Mini 14 ordered
Yep, I did it. Ordered a new Mini.
I got a good price from Grab a Gun, 738.61 plus 7.99 shipping. I ordered it Friday and it shipped today. Model 5816. Ranch in blue with 2 20 round mags. ,rail and scope rings.
I've watched the price go up and down almost daily. The current price is 746.58 and out of stock.
I thought about buying an older one and chasing the accuracy demon but decided that the new one would serve me better and if any improvements are needed I have a better start with the newer model. I don't expect it to be a tack driver.
Ammo suggestions? The opinion that I've been reading is a .62 grain works best. Who sells 1000 or so at the best price?

You should check out SGammo.com
Nice score, I am pretty fond of my Mini 14. stay away from the 62 grain green tip. I would recommend the Wolf Gold at 272.50 a thousand, excellent ammo under three hundred bucks for a thousand delivered.

I just traded a full size Springfield Range Officer for a Mini 14 Tactical (model 5847) myself a couple weeks ago. Got 14 Ruger mags (a mix of 5, 10, and mostly 20rd) with it and a Nikon Prostaff 2-7x32 scope (already sighted in). Sweet rifle. I'll echo staying away from green tip. Mine is more accurate with 55gr ammo, even steel cased. Haven't had a FTF or FTE yet with anything I've fed it.
Target Sports has 1000 rds of PRVI Partisan M193 for 299.50 shipped
Prvi Partizan 5.56mm M193 Ammo 55 Grain FMJ Bulk 1000 Rds

The barrel twist on the current Mini 14s is 1-9. That is ideal for a bullet the length of the 62 gr SS109 (0.911") and M855 (0.907") projectiles.
1-9 twist will shoot any lead core bullet up to 68 grains well and it will also shoot 55 gr boat tailed FMJ and spire point bullets well. In particular the .735" long Hornady 55 gr FMJ shoots very well in 1-9 twist barrels as it is longer than the average 55 gr bullet and is well made and more concentric than many FMJs.
The factory accuracy standard for the 58X series Mini-14s is 2 MOA, and many will do a bit better than that without any additional work.

had a mini @ 75 yds off the bench it would cloverleaf 3 rds. @ 100 yd. 3" groups, not even breath control, @ 200 yds. it shot 4" groups off the bench. i know the mini not known for it's shot groupings over 150 yds. no barrel stablizer. but it was only using Ferderal 55 gr. ball boattails w/ the accuracy reselts. still have the 200 yd. target. added a ATI folding stock, didn't care for it, made it feel like it didn't belong on the rifle. the rifle didn't like the nylon tipped ammo. enjoy your mini. suggestion, purchase the cotton Q tips on the wooden sticks. Tetra Lub on moveing parts, use spareingly, espically on the bolt, it will heat up and the blowback splash will burn your face. Tetra Lub the bore, it makes cleaning the bore easier to clean. keep gas port hole in the bolt clean, pipe cleaners for the gas port, lub the bolt slide rail. can't think of the http: where the mini 14 is well discussed, i'll look it up if you want, IM me, i'll look up the forum. have a good week.
