Default WILL THE IWI TAVOR 7 .308 BULLPUP BE THE AR15 5.56 KILLER?

Guys, I stopped by my local gun shop and talked to one of the gun counter sales rep. He is an Iraq war vet and was with the Marines. He said for Iraq, .308 is not necessary and maintained that the 5.56 with proper shot placement got the job done. He also said that the .308 was too heavy, not enough ammo or firepower, and if he was in Afghanistan yes a .308 with glass would be the weapon of choice.

While I do agree for closer quarters, the maximum effective range for a 55gr bullet to yaw and fragment has to be no less than 2800 fps so the max range out of a 16" barrel is 100 yards and for a 20" barrel 150 yards. I also know there are hollow points that will expand at 1400fps so that can make the AR15 effective range up to 350 yards. I think for all intensive purposes the 5.56 if loaded correctly is a very effective rifle for SHTF.

However, after seeing the reviews on the Tavor 7, it definitely seems to be an AR15 killer in every way possible. For starters the weight is mostly on the back and the muzzle brake makes this .308 one of the lightest recoiling .308 around. According to IWI and others, the recoil is really not bad at all and shooters were able to get on target fast. And yes of course the load out won't be as much as a 5.56 system but you only have to shoot the guy once, not 5 times like a 5.56.

Part of me does not want to buy the Tavor 7 because ammo is definitely more pricey, and the Tavor has a trigger weight of 5lbs to 6lbs which is not bad for close quarters but for good accuracy at 200 yards it would be a bad choice. The rifle twist on the Tavor 7 is 1/12 which is only suited for the lighter 168gr bullet so it kind of defeats the purpose of the .308

anyway what do you all think? Would you change over to the Tavor 7 or stick to the anemic 5.56?

Why not check out the POF Revolution, and have the best of both worlds?

I found nothing wrong with the "anemic" 5.56 round.
Care to stand in front of a target aboard Camp Pendleton and have a young Marine fire 1 round at you on the 500 yard line?

With a threat level III vest sure I would stand in front...lol....well at that range unless it hits a vital organ or spine or headshot it would not incapacitate fast enough. The .308 just seems so much better in eveyr way

308 is heavy and not normally in NATO supply chains unless you de-link ammo from belts. I dumped my M-14 after a month in Iraq and toted an M-4 because my M-14 wouldn't group and it was very hard to get good ammo.
AND bullpups are cool guns till you have a KB right by your face, head, and neck. Then they are whatever the mathematical antithesis of "cool" is.

This is good to know. I heard the M1A(civilian version of M14) requires a lot of maintenance to keep it accurate. I do agree the weight of the M1A is too heavy for my liking and why I felt the Tavor 7 was the perfect bridge to give one the best of both worlds
