Default Savage MKII Target Rifle

I’m at the age where it’s harder and harder to get down in the prone position but I just bought a couple of target rifles; (I guess I’m wanting to try to relive my youth). This rifle is a Savage Mk II FVT in .22 LR. It comes with a globe front sight with a set of inserts and a William receiver sight with one aperture. The factory trigger breaks at a shade over 2 pounds. The length of pull on the stock looks short but measures 13 inches.

I zeroed it a 30 yards on an indoor range with some old standard velocity ammo and I’m pretty happy with the groups I’m getting. I didn’t think I’d like the ‘plastic’ stock but it’s not bad!

Nice! Good shooting. I have the fvsr version and was also pleased with its accuracy especially for the price. After a while I ended up replacing the stock with a Boyd's, bedding it and pouring compound in the trigger area to beef it up.

You certainly should be pleased with those groups, and with that fine rifle. That's a great find.

I first started competing in small bore rifle in the 60’s, as a Boy Scout. So I understand perfectly about shooting from positions nowadays. I think your savage is a “ best bang for the buck” modern rendition of the classic small bore target rifle.
The rifle and shooter certainly can get the job done. Enjoy your rifle and good luck reliving your youth.

Savage MkII rifles with the bull barrel can be "very" accurate. I bought an FV and eventually realized that the stock was keeping it from being what it could be. There is just too much flex in their plastic stocks. I replaced it with a BT stock and the difference was amazing. Then I pillar bedded it so I could put more torque on the action screws and it got even better. I've shot a lot of really good groups with that rifle. It is the best shooting .22 I own and I have a bunch including some a lot more expensive than the Savage.

I shot this 4 shot group at 50 yards with the Savage. I ran out of ammo so I didn't get to shoot 5. Obviously I don't get a group like this every time but I've shot quite a few under 1/8th inch at 50 yards and I've shot under 1" at 100 yards. But this target is my best one. And yes that is the size of one bullet hole.

Very cool- those are some of the best .22s on the market today IMO. I have one of the standard wood versions with open-sights and it drives tacks.
