sights are a good set up. The trigger is pretty bad, and since it is a blowback that big ugly slide slamming back and forth gives it much recoil than you’d expect from a 9mm.
But hey, its an American made pistol that fills the “have a gun” requirement for the price of a meal. I hear their customer service is good, but I have no experience with it myself.

Your 1911 is too bulky for comfortable carry so you are looking a HiPoint 45? I've owned 3 HiPoints, 4 if you count the carbine. All were bougth used, bought cheap, ugly, bulky and reliable. I still have the 9mm pistol and carbine. The pistol was vaccum packed with two boxes of ammo and lives under the seat of my truck, the carbine is our camping carbine.
Around Christmas I bought a SCCY 9mm on sale for <$200. It has proven reliable and easy to carry. Plus 9mm ammo is generally the least expensive center fire pistol ammo.
However IMHO you best bet is to look for sales of just about ANY LEO trade-in. You'll be better off in both the short and long run for just a little more money.

They are fine......
Competition and new manufacturing methods had increased the quality of the 'cheap' guns. The ones manufactured in the Philippines are pretty good.

If weight is a concern I doubt the highpoint will be better than a 1911. Although some people would rather be blind than look at one they seem to work. If not highpoint will fix yours or send you a new one no questions asked. It is the one to buy if it is going to get loaned, lost, stolen, ignored or otherwise abused. They sell new for about $ 170 , you can sell it used about $40 less. If you buy one you won't have .such to lose

Never shot a Hi Point, but I have tried a SCCY CPX-2 and I thought it was a great little gun.

The Hi-Point pistol is left at crime scenes more than any other firearm.
Hood rats love them.
Accurate,,,,meh.
Chicago PD has barrels of them.

The last CCW class I ran 2 showed up with HiPoints. We ran them thru 100 rds total for the course - 70 practice and 30 for qualification. Neither HiPoint completed the course.

I went to the gun shop today to hold & check out the 2 they had. I would never buy one. Felt like a brick taped to a T-square. Would not waste meal money on one! Thanks for all the input from you all. Jeff

Hello, former Hi-Point JHP45 owner chiming in. The only reason I did not hold onto mine is because I was in the "buy-sell-trade" phase of firearms enthusiasm.
Why did I purchase a Hi-Point JHP45? I purchased it because I was curious. For a while, pistols that had an overwhelmingly negative reaction on internet forums caught my attention. I was also just starting to learn to reload at the time. How bad could it be? I could test my reloaded ammo in it without worrying about destroying my Ruger SR1911.
Is everything said about the pistol on the internet true? Mostly. The Hi-Point JHP 45 is heavy. It has a zinc-alloy slide. It has a fixed barrel. The grip design had to have been inspired by a decent packing tape dispenser. The trigger and sights aren't great, but they do the job. Field stripping isn't quick and requires a pin punch. Is all of this truly horrible for a pistol that cost $150? No. What I can say is that as long as I held up my end of the marksmanship equation (as with any other pistol at any price point) the $150 Hi-Point JHP45 was both precise and accurate.

My first job out of college was in Shelby, Ohio just down the road from Mansfield where Hipoint is based. So, I am a bit biased. Fact is that there are many many videos on YouTube and reports on the net that these are actually reliable and rugged pistols, so they are the polar opposite in these areas than the Jennings cast zinc pistols that sell in a similar price range. However they are a straight Blowback design which means they feature distinctly heavier recoil springs and slides than a Locked Breech design. As a result you have a very heavy slide pull for the caliber and a pistol much havier than you might expect. In the 45 ACP I would expect you'll find the Highpoint is heavier than your 1911. IMO it should be considered for use as a House gun or a Truck Gun that you can put into a hiding spot and leave it for years.

I have always wondered how many of the people that talk bad about a Hi Point are using a plastic pistol. Just a thought. Larry

I can't help but think that buying a Hi-Point for self defense is a bit like buying the cheapest parachute at Walmart for sky diving.

I bought a 9mm several years ago just for grins and giggles. That thing worked like a champ. I put a bunch of rounds through it back when 9mm ammo was about 3-4 bucks a box. I think it was more than 1500 rounds. It malfunctioned six times, that I do remember, and four of those came out of one box of "range reload" ammo.
I finally sold it for more than I paid for it, and had a half dozen prospects lined up saying "I'll take if he doesn't." I should have asked more I suppose.
But if you're looking for something else because you think a 1911 is too bulky and heavy, a Hi-Point 45 ain't it. Those are bigger and heavier than the 9mm. Get one just to have a fun gun? Sure, why not. It's not like they're expensive, and if you don't like it, you can always sell it, trade it, or use it for a doorstop.

I don't see how anyone that works on the pistol line at Hi-Point can be proud of what they do for a living.
But if they are only " widgets " to you, I guess it doesn't matter.
