Default Silk purse from sow's ear - making a usable grip set?

Several years ago I bought a two-piece "boot" grip set for Ruger SP101. It was so far from fitting that I abandoned the concept for SP101s unless a major manufacturer was its source. In short, SP101's OEM grip was what I used.

I have been having some health issues that leave me short tempered. Attacking my "stuff" bin to cull and destroy, I noticed the boot grip set. Using some rather odd tools, I have been investing time to make these things work. Examining the grip set installed what I see is:

- On the muzzle side, going around the grip's heel, and around the "back strap" upward to the height of assembly screw, grip set meets perfectly.

- Above the height of assembly screw to where grip set on back strap is supposed to meet SP101's double action or recoil hump (I don't really know what the correct name is for that area that is intended to maintain a constant grip during recoil from shot fired.) is a hairline space between grip panels that becomes large enough that I can fit the tip of a finger nail into it, but not enough to be able to pry apart the panels. I could separate them with a butter knife.

- Where grip set is supposed to meet the recoil hump, it does not. There is a space close to, but less than, the thickness of a dime's edge.

I own no revolver whose two-piece grip set is intended to fit together, so I have no idea whether this grip set I am attempting to "un-Bubba" is, in fact, what is normal for two-piece grip sets. I have no idea whether the poorly fitted back strap-recoil hump area will bite the webbing of my hand during recoil. And for at least the next ten days, I'll have no opportunity to shoot 357 Magnum or Remington "FBI" 38 Special ammunition to confirm my job as acceptable or not for shooting. Aesthetically, it's still a poorly fitted grip set. But if it allows me to keep control of the revolver, the grip set is acceptable for me.

The grip set leaves no "printing" when holstered - that is, it renders the SP101 invisible beneath a buttoned double breasted suit coat. And with coat off and me wearing the revolver in shade or indoor lighting that is not bright, the holstered revolver is difficult to notice. Were I to find it necessary, I have about 3/16-inch of wood that can be removed from grip set's heel without creating a new problem for its fit.

Other than shooting the revolver, what do I need to do - that I am able to do - not knowing what I'm doing in the first place?

While photographs would be helpful, I have no camera or cell phone or scanner with which to create them.
