Default New to me Beretta 96

I posted awhile back about the chance to buy a 96 for a good price. I have never really been a .40 cal shooter combined with the fact I loved shooting the 92 9mm that I have borrowed in the past. When the 96 deal came up, I had reservations but after several hundred rounds through it, I knew I wanted this gun.

And then, I got to shoot the 96, and a 92 back to back. Much to my surprise, I shot the 96 just a bit better! Go figure. Yes the 92 had less felt recoil, and I was expecting to do follow up shots better with the 92 but after some rounds downrange, they were so close with the 96 being just a bit better, so I bought it! Couple more days to get it out and back in my hands.

So, if any 96 fans here, fill me in on some info, tips, or accessories you think might be helpful...thanks

Congrats on a good gun! I have a 92 and a 96 and I prefer shooting the 96. In that big gun the .40 is a joy.

All I’ve done to mine is swap the mainspring for one from the D model. Its an easy job to do, and it improves the trigger pull considerably.

Congrats! I really liked carrying a 96 on duty before I switched to the shorter 229.

Big Beretta fan right here. I 2nd the Beretta "D" hammer spring. It's a factory beretta replacement part for the double action only 96D model. Very popular upgrade for 92 & 96 series SA/DA pistols. You can find it and other beretta replacement parts on Brownells. Real easy to replace.

I don't think this make is available any longer but I have a Ceiner 22 conversion unit for mine. This type of unit still allows for some economical practice. Pehaps another company is now making a unit.

Has anyone had any experience with the Beretta 98 in 9X21mm?

I've been told that it's a straight swap to put in a 92 9mm barrel and then basically have two guns. I already have a 9mm gun but I kinda like having that option. Looks like a 92 barrel is about 80 bucks.
Anyone here tried it before?

Yes, you can drop a 9mm 92fs barrel in a mod 96 and use the stock 96 slide and 40 cal magazines however you might get reduced reliability with case extraction. The extractor might not extract every spent case because the breech face is slightly larger and the cartridges may not seat properly all the time. But it is perfectly safe.

For better reliability use a beretta 9mm barrel, slide and magazine.
