Default Kimber K6s and Ruger Blackhawk Bisley 44 Special

I’ve done some horse trading the past couple of months and ended up acquiring the Kimber K6s and a Ruger Blackhawk Bisley in .44 special.

I have taken the Kimber out four times for a total of 150 rounds or so. No mishaps or problems. The DA trigger is very, very nice but I have struggled to shoot it well...to put it mildly. My brain thinks the trigger should break earlier than it does and I tend to pull the barrel off target in anticipation I guess. The third range trip it got a whole lot better and yesterday (the fourth range trip) I shot it pretty well out to 12 yards. Yesterday was also the first range session with the new Altamont grips. The new grips are about a 1/4” or so longer than the factory rubbers allowing me to get my pinky finger on, which likely helped improve my accuracy. I have a narrow hand/fingers so it may not provide a full three finger grip for larger hands. A few more range trips and I expect the K6s will be ready for carry duty. I really like it, and as a bonus, it fits perfectly in my LCR holsters.

And just last week I picked up a lightly used Ruger Blackhawk Bisley in 44 special. My LGS had recently bought about 60 firearms from a widow of one of their longtime customers. This was one of them. I worked out a trade involving a Taurus 44 Mag I never warmed up to. I have wanted to enjoy a nice SA revolver and tried a few Ruger rimfire models but had nothing but problems so I sold or traded each one. Yesterday the Blackhawk accompanied the Kimber to the range. It didn’t come with a box but it showed almost no signs of use...other than the trigger had been worked by removing coils off the hammer spring. Fortunately it fired all 42 rounds I shot without problem. I ordered some Wolff springs and will experiment. The trigger pull is nice as it sits but the lock time seems to be in slow motion, which is not an aid to accuracy...and I need all the help I can get! The picture of the target is 12 rounds at 12 yards fired with an unsupported two handed grip. Obviously some flyers there but not too bad by my standards for a new gun. The all black sights challenged my eyes and will be remedied with some paint on the front sight. And, the Bisley grip is comfortable but I need more practice on how best to grip. I canot get as high a grip as I wanted because the webbing of my hand interferes with cocking the hammer (I like to use my weak hand to cock the hammer). I really like this revolver and the El Paso Saddlery holster I picked up from Midway. It allows me to get my cowboy on!

I have the Ruger like yours. Congrats on that one. I hope you handload as 44 Special is very nice and when loaded with your choice of bullet and powder it can come alive. Most of the factory loads are a bit anemic.

You are right about reloading. I need to look into it to truly tap into the 44 special.

If you have reloaded before or know anyone that does or has, Unique powder is great. It works in just about everything, especially for target velocity stuff. I shot off 50 rounds in my flat top a couple days ago and had lots of fun. The Special is great, no need to try and get more out of it, for that I have 44 Magnum revolvers. (I have a bunch of both actually)
Best wishes.

That Bisley would look good with ivory grips! Sort of like Elmer's #5.
