I have STRAYED! A Bulldog follow me home...
And, I am a diehard Labrador person! (Well, Doberman's, too)
I've been sort of loosely watching for one of these to give some relief to my lovely 696. Son spotted this, and excellent pointer that he is, appropriately drew my attention. The price was in "truck gun" range so I cratered.
According to the Charter Arms web site this is their "Tiger" Bulldog and is their most expensive finish for this model. Judging by the dings, either this kid was somebody's 'truck gun" or the the tiger striped finish isn't that durable.
Interestingly, this puppy fits perfectly in the David Keith holster that the above son had made for my 2" pre 10's as a birthday present. He referred to this application as "sacrilegious". Oh well. Great for walking in the woods with snake shot.

Very, very nice. The .44s can knock a man off his feet with ease, much better than the .38s the police carry. Good guns!

I had a similar brain snap a few years ago, ended up with this. My LGS took it in trade and the price was right. Taurus 450 full titanium in 45 Colt... Basically the same size as a K frame snub but it weighs less than a loaded double stack magazine...

I lucked into these 431s a few years back, as well as an old CA target bulldog.
I've been very happy with all three.

I carry a Charter arms 44 backpacker, 2.5" bbl "combat" wood grips, magna porta. loaded with 7.0g unique behind a 240g LSWC. I like it. Think you'll like the Tiger.

I know your affinity for big bore snubs, I share that. I own a original bulldog that I acquired in the 70’s when they were introduced. Over the years I have acquired two more. I walk five miles 5 evenings a week and a stainless bulldog accompanies me, it is lightweight, stainless and shoots big bullets.
I carry mine with the Federal lead SWC HP or my handloads of a 200 gr wadcutter powered by Unique. I carry mine in an old S&W IWB sheath holster. I have several Smith snubby 44’’s, but the CA is a good companion also.

I'm interested in a 45 acp Pitbull. How do you like the extractor mechanism?
(and if you have a moon-clip revolver, what is your opinion of how they compare?)

I have never had difficulty with Charter's cartridge retension system in the Pitbull. You do have to press just a little when loading, which is different.
I also have Taurus M380 and 905 revolvers which use the five round metal clips. There is no question that reloading five en-masse with the clip is faster than individual rounds. (Just as a Speedloader is generally faster than a Speed Strip.)
But both the Speedloader and Clip require a manner of carry. (And clips are prone to becoming bent.) I have just found that a Speed Strip or five loose rounds in a blue-jean watch pocket to work really well for me. I do have a single .38 Speedloader case that two loaded clips will fit into, if I remove the insert, so I could carry that on my belt were I to carry the 380 or 9mm for SD.

I have 6 moon chip 45acp revolvers including a 25-2 Jovino--all S&W... love em all. A moon lip loading tool makes a big difference unless you are using the plastic clips.

Me too. Been itching for a Bulldog for a couple years. My 642 is about as much felt recoil as I can handle. So I'm hesitating on the Bulldog. Anyone can give an opinion on the comparison of the two ?? Thanks

I have posted this before.
Some people disagree but here is my opinion on the Bulldog vs the KLCR and 442

200gr Speer Gold Dot 44 Special 8.6gr Power Pistol/Win primer/1.490″ - 10 feet from barrel
Elevation 1000 ft above sea level
105 Degrees
Avg – 1015 FPS – 457ft lbs energy
95 Degrees
Avg – 993.3 FPS – 438ft lbs energy
86 Degrees
Avg – 950.8 FPS – 402ft lbs energy
I added temps because I live in a warm climate so sometimes my velocities appear high and I want people to know why.... you can see how the temp has an affect on velocities.

Hello, it’s nice to see the bulldog being discussed, i love my BULLDOG! I got it about a year ago. @ 19oz its my favorite pocket carry. I think a boomer is in my future.

Randy, I think you will love your Bulldog. I bought one of the first ones back in the early 70s, and I had just started into reloading and casting and sizing bullets. Had a lot of fun creating what I thought was the ideal round for the snubby 44. Unfortunately, I later traded off that great little gun. Someday, it is inevitable that I will find one of those early models at the right price, and it will join my accumulation!!

The 642/442 is a 14.4 ounce alloy frame revolver.
A Charter .40 pitbull is 20 ounces, the frame is steel while the grip and trigger guard are alloy.
A M640 is 22 ounces all steel.
The recoil of my .44 Bulldog and .45 Pitbull never bothered me. The recoil of my M640 does not bother me. I shoot target wadcutters in my 442. It does not have the mass to absorb as much recoil as the heavier revolvers. Physics.
